Power failure across wide swath of Encinitas

Locals from the coast 101 area to Village Park are reporting a complete power failure that began around 1:45 pm today.

By about 2:07 pm, power was coming back on in some areas.

SDG&E's Twitter feed reports that the company was ordered to cut power by the state.

  1. If SDG&E did that on purpose, we should be notified regularly WHEN they're going to save money.

  2. I want to be reimbursed for the almost 4-5 hour power outage about a week or so ago. It began in the village park area and affected about 2,000 customers. Where's our money?

  3. Good question 10:35. I'd like a rebate as well. Do they have any idea of how much food can go bad in 4 to 5 hours? Do they care? Even in the outage today, I, and I am sure others, lost a lot of perishable food that we now have to buy again. Most people don't have an extra generator just sitting around.

    1. If you didn't open the fridge much, your food is fine.

In remote places off the grid, they only run generators a few hours per day, and it's enough to keep fridges cold.

Was your meter spinning during the blackout? If not, then there is no need for a rebate.

    2. 8:06- I have medications that have to stay refrigerated and I have to take them 3 times a day. I guess it's all my fault that I don't keep a generator. And how in the hell would I know to look if my meter was spinning. You sound like an apologist for SDG and E.

    3. You could have filled your ice chest with the ice in your freezer, and topped it off with ice purchased from your local 7-11. Really....what would Davey Crockett have done?......whatever happened to personal responsibility?

    4. Sculpin- I am disabled and cannot easily get anywhere unless I have a driver. So as much as your suggestion is a good idea, perhaps you might want to think about other people's possible circumstances before you judge. Davey Crockett would be dead long ago if he had what I have. So, shut the eff up and go ride your horse. Wish I could do that.

    5. 10:01,

"how in the hell would I know to look if my meter was spinning"

Your power was out, right? There's your answer.

    6. So I get that your pissed about this, 1:34 - but come on - venting with no context and then we're supposed to divine your circumstances through a series of anonymous postings?!?! Sorry to offend, but maybe next time give us a clue.........

    7. I think the Sculpin owes someone an apology. You really should think about what you say before you post. We are allowed to be anonymous....stop using that as a continual cop out.

I dare you to type your own name. C'mon big boy!

    8. Sculpin, without power how is 7-11 to sell you anything?? You're and idiot.

    9. Darn! You're right! I'm and idiot.........

Look, not every 7-11 was out of power.......

Again - what has happened to personal responsibility? Resourcefulness? Ability to plan for unforeseen outcomes? Plan B? To use the current example, if keeping medications cold is so important, why not have a stand alone freezer half filled with ice to ensure they stay cold? Hasn't anyone around here gone camping? Backpacking? Have ya all turned into a bunch of softies that can't think their way out of a paper bag? A lot of posters here have very definite ideas on a lot of things.....but a little power out happens and OMG............"I'm a victim...I want to be compensated!!!!!!!"

      Sheesh.................

    10. Right, ride your bike or walk on our Complete Streets to a far-away 7-11 where the power is still working. Make a good guess as to where that might be.

Don't drive your car cause the traffic signals and crossing gates, lights and bells might not be working. Don't call on your land line cause that's not working either.

Haul a bag of ice or two back to your place before it melts and load it into an Igloo cooler with your meds and beer. Sit and relax with a brew while you wait for the power to come back on.

    11. As long as the brew is a Sculpin!!!

  4. Call them and demand a credit for services not delivered (not food reimbursements). It works all the time with Cox:other providers even for short/term outages.

  5. Our infrastructure is taxed. We lack water, road capacity, and now our electrical grid is unreliable.

WHY do we need more new houses when we can't even serve those already living here?

  6. Because 80-something percent of the city's general fund revenue comes from sales and property taxes. More people = more sales = more sales tax revenue. More high value development = more property tax revenue.

With continually growing revenue, the city can maintain its foolish overspending habits and continue to pay outlandish salaries, benefits and pensions.

  7. Get used to power cuts, this is how the control of the people starts....
