  1. Christ, with those candidates we are doomed.
Muir, a giant( no pun intended) tick on the teat of the Encinitas taxpayer. I encourage all of you to come to Leucadia pizza on Mondays to watch him hold court with the firefighters...they drool over his words and sandwhich.
Gaspar, another tax and spend republican. If he makes as poor choices as his wife then the only question to ask will be what high heel shoes will he wear for the council meetings.
Blakespear, a proven failure. She flip flops more on issues than a dying fish on the deck of a boat.
Horvath- another in a long line of "hippie" politicians from Cardiff. A Barth wannabe...How many pair of Birkenstocks does she own??
Kranz- yikes... his deep local roots stretch all the way to Israel as he discovered that selling out is cost effective.

Again , there is no hope of Encinitas, much like the dead whale on the beach, politics in Encinitas STINKS!!!

    7. What a relief Gaspar actually pulled the papers and announced his candidacy. People here will try to slander the man, but he has shown insight, capability, and a clever way of working through politics. Criticism of Gaspar given the alternative is just agenda driven sour grapes. Blakespear has demonstrated that law school does not a lawyer make, voting on measures that have cost this city money, credibility and dignity. As for Horvath, if this city needed Barth back in city hall, we'd just force Barth to run ... or ask Shaffer to give it another go! Nightmare!

    8. 12:01 "a clever way of working through politics"??? What exactly does that mean? If you mean that he will be on the side of developers in a very clever, sneaky way, then he will be just like his wife. I don't expect any different from him.

How many council meetings or other commission meetings has this man attended? Has he ever served on any commission involving the city?

Employing 100 people (part-time at that) does not a good mayor make.

What is his track record besides physical therapy?

What will he do to help the citizens of our city?

Perhaps the GASpars are running out of money and need help by living off the taxpayers.

Thanks, but no thanks. My vote will not be for GASpar.

    9. Where does he come off calling himself "doctor"? He's no MD; maybe a chiropractor. Gaspar's puffery of their qualifications/titles. since this town seems to elect anybody, he figures he jump the money train. Manchester will reward him to dance to the developers' tune - he's got practice with his ballroom partner, crazy eyes!

  5. No wonder no one wants to run. They get trashed before they are out of the gate. I know of several people thinking about it, but they are not interested in having their entire life scrutinized by some of the people on this blog that get to post anonymously. Love you W.c. but when this much trashing foes on, why would anyone want to expose their lives and their family's lives, to this kind of shit. On political matter, it would be nice for people to know who is saying what. I know you won't change your policy, and in most cases I could care less. BUT, if we want some decent people running, maybe on city council issues, you could switch to having people post their names? Just an idea.

    1. Why are you so concerned about who says what? When you decide to get into politics you, your entire family, your background, and anything else you can think of will be scrutinized to the fullest.

If you are not up for it, stay away. That means you are not ready for the job.

    3. I don't think candidates should worry about the juvenile histrionics that occur in the comments section of this blog. That's politics.

In fact, the more insulting the diatribe, the less substantive the message-- which is a good thing, if you're on the receiving end. You don't want your opponents to have substance.

The sniping here in the comments is just noise. As 1:39 said, if you want to do some good, you have to be up for the job.

    1. I think Dr. L is a nice person who cares a lot about our town.

I also believe Stocks probably crossed a line with her, although there is no way to tell if that line crossing rises to the level of criminal or civil court sanctions.

My challenge with Dr. L as an elected official is that she seems fragile (thin skinned), lacks conviction, and wants everyone to like her too much (e.g. Kissing up to JS on Rostra).

I just don't see the personal toughness and decisiveness that a good council candidate should have.

  15. With this slate of candidates we can be certain that:
    No roads will be fixed.
Bums will over run the city.
Downtown will be noisy and drunk filled.
No 101 streetscape will be built.
    No below grade train tracks.

So how will they be different from what we have now?? They won't. Same losing tiger, different stripes.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Beg pardon, your predictions are off:

      Streetscape, sadly, will get built

And you forgot the biggest fact of all: developers will have their way even more than they do already.

      Delete
    2. 8:01- you are wrong. If after 17 years the city hasn't started the streetscape they never will. They will always find something else more important than the beautification of H101.
L101 Mainstreet can't water the flowers in the mediums nor influence city hall to do so, so how will they get the city to focus on the most important project in the city in the past 50 years?? They won't. Here's another prediction, The city will decide they need a NEW city hall. Much like penis envie cities develop project envie. With DelMar building a new city hall soon Encinitas will want the same.

      Delete
    3. Keeping staff fat and happy is more important than Leucadia, any funds for the streetscape will be redirected to the new city hall.

      Delete
  16. You are clearly an idiot. The streetscape is the best thing the city could do.

    ReplyDelete
  17. 9:46pm you are clearly the idiot around here if you believe 5 to 6 roundabouts north of Leucadia Blvd on our major 101 arterial will do anything but exacerbate a traffic flow that is backed up all day long already.

The profit motive is involved here folks, and the community be damned. If this was ever put to a vote, this streetscam plan would be history. We will never have the choice to vote on it.

The handful of supporters who are pushing this are all involved, or for the most part, in the local real estate and developer cartel, call it what you want. The community, who are the truest stakeholders, have little say.

This same handful would love to see the whole corridor become homogenized with the same frontal design along the 2.7 mile run. Adding single lanes on OUR 101 in both directions and the stupid roundabouts is a disaster in the making.

Ideally, this would be on the ballot, but it will never happen. The CCC has to know this should be denied. So should some others around here. If there was a genuine interest on controlling traffic flow through Leucadia, these roundabouts would have been located at equidistant positions, but what ultimately put them where they are now is convenience.

Convenience for whom? The answer to that is the property owners adjacent to these roundabouts. Therein lies the truth. Transparency is long overdue.

    1. Did any one notice the reasons Paul Gaspar gave for running for mayor? He wants to continue the style of his beloved wife so there won't be a void in our city. What the hell is he talking about?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the assumption that a person running for elected office wants to serve their citizens and maintain our roads, etc. etc. etc.

His reasoning is about as shallow as he is. They must think this is some kind of cute game.

I think the man needs to stick to his physical therapy profession and stay the hell out of politics. Just like his wife, politics are way out of their league.

  24. Gaspar's candidacy for mayor shows the audacious level of manipulation that the developers are resorting to. Gaspar says he fears the leadership void of his wife's departure and wants to continue her legacy??!! That would even stretch the sci-fi limits of Comic Con! One thing for sure - he has nothing to lose currying favor with the PAC that supports his wife. If this is the best Encinitas can muster, we're doomed.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Paul Gaspar's statements tying his candidacy to his wife's tenure makes good political sense. He doesn't need to say anything about what he personally will do or what his qualifications are. He just needs people to hear "Gaspar Part 2" and that's how you win the election.

They already know X amount of voters like K. Gaspar, and X is enough to win a seat. Transfer their sentiments to your new candidate, et voila! No need to introduce unforced errors by making new statements. Campaign politics 101. :-)

    1. 12:46 I disagree totally. The people want to know what issues are important and what the candidates views are on them. Just because he happens to be the husband of the current mayor is not a guaranteed seat as there are plenty of people who are not thrilled with the Gaspars. They are too closely aligned with $tocks$ and the developers.

We are looking for a positive change on the council.

      Delete
    2. 12:46 PM Yea, your argument has validity. Paul Gaspar has no political experience whatsoever; why should he qualify for mayor, unless its only functions are to cut ribbons. This is a long shot crap shoot, figuring that the voters are generally clueless. The activists on this blog are the minority that care about the issues and are informed; they may be the only ones to recognize that P.Gaspar is Developer Puppet #2.
