Will Encinitas use the same personnel and process that Brentwood used to find an interim and then a permanent city manager?
In 2010, Brentwood's population was 51,481. Vina is starting there at a salary that's considerably more than Encinitas is paying him after three years here.
One good turn deserves another. Maybe a civic-minded individual wants to contact some Brentwood council members and let them know what they're getting into. Vina could not have pulled this off without a good recommendation from our council and/or present or former mayor.
Look at the geographic proximity of Brentwood to both Sacramento and Stockton. It would be impossible for Brentwood to not know about Vinas 'tenure' in those cities. Perhaps Brentwood is selecting Vina for this very reason (sound familiar?). Now Vina vacating a SoCal city after a mere 3 years? Politics as usual. They HAVE to know.
Well, 9:48, your point supports the view there's nothing to know. Despite consistent claims on this blog that Vina sank Stockton and Sacramento, there's no evidence in the media there that he did.
Yes, he screwed us and benefited himself in Encinitas. There's plenty of evidence of that, but nobody has produced proof that he messed up Stockton and Sac. The latest blame is because he didn't save those cities, their troubles are his doing.
Before anybody cites the Sac council's vote, it was 5-4 = politics not bad performance. If one vote had gone the other way, we wouldn't know Gus.
If Gus really did sink Stockton and Sac, Brentwood would know. For accusations to be legitimate, accusers must show proof. Because Gus was guilty here, doesn't necessarily mean he was guilty up north.
How do you know Vina didn't "forewarn them of long term financial impacts for their proposed plans"? After all, the council makes the final decision. They can choose to ignore staff advice.
3 years closer to golden huge 100% of highest paid year retirement.
Encinitas - Total lose….. no financial plan…. more huge debt voted in by our idiotic City Council… and huge long term maintenance and operation costs for our Regional Sports Complex, Regional Art Center, and Life Guard Tower.
Next election will be interesting. Vote out all incumbents. The best thing they did was get rid of Vina. Whoever was responsible for his bad review, wins favors in my book.
Was it a bad review or did he see the writing on the wall? It's like the old TV series "Tightrope" - he gets out of the loop just before the bottom drops out.
It was the 28 obstructionists who sounded the alarm starting years ago. They deserve the credit since they have continued to focus on his poor performance.
The next CM will be as bad or worse than Gussy boy. And cost us more money. Why?? Because our council thinks money grows on trees and shit don't stink. Fools!! Vote them out and and if they don't leave run them out.
10:44- your new CM will cost more than Gus, have greater bennies than Gus, get more paid leave than Gus, drive a nicer car than Gus ( at city expense ) AND be as bad or worse than Gus in all ways. That's what my crystal ball tells me. And yours ??
7:26 Crystal balls were the rage in the 60's. You are way out of date, but keep trying. I have always found that common sense works best to answer your question.
I believe the 14 (or less) posters above are not seeing the forest for the trees. The one thing y'all are missing is that Vina was good soldier for the council. He did exactly what they wanted him to do. Yes there were some foot faults, yes there were some blunders, and yes there were some pretty questionable lapses, but they were all on the councils watch. Vina's detractors at times laid blame on the council (rightly so), saying that the council was unable to rein him in - well what's to say the Brentwood council can't, or won't? Perhaps Vina would be an excellent CM with a strong council guiding him. Oh well, go on and beat this dead horse. I'm sure the corpse will last long enough until Vina's replacement is found.
Maybe sculpin should move to Brentwood since he seems to like Vina. As usual, your comments make no sense. Stop smoking the bad stuff. Any one that counts the posts surely would try to count the trees in the forest. How many trees are in Sequoia?
Overheard at the Pacific View School press conference announcing the city was buying the school. Older lady: "Thank you so much Mr. Vina for making this happen". Vina: "I only service at the pleasure of the council".
1:43 When I say "council", I am including all five of them. Where I live the sun always rises in the east. You may be surprised to know it sets in the west. I am glad that I was part of your education today.
Maybe you are late to this blog but Shaffer and Kranz had heavy support here when they ran and now a lot of the commenters here are saying they're tools of the city manager. Why should anybody listen to those opinions now. So get out this evening and make sure the sun does set in the west. Maybe you'll see the space station.
"I am glad that I was part of your education today"
I can't honestly say I've learned anything reading this blog other than hate, ignorance and childish rants. Wait a minute, maybe I did learn how many people are clueless. And yes, I do ask myself why I come here. Let the vitriol resume.
Absolutely vote out all incumbents next election. I hope the good candidates out there will consider running. We need to get rid of the "morons" that have been serving us for way too long.
Three council seats and the mayor's seat are up for grabs in 2016, so it's not possible to vote all five out. The other council seat is secure until 2018.
Vina and Barth have a lot in common in terms of their sneakiness and their roles as victims. They both claim that they did not have the support of others for political reasons. They both lost the support of some of their most enthusiastic supporters after being caught in repeated lies. However, they both wear cool glasses.
Catherine has the chance to not fall in line as past members have and I hope she maintains a semblance of independence against the forces that have been in place for decades. Perhaps even a couple of the others can join her and stand for the residents which has been lacking for years. We have a new year upon us and a new council make up that can make a huge difference, if they choose to do so.
The doubters out there who claim there will be those who will attack them no matter what they do are wrong. If we had had council members who didn't turn their backs on their campaign promises they wouldn't have engendered the criticism they ended up earning. That is all we ask of our elected reps. Stand for the residents. Do not be blinded by those on the inside who are protecting their rear ends and listen up. We are a forgiving lot when we see someone step out of their comfort zone.
They have the next two years to prove their worth. Will they? I for one, hope so.
I hope some of these enablers in Planning and Park and Rec would receive similar job offers elsewhere and join vina for greener pastures. Sadly, what we have learned is even if we manage to dump lousy council members like we did in 2012, if the depts they stacked from top to bottom remain, the results will not change. Clean house for true change. You have the next two years to show us you are of true heart in your desire to stand for this community.
The system is entrenched. If three determined reformers on our council moved together to effect major change on behalf of residents, they would be squashed by a conspiracy among staff, business interests and other politicians at every level.
The embedded self-interest is too big to overcome. All citizens can hope for from elected officials is small, occasional concessions.
Ballot initiatives and lawsuits are the only ways to make a big dent. Even mass protests have only small effects.
Hey folks. All this is nothing new. Like over 20 years of nothing new. There are people here who just don't think the city does anything right. See this LA Times article from September 28, 1992. Sound familiar?
"Warren Shafer says he's no Wizard of Oz.
"The Encinitas city manager bristles at the suggestion that he's the little man with the larger-than-life voice, hidden behind the curtain and working the whistles, bells and pulleys for the supposedly all-powerful City Council.
"Instead, he sees himself as a dutiful bureaucrat who's grown tired of all the back-stabbers and armchair quarterbacks who question his every move, saying he's the real political powerhouse around town, a conniving insider with the city's decision-makers in his back pocket.
"It's King Warren, they say, and his loyal cast of City Council followers.

The guy's a professional!
ReplyDeleteHis sunglasses won Barth over.
DeleteBrentwood probably digs his accent. Haaaa.
So long sucker. I am so glad Encinitas only took 3 years of punishment under this clueless clown.
Will Encinitas use the same personnel and process that Brentwood used to find an interim and then a permanent city manager?

Maybe the blindness that afflicted our council has become an epidemic!
DeleteWell played, Mr. Vina, well played...
ReplyDeletePeckam and McKenny is the same company that took about $40,000.00 to bring Vina and is incompetence and deceptive ways to Encinitas
ReplyDeleteNow Peckham is brining Vina to Brentwood and getting paid again
This is called putting them in the front door and taking them out the back
Encinitas should demand there money be returned- the council should never use this firm ever again for any position
Look at the geographic proximity of Brentwood to both Sacramento and Stockton. It would be impossible for Brentwood to not know about Vinas 'tenure' in those cities. Director of Finance for Both Cities means he has a fiduciary responsibility to forewarn them of long term financial impacts for their proposed plans.
DeleteAs we know, Vina has never been good at looking at long term finances beyond his own pension spiking!
Its sooooo good that we are rid of Vina and Barth. Next election other proven failure incumbents to go. Next.
5:36 AM
DeleteHow do you know Vina didn't "forewarn them of long term financial impacts for their proposed plans"? After all, the council makes the final decision. They can choose to ignore staff advice.
We have an idiotic bunch of council members that will probably use the same company. Any one want to place bets?
ReplyDeleteToo bad he didn't use his skills to benefit our city and citizens rather than only himself.
ReplyDeleteExactly…. Vina Wins!
ReplyDelete3 years closer to golden huge 100% of highest paid year retirement.

DeleteMaybe it is time to de-incorporate.
7:27 surely must have a crystal ball that sees into the future. Please tell us more oh great psychic.
Delete10:44- your new CM will cost more than Gus, have greater bennies than Gus, get more paid leave than Gus, drive a nicer car than Gus ( at city expense ) AND be as bad or worse than Gus in all ways.
DeleteThat's what my crystal ball tells me. And yours ??
8:29 AM
DeleteYes, let's "de-incorporate" and give the County control again. I'm sure they have use for our taxes in other parts of the county.
7:26 Crystal balls were the rage in the 60's. You are way out of date, but keep trying. I have always found that common sense works best to answer your question.
Delete10:16- I guess we 'll know in a few months. Meanwhile enjoy fantasy land, what's Disney charge you to live there everyday ??
DeleteVina going to Brentwood tells me their city council is no smarter than ours was/in. Good riddance to bad rubbish.
ReplyDeleteI believe the 14 (or less) posters above are not seeing the forest for the trees. The one thing y'all are missing is that Vina was good soldier for the council. - The Sculpin
Please, oh please, don't let the replacement be Jeff Murphy. He would be terrible, and already is telling lies of omission.
DeleteMaybe sculpin should move to Brentwood since he seems to like Vina. As usual, your comments make no sense. Stop smoking the bad stuff. Any one that counts the posts surely would try to count the trees in the forest. How many trees are in Sequoia?
ReplyDeleteSculpin should take the vow of silence.
DeleteOverheard at the Pacific View School press conference announcing the city was buying the school. Older lady: "Thank you so much Mr. Vina for making this happen". Vina: "I only service at the pleasure of the council".
ReplyDeleteVinas wife must get up every morning laughing at the rubes that hire her husband.
ReplyDelete--- all the way to the bank darlin!!
ReplyDeleteMs V
So now you're taking shots at Mrs. Vina. Nothing but class.
DeleteVina has given this city nothing but financial headaches to solve and has added another $3,000,000 per year DEBT service for the next 20 years.
ReplyDeleteBrentwood gets what it deserves for not doing their homework. Just like Encinitas loser City Coucnil that brought us Vina.
"Vina has given this city nothing but financial headaches to solve and has added another $3,000,000 per year DEBT service for the next 20 years."
DeleteGee, I thought the city council had something to do with it. I guess I missed the meeting where Vina decided to act on his own.
10:07 It was always Vina directing the Council and giving them advice. They were stupid enough to listen to him.
Delete10:18 AM
Delete"It was always Vina directing the Council and giving them advice. They were stupid enough to listen to him."
So you're saying that at least two of the council members that many of the commenters here voted for are sheepish morons.
Does the sun still rise in the east in the world you live in?
1:43 When I say "council", I am including all five of them. Where I live the sun always rises in the east. You may be surprised to know it sets in the west. I am glad that I was part of your education today.

I agree with 10:29. Quit acting like a tool.

ReplyDeleteTony Kranz is a four-flusher.
ReplyDeleteWhat is a four flusher? You mean gone in one term?
ReplyDeleteI agree with that!
