City commissioner wants to ban clean, cheap, plentiful natural gas

Union-Trib:
First came the plastic bag and polystyrene container bans. Now Encinitas may be exploring whether to limit natural gas use.

City Environmental Commissioner James Wang, who was instrumental in the city’s polystyrene and plastic bag ban campaigns, is asking his fellow commissioners to seek City Council approval for an ordinance prohibiting the installation of natural gas infrastructure in new buildings.

37 comments:

  1. The environmental commission has direct orders from the despot Mayor Blakespear to develop a yearly plan to keep them busy. Next up is an ordinance to ban sales of certain plastic bottles. Most of the city trees are chopped down for more buildings and asphalt and banning more plastics is the best the commission can do? Don't rock Blakespear's boat or she'll throw you overboard.

  2. Note to City Commissioner, you are insane. Now, if the rest of these buffoons go for this moronic idea you will know how messed up they truly are.
Be very careful. These leftists are doing what leftists do, control everything be it a good or a bad idea.
Remember when they wanted to start their own electric distribution system? More insanity.
Wang Chung needs to be sent packing. Sadly nut cases like these believe they are doing something good. So did Stalin

  3. Ban natural gas??? Rely on electricity, that is generated primarily by fossil fuels? Blakespear and crowd need to go.

    2. How does this banning of natural gas interact with the cities forming their own electric companies? Restraint of trade? Anti-trust? RICO Act? Monopoly of electric power with no other choice?

    3. 10:39 - bird cage carpet? Good gawd you're stupid. You do not know birds or The Times.

    4. 11:18 It isn't an interaction. It is a sense issue. It's nonsense to do either. Don't go off into the Monopoly of world. People have "no concept" of what it takes to form their own electric company. You people think the electric lines underground or overhead takes care of themselves? People are delusional. And now a numbskull thinks it a good idea to stop new gas services to new construction? I suggest anyone that thinks to be a good idea should get back on their medications.

    5. The NY Times is one of the only news organizations doing actual journalism. Fox News is nothing but a bunch of corporate propagandists spewing their opinions. Look at your apples news stories from fox, it’s all local crime, gossip, and fart jokes. Fox does a great job of keeping the masses ignorant and easily controlled.

      The stupidity is astounding.

    7. And there it is. These responders of positive note to the N.Y Times. That is the type of readers that read the bird cage carpet. Quite typical

  5. Wang is a good friends with the Mayor. So my guess is the City Council will pass this. Look for him to run for Council if he lives in an open district in 2020. His tenure on the Environmental Commission is up in 2021, and he will have to leave that commission. He's trying to make a name for himself by suggesting some really unrealistic ideas. However, the Mayor and her 5-0 Council (except for Weds. night) will go along with what she says as they fear her wrath. Kranz defected Weds. night, and he is up for re-election. Watch for her to scorn him at the next meeting. I was surprised that Kranz didn't actually vote for the homesless housing, as he took a trip on Leichtag to Israel some years ago. Maybe he figured that they would ll vote for it, and he could pretend he cared about Prop. A.

    1. Wang lives in Cardiff. He will have to wait until 2022 to run when Jody Hubbard's 4-year term is up. Word is that she doesn't want to run for a second term. She could change her mind. Or Blakespear could tell her to resign and appoint Wang. With the latest machinations at city hall, Blakespear is capable of anything. She's turned into an autocrat.

  6. Do the likes of Wang own shares or stock in an electric company?
Natural gas is the cheapest form of energy there is. Per delivered BTU. it is one third the price of electricity based on the cheapest tier.
Why are these people making propositions and decisions on subjects that they are poorly educated on?
Where is all this cheap electricity supposed to come from?
California does not want nuclear or coal powered electric generating plants, but would rather be at the mercy of out of state generating plants. Anyone remember Gray Davis and the electricity crisis?

    1. We have just had 3 days of rain and little sun. 72 hours, including night time without solar power. Production of solar panels is not pollution free, and neither will be the disposal at its life end. Although it has become cheaper, systems are still expensive. Solar can help, but it is not the whole answer.

      Delete
    2. its the whole answer.

    3. Solar panels still generate electricity on rainy and cloudy days, 8:00. Educate yourself.

    4. Solar panels still generate some on cloudy days.
The big plus would be a battery storage bank. I looked into this but I was fresh out of $30,000 for top of the line unit/s and I didn't want those ugly panels on my roof. If it is cloudy and rainy day after day like in Seattle, forget it. And, it's not the whole answer. Nor are those wind mills. Nice try. Drive out to Palm Springs and see the wind mills, they mostly sit still.
It boils back down people insisting the generating plants be closed in San Diego and Orange Counties. They got their wish and now the prices of electricity are high as it is imported. The fools responsible for complaining about generating plants are to blame. Look to them for the stupidity and high electrical prices.

    5. 1:56- power company paid message.

Solar is the answer. There are plenty of ways to store power during dark hours. Educate yourself or at least speak the truth.

    6. 8:40 Solar isn't the answer and if you knew anything you would know that. It has limits and limitations. If "you" educated yourself you would be aware of this.

  7. So we are supposed to cook without gas, while the global elite have fleets of mega yachts, private jets, helicopters, submarines, and mega mansions? Let’s soak these global mega polluters with carbon taxes and for gods sake kill this ridiculous idea.

  8. Electric water heaters in hospitals, care facilities, schools with gyms and/or pools, private gyms with or without pools, apartment houses and condos with common hot water, convention centers that host banquets, big hotels, etc. Would that work? Is it practical?

    1. combined cycle, natural gas, offering the ability to generate electricity and use waste heat provide for water heating, etc. Combined cycle is very, very efficient. It's a bridge tech, ready to go now, (has been used for more than 100 years in fact). It's a really bad idea to limit gas in the near term. Yes solar storage will get there, but it's not there now, nor is the generation capacity. I own solar, both water and electric. I put in solar panels in the late 1980's. I have newer panels now. I stay current with the tech available. The idea of eliminating Gas in new construction is a challenging idea. Solar storage is a good idea as well. But if you lower your service and capability as you transition, you're going to lose people. Let the market continue to work and provide the right inducements for solar and solar storage. Please do not fall for shutting off gas to new construction . For those advocating for only solar, please visit https://RMI.org

  9. Yes. Solar works for all. plus you do not need to invade countries and kill millions of people to secure its supply.

  10. SANDAG adopted new housing numbers yesterday. How come no one is talking about the new zoning we will have do? New numbers on top of the rollover is crazy!!!!

    1. There was a workshop at city hall on Monday to discuss the new numbers. It was recorded. The video should be available on the city website. Dave Barquist, the consultant, took quite a beating from the residents.

  11. 50 Megawatts of clean renewable power 24x7 is coming our way soon via the Sunrise power link: https://www.cthermal.com/

It’s a geothermal plant at Salton Sea tapping into heat generated by the San Andreas Fault. That field has the potential to power over a million homes. It’s base load, meaning it doesn’t depend on wind, sun, or storage. There is research underway into cracking subsurface rocks to expand that field which could double its capacity.

There isn’t one magic bullet clean energy solution. It’s going to be an all of the above strategy. It’s coming, and the naysayers need to get out of the way, and/or yield to younger generations who will pay a price for the selfishness and fatalism of their elders.

    1. Let's hope it works better than the geothermal they tried in the '70's. Yes, it's been tried before. Heber 1979 SDG&E.

    2. The water was too corrosive. The thermal well was shut down. There is a fully functional thermal energy plant on the Mexican side selling power to the US. Or at least it was.

    3. 6:44, there are currently 11 geothermal plants producing energy near the Salton Sea.

  12. Let us get back on track. This foolish notion of stopping installs of natural gas services to new construction is nuts. If these foolish people follow thru with that then you know they should be on mind numbing medications. As time goes by I have never read so many bad ideas coming from any city council.
    What is wrong with them?

    1. I agree with that it's a bad idea. But totally disagree with your characterization of people. I have (and continue to ) own and use solar since the 1980's. That said, natural gas will continue to be a very important bridge fuel for the next two decades. It can be used very efficiently. A better idea would be to require combined cycle, natural gas electric generation, and water heating, for both hot water and space heating. On all new projects. The tech is here, and avail. and very cost effective.

  13. I'll tell you what is wrong with them. Road diets for El Camino Real, homeless parking in a neighborhood, belief in man made global warming, building a monstrosity apartment building on rural residential property, thinking about stopping natural gas installs on new buildings, not selling the elementary school property that the city pays tax payer money on. All beyond bad ideas. These are people without a lick of sense.

Also add the new electric company run by city of San Diego and Chula Vista where Encinitas is a small, insignificant but paying member and has a Mayor Blakespear that likes being bossed and bullied around by the big cites while she bosses and bullies those who voted for her.

  15. Oh ya', creating your own electric company is a great idea.
These morons will see how saving a few cents will backfire.
I tried to tell everyone about power plants in San Diego but greasy gray haired hippies marched around and around screaming about power plants. Now you are paying the price.
Who will repair power lines and transformers when they fail? The greasy gray haired hippies?
