Encinitas officials are exploring the idea of raising the city’s sales tax from 7.75 percent to 8.75 percent. It’s estimated this could generate $15.4 million a year. City officials have said they would like to use the money to pay for much-need improvements to the city’s roadways, drainage systems and other infrastructure.The last time the council tried to raise the sales tax was 2014, when the progressives were thwarted by the lack of a supermajority on the council.
Several council members said Feb. 28 that there were strong reasons for them to support raising the sales tax, but said they wanted to conduct additional research before making a decision about the ballot measure. They agreed to approve spending up to $103,500 for additional consulting work and other assistance related to the project.

3) Would you like to raise sales taxes so that Encinitas' hundreds of city workers can continue to earn more than $92,000 on average plus $36,000 in benefits?
Do you think those would poll overwhelmingly positive? 60% or 70% in favor as Mayor Barth suggested last night?

Current scenario for people with assets in Encinitas-
places those individuals in California’s largest state income tax bracket — at 9.3% — which applies to single filers who earn between $61,215 and $312,686 per year, or married couples filing jointly with an annual income of $122,429 to $625,372.

That’s on top of federal income tax — which, with a household income of $137,000 would be around 22-24% — plus property taxes of around 0.71% and sales tax of at least 7.25%. That’s a lot of tax to pay each year — and it has stung Californians even more in the wake of COVID-19, when the nation has battled inflation.
Flushing down goes the economy, and Encinitas is a stain on the porcelain with its leader’s derelict policy decisions.
I know 2 people leaving this week and both are leaving because they can not afford to live here. One couple bought a house in florida after he got approved for a job transfer. Their rental is was getting sold and they could not afford market rate and still save money, they are DINKs. The other inherited their house but the property tax increase became more than their entire income so they are selling it and moving to AZ. Meanwhile, 280 million tourist enjoyed the fruit of our tax burden last year. There are about 1 million hotel beds in the state, our housing is going to zonies on vacay. Dont feel bad about moving to AZ and raising their prices.
