Stocks, Gaspar, Muir launch North County Republican PAC

There's a new PAC in town. North County Leadership Council:
Despite the fact that North County holds a large proportion of the county’s population (approximately 57%), serves as an important economic hub, and holds practically unlimited potential, the region lacks an established political network dedicated toward promoting and electing the next generation of pro-prosperity candidates.

Consequently, a coalition of North County elected officials and community leaders has established the North County Leadership Council, an organization dedicated to supporting and electing strong leaders for the future while advocating for issues that matter to the region as a whole.

We believe an alliance among elected officials from all North County cities and jurisdictions north of State Route 56 can create stronger political leadership and new opportunities for the region.

Primary among the organizations activities will be the establishment and growth of a Political Action Committee geared toward supporting local and regional candidates who have received the endorsement of the organization.

In addition, the NCLC will also seek to organize regional leaders to address, advocate for, or oppose issues that have an impact on the entire region.
Former Mayor Jerome Stocks is the Chairman of NCLC, and current Mayor Kristin Gaspar and Councilman Mark Muir are on the board of directors, along with other north county Republican mayors and council members.

Filings show that the PAC was established in May, with its initial funding coming in June from Gaspar, Muir, and Stocks Insurance in addition to Oceanside Councilman Jerry Kern and two others.

Anyone interested in supporting stronger political leadership and new opportunities for the region can contribute here.

  3. If anyone thought that a few 'reasonable' rulings recently by GASpar and Muir signaled a change of heart, well, that goes out the door today, and clearly shows that they are and have always been puppets for 'his lowness'.

To think that I agreed with them a couple of times lately and, at the time, was thinking, how can it be that I supported their rulings? I assumed they were starting their campaigns a year and a half early. Now that is only too evident.

The gaul is astounding. Lets all hope they spend and waste a lot of repugnican money and are shown the door as a sign they are over and done around here.

Time to team up and present a united front of four candidates on the same page next year to oust these bought off council members once and for all.

  4. $tock$ probably thinks Gaspar will give him county appointments if she succeeds. She is mimicking her mayoral line of phony promises of "roads, infrastructure and core services" as her Supervisorial platform. The Steppford wife has a prerecorded sound track in that hollow noggin, and carpetbagger $tock$ is working the mic. All three need to disappear for the good of the community.

    2. I agree, it's cold and sterile. It would actually look great if they clad the white sides in warm hardwood slats.

If we're being honest though, the furniture store in a thinly-veiled gas station conversion wasn't winning any prizes for community character either.

      Delete
    3. Was a Shell gas station, then was the Community Market for several years. Next, I think, it became the furniture store. All were kinda native and fit in.

It sure would be nice if the replacement building had some shape, texture and looked as if it belonged in a beach town. As it's designed, it's totally out of character for Encinitas.

Even the whole Lumberyard shopping center has warmth and looks as if it belongs.

Pacific Station, on the other hand, is incredibly ugly. The new one planned for H and 101 is comparable.

    2. Seems like they want the party backing so badly, and the money which comes with it, that they are willing to risk another affiliation with Stocks. Bad strategy, I'd say.

Some are saying Catherine Blakespear should run for mayor, which would help Tony Kranz to get re-elected, as the plurality would be split yet another way.

This is because CB's seat would also become open, were she elected, as she well could be. TK would be foolish to risk running for mayor again, because it would take many more votes to be elected for an office with only one seat open.

      Delete
    3. TK can't win, so that point is moot. Gaspar's affiliation with Stocks is the least of her problems: it's the big money, predatory developer stink that will never wash off.

      Delete
    4. TK will win. BIA cronies will push the PV purchase hard but they will fail. Give it your best shot.

      Delete
    5. If LS's Council seat, TK's seat, MM's Seat and CB's seat all end up being open, which would happen if CB takes the mayorship, then the top votes will be split four ways.

With a four way plurality split TK would more likely be elected, needing only 16% of the votes, or less. Stocks and Bond both benefitted by squeaking through with a plurality, not a majority, in 2008, their final terms in office.

      Delete
    6. Had not Muir run, $tock$ would have been reelected. Muir was "insurance" for the developer interests, since $tock$ was under fire. One or the other - it made no difference, as they bark to the same Master.

If Stocks had not appointed Muir to fill Houlihan's seat, he probably would have won re-election just due to the weak field.

Weak field and lots of open seats in 2016 probably means any incumbent who wants to run can win re-election easily.

  22. Much has been made recently of the lack of mid-range hotels in Encinitas. Many of us work for companies that spend serious money on training, meetings, and partner conferences in the area. Encinitas just doesn't have any good options. Keep in mind that many of these events are regional, and you get a better deal of you schedule multiple regional events with one major chain. Marriott, Hilton, and Starwood (Westin) are the majors.

I don't golf, but I just walked around Encinitas Ranch clubhouse and two things hit me:

First, the place is dead on a holiday weekend. Nobody is golfing. That place is going to cost us money for years, because they will not be meeting revenue targets anytime soon.

Second, if you reconfigured the clubhouse, parking lot, cart barn, putting green, and driving range, there is plenty of room for an oven view hotel, on a golf course, with meeting space and a decent restaurant.

It wouldn't block anyone's views. It might stop the bleeding of public money to subsidize the existing golf course, and I think the location would not affect many people.

Seriously, that's the spot that makes sense.

    1. 4:55 I like your thinking alot. Is there enough space for retail as well? I'd love to see a good movie theatre in town. It's BS that a city our size and we need to drive to La Jolla, UTC or San Marcos. I'd also love to see grown up place for nightlife like L'Auberge in town.

    2. Is this idea the same as the convention center on Saxony the Leichtag group wants? If so, no thanks. A major convention center does not belong in a bedroom community.

I find it more believable that you're working to promote a supposed "lack" of major hotels to drive support for the Leuchtag project than representing a company that simply doesn't want to avail itself of the many existing options in San Diego.

      Delete
    3. 4:55 PM
The Ecke development was set up to bleed the golf course of money.
Except for the summer months, it is a cold breezy place in the late afternoon and evening. The golf course was designed for carts not for walking. There are too many bushy and hilly areas that claim lost balls.
In a few more years the golf course becomes city property. Watch the Council dance for dollars to build there.

      Delete
    4. This is 4:55.

What Liechtag convention center? Are you talking about the meeting space the Botanical Garden is considering?

Either way, meeting space alone doesn't solve the problem. The money goes to a place where people can sleep, eat, and meet. Bonus if you have some activity on site like golf. Often companies will invite regional customers or business partners for a couple of days around a new product announcement, or training, with a half day activity thrown in for execs to develop relationships. Companies want to do everything at one site if possible to make sure they have a captive audience.

We're not talking about a convention center. Even something as small as L'Auberge works.

7:20 makes a good point. I don't think the golf course was designed to fail, but it is failing by not meeting volume or revenue projections. Who pays for the shortfall? We all do. Without a plan to improve the financials, the golf course could shut down in the future and get developed. Don't think it can happen? It's happening right now in Escondido.

I just think it might be better to put a hotel in there if it would stop the financial bleeding and maybe prevent redevelopment of the golf course.

      Delete
    5. Aw don't play dumb, now. Farley let the convention center idea out of the bag some time ago and no, it's not the botanical garden thing.

Exactly whose "problem" are you trying to solve? If the golf course then you mean Ecke holdings and their associates and its success not the residents' job to guarantee.

Any bleeding is their mess to fix, not ours. Try peddling another angle.

    7. The golf course agreement was designed to make a profit for the Eckes. It's got something like a 50 year profit sharing with the city. On top of that the Eckes/Carltas still owe the city over $600,000 from the sales tax money that was advanced when the shopping center was developed. The city council did a big favor for the Eckes a few years ago and suspended the paying of this debt. Who else in Encinitas gets this kind of treatment?

      Delete
    8. Why did the City suspend the requirement for the Eckes to pay a debt? They have multi-millions and stand to profit handsomely when the Carlsbad property is developed. It is pretty obvious who runs this town.

      Delete
    9. Eckes/Carltas asked for the suspension. They always get what they ask for from the city. It was in the years after the 2008 economic collapse. It appeared that they didn't want to put any of their own money in and hoped the suspension would allow enough time for the golf course to recover and the debt paid off with profits from the golf course. The suspension can be renewed in a few years.

And in case you're new to town, you might wipe the dollar signs from your eyes and see that we have out of control traffic issues galore. Cementing over an "infill opportunity" will be strongly opposed and soundly defeated at the ballot box. Save your money for elsewhere.
