Mizels lobby community groups for support in buying library naming rights

Encinitas Votes:
Dear (Arts Organization):

We are proud of the fact that the Mizel Family Foundation has worked tirelessly through our community activism and philanthropy to make Encinitas a better place.

And now I’m asking for your assistance.

Several months ago, we proposed that the city rename its library to the Patricia Mizel Encinitas Library. In exchange the city would receive $2 million, $500,000 of which will go to the Friends of the Encinitas Library.

I believe this to be a good deal for our city, as our local government is always in need of funding for infrastructure, parks, public safety, or other basic services.

Previously, the City Council supported the concept 4-0, with those voting expressing clear support for the idea.

But now, we hear that some Councilmembers may have changed their mind – and it’s not entirely clear why.

That’s where you come in. Please join me in urging the Encinitas City Council to adhere to their original position in support of accepting this deal. It’s in the best interest of the city and our residents. Please click here to download a sample letter of support for you to send to the Encinitas City Council.

I would greatly appreciate it if your organization would be willing to send a letter as well as encourage your members to send in letters as individuals. Click hereto download a cover letter you can send to your members encouraging them to join our effort.

Please send this letter to our City Council no later than August 12th. Please also feel free to e-mail your letter to council@encinitasca.gov.

In addition, here is a link to this effort’s website, which contains other ways you can take action. Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Steve Mizel Mizel Family Foundation

    1. They seem to be trying to turn the City into their private whore. If they want to fund something that improves the city then let them take part in making it happen. Sure we could sell naming rights to the library, moonlight beach, Encinitas Blvd., and lots of other places. All they want id for us to bend over for them.

  2. Sincerely Steve Mizel, you can take your pittance of a donation elsewhere, like the Israeli occupied Palestinian territory where you built one in the alst few years.

Our Library is a monument to this community and should not be up for sale by our current and limited time council members. They don't have the right to set this precedent for us and the future. It was promised by a council member that this would be on the agenda in July. Now it is scheduled for the middle of August, if they don't try to pull a fast one which they have done so far.

It is good to hear this is not a done deal, but even that should not be of much comfort, considering some of the things that this current council make-up has done. Apparently some council members are listening to this community and good on them. We can hope they maintain some semblance of spine until this proposition is denied, as it should be.

The Encinitas Library is our public treasure. People worked long and hard to bring this beautiful building to fruition and to sell out their efforts for some baubles, relatively speaking, would secure any supporting council members reputation to the trash heap of history.

I would think Kristen is still recusing herself over something she directly brought before the council, so that leaves the other four for us to rely upon to do the right thing next month. Lets hope they hear us this time.

If the Mizels want a monument to themselves here, there are plenty of other needy causes. The Encinitas Library renaming is not one. This community does not want this. Gee thanks Kristen. Not.

That place is a bum hang out for internet. No one checks out books anymore. Another wasteful and unnecessary city facility.

  3. I'm torn.

On one hand, not really into selling naming rights, unless it's for a specified term, with a moral terpitude exit clause.

On the other hand, it would drive our resident anti-Semitic bigot totally nuts, which is a pretty good reason to proceed.

    Decisions, decisions.

  4. I'd prefer the Mizel foundation repave some of our streets, I'd support renaming El Camino Real to Steve Mizel boulevard if he repave a some of the worst streets in the county. Go drive Glen Arbor and tell me that's up to the standards we expect.

  5. Joe Pacific bought the naming rights for Pacific View school back in the '50s. He lived across the street then.

    1. Good point.

Moonlight Beach naming rights were purchased in 1897 by John Quimby Moonlight. It was thought he made his money by patenting and licensing the concept of the naked drum circle. It was later discovered to be a pyramid scheme.

    2. Gary, the guy who used to own the Community Market, first in Leucadia and then at two successive locations downtown, bought the naming rights to the Encinitas Community Park. It's his legacy. The grass is vegetarian.

  6. Ah...what's this? Steven Mizel naming a library after himself. Hmmm, I wonder where this is? Hmm, I wonder how many Encinitas residents know who David Meir Kahane is? Hmmm, I wonder if Encinitas residents know anything about the J Defense League? WAKE UP ENCINITAS...you're been taken over and your culture subverted.

  10. From secret Mizel Foundation hired propaganda firm:
"It’s in the best interest of the city and our residents" to name the city's library after a blatant racist and supporter and provider of those that destroy and denigrate innocent people lives.

"Please click here to download a sample letter of support for you to send to the Encinitas City Council"

Oh yeah, we're gonna get right on this racist propaganda edict!

Good riddance to these racists and bigots.

LMG he will use the term of antisemite to criticize anyone who calls him out on all his blatant racism not to mention his endless dubious lawsuits and alleged tax payer bilking through his MDC Homes and the World Trade Center Group.

  11. Looks like it time to pull back the curtain and start connecting some dots: Mizel funds 'PUBLIC ART' campaigns and 'Paint Encinitas' lead by lesbian activist now hetero Jax Meyers (who now works full time for Leichtag). Here is Carris Rhodes explaining Mizel's involvement on painting utility boxes but let's not be silly or stupid since we all know that ALL PUBLIC ART IS POLITICAL...just like the 'Illegal Aliens Hitting The Beach In The Panga' facing the busiest street in all of Encinitas (compliments of Paint Encinitas and Mizel Foundation) and of course the Surfing Virgen De Guadaloupe (debutted by an Environmental Fascist on...yup...you guessed it, Earth Day...hmmm...what a coincidence).
Mizel is using his illicit funds to support PUBLIC ART warfare. This is a subversive warfare...just like the Illegal Aliens In The Panga.

    1. Instead of Plato's Allegory of the Cave, we are soon to be subjected to Mizel's Allegory of the Cave, where Mr. Mizel and his darling wife will be in charge of hand shadow projections and mind molding. The City Council just needs to pass a law, entitled Brave New World Encinitas Style, obliging resident attendance at these brainwashing ceremonies.

  12. Here is more blatant proof of Mizel's extreme racism at yet another Mizel Museum (it appears that these Mizel's number one goal is to CONTROL AND DOMINATE Americans thoughts and opinions by EDUCATING our children with all of their propaganda and subversive racism).

  15. Our council members should have done their homework [ Kristen?] before ever letting this get as far as it has. OUR library, or for that matter, all of our public treasures should not be for sale. The precedent this sets is a disaster in the making. Money, money, money, oh how you can convince the shortsighted to acquiesce to your every whim.

If these benefactors are genuine in the philanthropic pursuits, there are many other ways to foster good will and actually provide a benefit to the more needy. This is just plain hubris to think they can put their name on anything with whatever dollars they flash before our council members eyes. It worked for our mayor apparently.

Council, you know what needs to be done. Don't sell out your hometown to anyone that comes along with deep enough pockets.

We have honored distinguished citizens by commemorating their names because of their extraordinary service to this community and not by how many dollars they were able to donate. Giving money to buy their names onto our public treasures is nothing we should support.

Council do the right thing next month and deny this precedent setting, ill advised action. Let Kristen find her campaign contributors elsewhere without selling out our town before she is gone from our body politic.

Keep the Encinitas Library, the Encinitas Library.

Our Encinitas Library is not yours to sell off. You are here on a temporary basis, some less than others. Our Library is here for all and for all time.

  16. I find it reprehensible that we would even consider the Mizel's offer based upon what they stand for and what they represent. I hope our council doesn't turn a blind eye for the sake of "money" to set a precedent that would forever ruin our city and its treasures. Shame on GASpar for letting it get this far.

I suggest the Mizel's go elsewhere and see if they can dupe another city to get something with their name on it.

Encinitas can not and should not be bought and sold.

  18. bilk/bilking: obtain or withhold money from (someone) by deceit or without justification; cheat or defraud.
"the Mizel brothers fraud and tax evasion has bilked the taxpayer of billions of dollars." Also: evade and elude.

  19. In the early 1990s, federal law-enforcement officials indicted his company and his top deputy, David Mandarich, for making fraudulent campaign contributions. Mizel doesn't talk about those times, but according to Securities and Exchange Commission documents, MDC reimbursed subcontractors for contributions that those companies made to Mizel-favored politicians and political causes. The company pleaded guilty and paid a $220,400 fine. The charges against Mandarich were dismissed.

Then there was the savings-and-loan debacle.

At the time, MDC was a major borrower from Silverado Savings and Loan--about $53 million, according to published documents. When Silverado collapsed, and other S & Ls around the country, too, the federal government stepped in to clean up the mess, repay depositors and send a few people to jail. Mizel came away from that scandal with financial bumps and bruises.

  21. Thank you Steve Mizel for your latest post. This begging for public support is a clear indication that your attempt to buy your family's name onto OUR library is at risk, as well it should be.

That Kristin felt the motivation to ever bring this before our council in the first place should be more than enough to relegate her political career to the trash heap.

Illusions of grandeur showed how easy it was for her to sell out our community's best interests in favor of monied interest supporting your campaign for supervisor.

All this was brought on by your handlers thinking that somehow this was a good idea? You need some new handlers other than $tock$ and Andreen and the Rotary Club and the Lincoln Club and that very long list of nationwide contributors that everyone should check out for themselves. There are many recognizable names from across the country.

Our local gal sure seems to have drawn in many nationally connected repugnicans, sic, sick, sick. Thank you Kristen for bowing out of our fair city. after such a short time, which felt all too long for anyone paying attention.

Once a tool, ever a tool. We will not miss you. Why would we? Your campaign posters spouted mistruths on your accomplishments here that left many wondering what? what? Where did that come from? We never saw any of that during your term here. Imagination can be a great thing, but your service to our community does not reflect the false reality promised by your recent campaign statements.
