William Morrison makes four

Coast News:
William Morrison, the vice president of the Leucadia 101 Main Street Association and Bryan Ziegler, a deputy county counsel who ran for a city council seat in 2012, pulled nomination papers this week, according to the City Clerk’s office.

[...]

Morrison, according to biographical information on the Main Street website, is a licensed architect who currently serves as the group’s economic development chair.
Morrison is a longtime leader of Leucadia 101, which has been consistently pro-Streetscape, so if you're among the anti-roundabout gang, he's not for you.  Here is an anonymous and pointedly opposing view of his May 28, 2014 L101 presentation before council.  You may wish to view the video of that meeting on the city's web site to get an unfiltered measure of Mr. Morrison (nevertheless, I do think this new citizen reporting of council meetings on EU is quite helpful in pointing us to that presentation!).

On Prop A, we don't know his position, but we do have this in a letter from Fred Caldwell to the Coast News:
EncinitasHOPE.com with disregard for the truth and without permission used our L-101 logo to push their agenda against Prop A on their recently printed literature sent to many residents. Likewise, encinitasHOPE.com uses “Leucadia Main Street Association” deceitfully on their website to garner votes against Prop A. They have since been asked to cease to do so by our president, William Morrison and irrespectively have not ceased as of the date of this email to The Coast News.
Welcome to the mix, Mr. Morrison. We look forward to learning more about your positions.

UPDATE: Former mayor, regular city warchdog and critic of Gus Vina, and Prop A campaigner Sheila Cameron runs for mayor! And Morrison hadn't turned in his papers yet the last time the U-T checked late in the afternoon.

  1. What does it matter. As many people here confidently predicted, Barth will run because she is just so devious. Although I must admit, Barth is pushing it pretty close to the wire. I mean, all these people here couldn't be wrong, could they? There is only a few hours left to pull papers.

  2. Barth could not win- she knows it. The Lew Edwards tax scheme was the nail in her coffin. As soon as the public outed her for wanting to raise taxes, and for letting Gus Vina with hold financial information from the public her chances or winning an election went to zero

She could be holding out hope that if Kranz is elected then her cronies Kranz, Blakespear and Shaffer will appoint Barth to the open seat- then they will have the 4-1 super majority to put their tax increase on the ballot and to loot taxpayer money to pay consultants to hoodwink the public

Morrisson would make a good and fair council member. He has shown professional leadership over many years with L101, knows the issues of the city, not beholding to anyone, is well respected in his field and community and has shown his professionalism in addressing city issues.
He and Blakesphere have my votes.

    2. why Blakespear? She has said nothing on important issues.

The only issue she has spoken on was Pacific View. She supported buying it at any cost- and paying $10M for a property we can't use without dumping money into it that we don't have.

Poor decision making on her part- and look for Scott Chatfield to do a photo shoot of her in 2 weeks- watch for it

so why Blakespear over Graboi? Atleast Graboi stood up to Vina and Sabine on Desert Rose. Blakespear offers no leadership and mroe droning on and on

  4. Thank you Sheila for jumping in and providing a Prop A mayor candidate. Sheila and Julie are our hopes to clean out the old boys network that has held sway for far too long. Now just wait for all the city trolls to go bananas. The threat of real change and not just more seat fillers will impel them to run around like their heads are cut off. Gentleman and ladies, start your engines.

  5. Yes, Sheila would be a good mayor!

Morrison is too intertwined with Leucadia 101 Mainstreet Association to have objectivity, as a candidate for Council. He can't see the loss of canopy for the five one-lane roundabout circling in his head, obstructing his vision. Would he favor a public vote on that $19 Million plus project? Most locals support the treescape, the artwalk, our local businesses, but not the planned cementscape.

Not sure what email 6:03 is referring to, and I'd like to see it as well. The only like email I read was one from the city secretary suggesting one business group should come to a unanimous decision on Prop A. It didn't say pro or con but you can read between the lines. Especially after the director from DEMA announced their board was unanimously against Prop A - then they had to retract that statement the next week because it wasn't so. If I can locate the referrenced email, I'll post it. I'll ask Bruce Ehlers if he has it.

  9. Sheila-Seriously? Is this really true. Anyone who has spent any time following city politics knows that Sheila would not be a good Mayor. Just google her and you can find it out for yourselves. She once hit a staffer. She was kicked off the council by her colleagues for lots of reasons. She is a mental case. And no, I don't hate Sheila. I just think she would be the worst Mayor of the ones running.

7:42 You sound like a density bonus developer.

      Delete
    9. We all know homes are built by a developer. But the conditions of 20-30-40 years ago are not those of the day. We reached a tipping point 10-15 years ago, where the rising prices and diminishing space came together and you now have non-standard housing developments being rammed into areas where one home stood (behind La Especial Norte) or in an existing neighborhood where new homes loom down on existing homes. (Hermes).

It's a question of values, old developers lived where they built, and there wasn't bonus density in there to max out lot lines.

It's a bigger issue in our society, with a disconnect between making money and living with your friends and neighbors.
I mean, you know there's an issue when people like the folks on the corner of Jason and Vulcan can get up and do a dog and pony show for density bonus and try and act like it's not a bad thing to their neighbors.

    13. Wow! I've always considered Encinitas to be an 'enlightened' city in comparison to others in the county, but I guess exasperation has overtaken those who are educated, forcing them from the stage and leaving the peanut gallery to dredge up old tired tropes.

If this is how the campaign is going to start, I predict WC pulls the plug the first week after Labor Day.

There is always an underlying unspoken reserve of antagonism toward any business people making a living on this blog, and anyone who has chosen a vocation in serving the public: so, if you cannot support business/free enterprise, and you resent public servants, because they make more money than you, then you are left no where to go as a subject of an abundant society. The posters on this blog keep generating and digesting the same tired stories over-and-over, whether there is truly a nexus to reality or not.

The election for the Mayor's seat will be lost in a series of caustic accusations and fantastic revelations, but to what end? What is the goal of the city? To provide means and safety. Gaspar versus Cameron, is almost like, and I am dating myself, almost like Superman versus Bizarro Superman: with Kranz inbetween sort of like a sixth finger, or third nipple: when Kranz states that he is running to continue Barth's legacy, one wonders when Kranz hired Larry David to write his campaign material. Cameron must be convinced that after 2 decades out of office any of the reasons for her dismissal by her peers will have either been forgotten, or that the urgency of today's problems will allow her, warts and all, to be recognized and desired/promoted for her knowledge, like Nixon in 1968. The true difficulty for a busy voter will be to determine what are the true or real issues facing the city? Sheila's Last Hurrah? God Bless her and God's speed.

As far as the September 16th Open Forum, can we make a pledge to keep it alcohol free? That includes Cardiffians attending not under the influence: many candidates have been abused by sorry-ass drunks at this forum th last couple of years: Cardiff deserves better.

Sheila doesn't have a chance, I think her run is a mix of frustration, vanity and an open window in her life to run. It IS a weak field in terms of accomplishment, but that's where we are at this point.

It does make for a much more interesting race, as Sheila knows where some of the bodies are buried politically, and she knows the working down at city hall. It might force some real issues to be addressed, but it also may create a three ring circus.

Or if Tony et al sell out to an entity, like EUSD, vastly overpaying for PV, refusing to acknowledge new information and try and save taxpayer's some money, or waving all fees for the district on developing 10 acres on Quail Garden's Drive: why is that behavior 'better' behavior than the addition of an affordable unit in Olivenhain?

Just trying to understand the logic; if there is any?

If you want to talk vastly overpaying for something with no returns, check out the needless 4 railroad underpasses planned burn up $25 million (when at-grade crossings cost a fraction of that). Working to prevent that purchase (by at least signing LTC's petition) is a smart financial move. But paying a third for property in Encinitas next to the ocean with the intention to educate, create jobs and revenue is hardly a bad choice. Especially when it prevents sprawl at the same time.

I remember when Kranz made the remark at the City Council meeting where all the Gaspar supporters came out, as Shaffer, et al, decided they wanted to revisit the original deal of splitting the Mayorship this year. Tony said about Kristin, while he was in sitting on the dias, that he knew she was a Rotarian and they usually put service before self. He stated that Kristin was putting self above service.
