Local Summer

In the 1890's, early German settlers in Olivenhain coined the term "Lokalen Sommer," referring to that time from early September to early October when the Zonies headed back home and the grommets were back in school, but the weather remained spectacular and the beaches were all for locals.

In the tradition of those early settlers, Encinitans from every corner (especially Merle), rejoice in Local Summer to this day.

  1. The phrase is "San Diego Summer", copyrighted by me. Best time of the year, starting the day after Labor Day.

  2. That was before alcohol, houses, and Jerome Stocks were invented.

EU, get back on script. This place has gone to sh1t, and is accelerating toward deeper levels of sh1t. Nothing but despair, evil plots, bankruptcy, and a painful slow death.

    Have a nice day.

  3. If a drink is poured in the forrest and Jerome's not there, does James Bond hear it?

  4. Yup…after Labor Day, though, we still get the hordes from LA, Riverside and Orange Counties….just try and find a free parking space on the weekends anytime but Winter! Reminds me of an old song, “Lets Take a Taxi to my (beach) Tent”, as this is the only way you can stay at the beach free all day three seasons out of the year if you live in a bus-poor area, and don’t have the dough for Year-round passes at the Calif. Parks. (And there’s just something in me that balks at having to pay for parking at “my” beach)…guess that comes from formerly living w/in ½ mile of the water…rents went up, I moved inland…decades ago.

(The Zoo used to be free to residents, too, believe it or not.)

Been here since 1956…crowded now, just to many darned bodies….but I’m an Old Timer. It was time for me to move on up north years ago…but, as Ambrose Bierce defines “Resident: n, unable to move away”.

Still, as I say to anyone who runs around screaming, “PARADISE”:

“Well, it ain’t a back alley in Detroit in January, but it isn’t a certain island in the Pacific I know of, either…it’s in between, all’s relative.”

Yeah. The main difference between here and paradise is more palm trees.

    2. Ummm...noooo.....I can tell you've never been out in the Big Blue much...there are some mighty pretty rocks out there, and the people don't rate you on what you have, or have done, but what kind of a human being you are.

      Totally different world and culture.

And no, I'm not giving out the Latitude and Longitude.

  5. There is a certain attorney in town who claims that opposition to "smart growth" is about racism. It seems that gentrification of particular communities has actually driven out much of the diversity that was present in times past.

However, this issue is more about how MANY MORE people we can pack into Encinitas not WHO the new residents are going to be.

Bottom line--when there are too many people--the quality of life that we have enjoyed here in Encinitas is threatened. I'd like to know who wants more traffic, more noise and more stress that more people will bring.

    1. Does that certain attorney happen to represent developers?

    2. 11:53, the problem is the BIA will always deny any area is full grown.

  8. By Tuesday, I should be able to get my preferred outdoor seating back at Coffee-Coffee. BTW, they have a new mural on the outside wall. Check it out.
