Elderly man killed in hit-and-run in crosswalk near Oak Crest

Coast News:
An 87-year-old man who was critically injured by a hit- and-run motorist in Encinitas died today at a hospital and the suspected hit-and-run driver was arrested, a sheriff’s spokeswoman said.

The unidentified 87-year-old man was walking in the crosswalk near the intersection of Balour and San Abella drives, when he was struck by a pickup truck going northbound on Balour Drive, said Deputy Oscar Butler of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

The 24-year-old suspect, Alexander Vasquez, has now been booked on suspicion of hit-and-run causing serious injury/death and vehicular manslaughter, Sipley said. Vasquez may have been driving under the influence when the crash took place, she added.
This is only the latest in a recent string of serious hit-and-runs and other fatal hits on pedestrians and bicyclists in Encinitas.

UPDATE: The victim is Jack Hesselbach, a longtime Crest Drive resident.

Someone with the same name as the suspect works at the Aviara health care center on Regal Road.

  1. Encinitas is almost as safe as Newport Beach for pedestrians and bicyclists . Absolutely terrible .

It’s too bad that Encinitas spends all of its focus and money on trophy projects and not unwrapped safety improvements .

Maybe the new year will bring a new direction for the city. I hope so for resident sake .....

  2. Isn’t this the same place where people ridiculed pedstrian bridges just a few days ago? And now they ridicule the lack of pedestrian safety?

    1. I walk daily here. Things have changed. More cars and more aggressive drivers. Pedestrians need to be more aware. You can have the right of way and still get creamed. Multi million dollar bridges will just feed the cronies.

  3. So what else is new?? After the city pays out millions to the mother of the boy killed at Santa Fe and I-5, it still hasn't fixed the problem at Encinitas Blvd and I-5. How many times must it be said: infrastructure infrastructure infrastructure.
Blakespear this man's death is your responsibility.

    1. The council is busy with ridiculous trophy projects like the $5 million lifeguard/ Bikini patrol McMansion.

What an expensive piece of shit on our beautiful coastline.

  5. Being a bicyclist or pedestrian is hazardous in this city. I was in a crosswalk and a driver just sped on thru, ignoring the stop sign. The driver saw me, but didn't care. RIP to the elderly man.

  6. And, why are we special? It is dangerous any place you have vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians.

  7. This intersection is inside or very close to a school zone speed limit on Balour. Many drivers consider this city a free for all because law enforcement does not enforce speed limits, window tints, modified muffler noise, cell phone use while driving, drunk driving and illegal parking aggressively enough. If we are going to add loads of new bars and housing here, we better have the manpower to enforce the laws. RIP sir, you did not live 87 years to get hit by some damn fool in an intersection.

    2. "Here" meaning the city of Encinitas. I have lived all over this country including several metro areas and I have never witnessed the vehicular lawlessness anywhere that I am seeing now. The noise from modified mufflers in my neighborhood reaches an intolerable level on a daily basis. Are we becoming a sanctuary state for immigrants or for lawless ignorant assholes?

  8. Yep...

I can't remember the last time I saw a cop giving traffic tickets.

All the funs are going to flying helicopters (super fun workday and very expensive and environmentally damaging), and chatting it up around the beach.

City Manager rather focus on what color to paint the roads. Sigh.

  9. The incessant trolling against certain city operatives here on EU is about nothing other than creating division. Don't buy into it.

Certain employees serve at the discretion of council. Blaming them is as transparent as the trolls who are left over from previous administrations despicable behavior, trying to divide and conquer, in retribution for the way history shown them for what they were while in office and still are. The remnants of their political machine are still active.

Thus the nonstop trolling here. Calling them out by name may feel good, but doesn't appear to bother them one bit, since they have no conscience.

  10. 3:26-

Sounds like the mad rantings of the wild eyed folk.

The point is the City is being mismanaged. Big-time!

  11. 9:14pm your reference to wild eyed folk is not lost upon anyone who has followed the maniac incessant mentioning of a citizen that never posts here, and has nothing to do whatever thread is being presented.

The bullying goes on and you will have your day, if not in court, surely in the physical manifestations of your sick depraved mind. You fool no one but yourself if you think there will be no price to pay for the bullying you have fostered over the years to someone who does not deserve to be brought into whatever issue you pollute with your obsession.

Get some professional help while you can.

  13. No 1:33pm, and you damn well know it.

She never posts here and you damn well know that too.

You continue to be what you have always been slimy mikey. Grow up.

Try to be a man who doesn't bully women for some obsessive compulsion that you have trouble staying away from and exhibiting your ongoing absolute lack of any class. You are a pariah around here and this community knows this only too well.

Here is hoping in the new year, a new you may come forward, while you still have some days left. Try it. You might like it.

  14. right! Never!?

The only way you could honestly say never is if you are her.

-wild eyes is such a old hag.

  15. 7:52am slimy mikey, you can deny all you want, which is your sop. She has nothing to do with any conversation here on EU and hasn't for years.

Your obsession is sick. You are sick. Get some help.

You are the only hag that posts here. Your perception of reality is faulty, which for you, is nothing new.

    Grow up.
