7/27/17 City Council meeting open thread

The current city council has continued prior councils' practice of not providing written summary minutes of council discussion, but only "action minutes" which state the outcomes. Encinitas Undercover will provide a forum for observers to record what occurs at each council meeting.

Please use the comments to record your observations.

  1. No council meeting on tv so I'm watching the president make a fool of himself on national tv. What a maroon. Can't see reality!!! Blind as a bat!!

  2. What a choice. Support the proven failure leadership and envade more and more counties leading to bigger and bigger debt but bigger haliburton profits, Or Vote for a egomaniac with terrible hair.....

Both sound equality bad. I will likely vote for Elon Musk or the liberiterian candidate

    1. I had no idea that our counties were under siege! Is this what will happen if we vote no on the Housing plan in November?

    2. 10:12. Elon Musk is a globalist egomaniac stealing from American taxpayers. He is a fraud, a self-serving charlatan, a weasle. Every Tesla is subsidized by the US taxpayer to the tune of close to $20,000 per car. Yes, you heard that right, all of us who pay taxes have had our tax dollars pilfered to gour to pay Elon. This also means all the self-important hipsters driving Tesla, and then using carbon coal fired energy to power them, that may appear as though they are superior in their green activism to the rest of us, is really yet another entity sucling at the teat of taxpayers. Then there is the money that used to go to NASA that now goes directly to Elon Musk , not to benefit all Americans, but to benefit Elon and his buddies.

    3. too bad all the other losers could not produce the awesome product of Elon Musk.

Just like streetscape in Leucadia, and the retards that hate change and can not learn to yield. some can not accept better design of personal mobility machines. Well I hate sitting at red lights wasting life and I hate signals causing massive deaths from idiot drunks running red lights.

Some idiots hate change, others embrace positive change- which are you?

    4. The awesome product of Elon Musk? A vehicle that sucks up coal, adds to the carbon footprint and can't be produced without taxpayer subsidies? In business school we call this a losing ROI and failure. However in the land of Elon Musk and crony capitalism he gets taxpayer money to enrich himself and the media presents him as a hero. Under Obama buddy Elon ( like buddy Cheney under Bush) has profited from the globalist agenda that takes taxpayer money and gives it to cronies and donors. Next time you see a Tesla owner in their $ 80,000 car go up and ask them to thank you, taxpayers pay near $20,000 for each Tesla delivered. Idiots are uninformed people lapping up the lies politicians tell them, be it the rail trail, or Elon Musk's fleecing of taxpayers.

    5. 5:38 - you sooooo miss the point. Elon Musk is not building cars - he's making batteries more efficient, economical and powerful. This is the key to so many advancements in so many areas. Cars are just the current vehicle (pardon the pun) to display how his style of batteries can be used. No, Elon Musk is one of the greats....

    6. The innovations at Space X and Tesla might have happened in the private sector anyway, but it would have taken decades longer. Scale matters in the development and commercial penetration of new tech. Getting to a critical mass where the new technology is sustainable without subsidy is still the goal, but it takes time.

You can light a charcoal grill with matches alone, but it will take many hours and hundreds of matches. Tax breaks and targeted subsidies are the lighter fluid that gets the fire up to temp faster.

Musk's innovations are sustainable in the long run without subsidy, and they will change markets and create good high-paying jobs here in California.

  5. ANy chance the city could clean the sidewalks downtown?? They are beyond filthy. Oh wait, the city is too busy sponsoring murals in alleyways. No spare cash...

  6. Don Barth husband of ex- council member Teresa Barth says he's running for mayor because of lack of leadership at city hall... Hey Don buddy your wife was on the council for 8 years and accomplished what?? More debt, higher salaries and pensions for staff at the expense of the Encinitas taxpayer. Did she get safe passage under the I-5 at Enc. Blvd?? Nope. Did she support the Leucadia streetscape?? Nope. Did she see to it that landscaping in the city received water to grow and flourish?? Nope. Did she authorize tens of thousands of dollars in payments to the mainstreet associations?? Associations that should be self supported. Yes she did. Is this the type of leadership we can expect from you?? God help us!!

  7. Ps- no thanks, we don't need nor want your leadership. Stick with the dying racehorses at DM. Seems someone needs to stop the dying ( killing) of those grand beasts, may as well be you. 8 dead horses in the first 8 days of this season, that's not leadership that's tragic.

  8. Is this for real? I also read Shaffer's husband is also running? Good grief. I thought they had long gone. What's the story?

    1. I think we know what to expect form Barth and Shaffer's husbands "based on their involvement in City matters."

Don Barth wrote a $100 check to support Prop A in 2012. I expect that he will come out in support of the Housing Element like his traitor wife. Steve and Lisa both signed the petition for Prop A--along with Tony Kranz. I expect to hear him also support the Housing Element like his turncoat wife.

They do nothing to make a mockery of Paul Gaspar. They make a mockery of our entire political system by reminding us once again the lack of respect that Teresa Barth and Lisa Shaffer show to our residents with their lies and broken promises.

  9. Geez, such optimism and positivity from the peanut gallery this morning... Wake up on the wrong side of the bed today?

Jury is still out on Mr Musk and the potential of his batteries. Until he figures out a better way to recharge them while they are running or perhaps solar powered car bodies that generate there own charge would be a good start. Just because it's all electric doesn't mean it's a carbon footprint friendly technology.

    1. Oops.. Damn spellcheck! Should be "solar paneled car bodies"

    2. Fisker already tried the solar panel roof. It's expensive and adds less than 1 mile per day of range assuming it's under sunny skies all day.

Quick charging will get better, but electric cars really work better as a second car for daily commuting or day trips rather than cross-country trips.
