Encinitas man dies in late night bicycle accident

Encinitas Advocate:
Someone found the 48-year-old man lying on the ground in a bike lane on South Coast Highway near Ocean Street and called 911 around 12:07 a.m., sheriff’s Lt. Zheath Sanchez said. A bike was found nearby. Deputies and paramedics attempted life-saving measures, but the man died before he could be taken to a hospital.

The bicyclist has been identified as 48-year-old Ryan Currie of Encinitas, according to a news release. An initial investigation has revealed Currie was riding northbound along the east side of S. Coast Highway in the protected bicycle lane on an Electra Townie bicycle.
There was no evidence of a collision with a vehicle, but perhaps a collision with Blakespear's lane barriers?

Ocean Street is the north end of Solana Beach, but the protected bicycle lane starts north of there, across from Cardiff State Beach.

  3. Another horrific stain on our city council and it’s bad decisions Marco, of course, wants to double down and take the travel lanes from 4 to 2 on that stretch.

Let’s keep taking lanes and adding people. Glad Marco is a sidecar clown instead of a council clown, because these bad ideas continue to be bad and we’re now seeing the outcomes of progressive policies.

    This city is sadly fucked.

  6. Just watched the replay. Olympic cyclist Shaun Wallace said what had to be said including how Jeremy Blakespear was the "architect" of the deadly cycle trap. Kellie had her usual blank stare on and Kranz yes called in reinforcements. Notably missing was Gonzalez to chastise Wallace and blame Mr. Currie. Sincerely hoping as a taxpayer that the city loses its shirt on this one. Too many warnings ignored by the detached and arrogant council members Blakespear-Kranz-Hinze-Lyndes-Mosca to say this couldn't have been avoided.

  12. Phony better suggest they raise the sales tax increase 26 % to a 2% boost to 9.75% for everything that Encinitas residents buy.

The list of lawsuits and payouts is not looking good for Encinitas.

Roberta Walker, sharrow mow down - City installed- $11,000,000.00 payout in lawsuit.

City installed faulty, bike, land design Leucadia Boulevard- Dr. Worley died in bad design- The City is trying to bury the issue like Dr. Worley, but compensation with the wrongful death has to exceed- $20,000,000.00.

And now we have the long list of lawsuits and pain and suffering on S. HWY 101 estimated over $40,000,000.00. I feel horrible for the children that are left with no parents.

Then future pain suffering death at known door zone on N. Coast Highway, 101 southbound at Leucadia Boulevard-

    1st one $20,000,000.00.

And now we have the unbelievable crappy design that’s being built in front of SDA, estimated payout on that project within the first year at over $20,000,000.00.

I’ll put this one low because we know this city does not have this kind of money.

The city better get some for sale signs up on its property while prices are still good.

With the pending huge 26% sales tax increase and Phony giving away all of existing residents assets to the homeless, prices in Encinitas will not stay up with Solana Beach and Carlsbad.

With all these bad decisions it’s probable the State will need to get involved, like it did with the city of , and figure out how to pay for all of these liabilities and lawsuits. Maybe the state will start taxing the homeless to pay for all the debts on bikes, and Encinitas? it will likely start by offloading all of the cities assets, which are mainly property.

The huge 26% increase in sales tax will have a direct impact on those who own property in Encinitas.

if you voted for Kranz, you caused this mess. Own it.

    3. 6:26 how you feel about Walker's accident where she claimed to have been "confused" by the sharrows markers she advocated for? $11M payout there ok by you? Dr. Jennings where the city immediately removed the bollards after his death? Why would they do that if the design was just fine and dandy? Why would they not defend instead of pay on his lawsuit if there was no blame on the city's side?

Let's hear it because right now you're not making sense.

      Delete
    4. Sharrows don’t change anything. They are simply a reminder to drivers that the law allows cyclists to take the lane. That right exists whether there’s a painted reminder or not. They have zero effect on traffic laws.

The settlement in that case was not about sharrows, it was about the fact that the city had a long, documented history of knowing that the road design was unsafe for cyclists. They had a plan for decades to update the roadway (Streetscape) but they failed to implement it, so the dangerous condition persisted without remedy for far too long. So yes, on that basis, the settlement was justified.

As to Woodley, the housing development at that location changed the traffic conditions. The city was too slow to recognize the need for a turn lane for traffic entering the development. I don’t ascribe any malice or evil intent on the part of the city. In a city the size of Encinitas, small details like this are bound to be overlooked from time to time. It’s unfortunate and tragic for the family.

But what it is NOT is a rational excuse to condemn the whole concept of safer infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians. And anyone who seeks to make that leap is an absolute fucking moron.

      Delete
    5. Sorry.

      Jennings. Not Woodley.

    6. There was no "knowing," there was very questionable behavior on Walker's part that's been done to death. Bottom line: had she full stopped at the bottom of her street, looked left before proceeding right, she would have seen the truck. Not what happened.

If it was the housing that caused the traffic conditions, why did the city immediately after his death remove the bollards that THEY had placed - not the developer "changing" anything.

I place no malicious intent on the city, either. But when our supposed experts on staff are incompetent and the council refuses to course correct this deadly incompetency, then that starts moving into the malice category.

Your "small detail" killed someone. You'd be singing a different tune if Dr. Jennings Worley had been your family member, trust me.

Finally, it is perfectly rational to condemn a whole concept when you look at Encinitas' track record of nearly three dozen injuries since "improvements" went in and two deaths. Stop and start over and for god's sake do not let any council member spouses create the plan.

      Delete
    7. You ask:

“ If it was the housing that caused the traffic conditions, why did the city immediately after his death remove the bollards that THEY had placed - not the developer "changing" anything.”

The answer is that before the development, there wasn’t a need for a turn lane, so the original bollard placement was perfectly fine.

Once construction started, there was a lot of contractor and truck traffic that needed to get into and out of the development. As the entry road became more active, there needed to be a turn lane allowing the construction traffic to slow and turn into the development. The truck that hit the cyclist swerved quickly into the bike lane because there was no place to gradually merge over and slow.

The fact of construction changed the traffic conditions, and the city was slow to recognize it. My assumption is that the removal of bollards and installation of a turn lane was probably in the plans, but not soon enough.

    8. As to “there was no ‘knowing’. . .”

      Hogwash.

The city council documents, presentations, and plans for Streetscape date back decades, and they all specifically stated that one of the primary reasons to reconfigure the roadway was to remedy the known unsafe condition of having no bike path and parallel parking along the road in close proximity to lanes designed for high speed traffic when 101 was the main road between LA and San Diego (i.e. before I-5).

Any plaintiffs attorney would have used all of those documents at trial to show that the city knew the road was unsafe for cyclists and did nothing to fix it for decades.

The only silver lining is that the Roberta settlement finally got the city off its ass to implement Streetscape.

      Delete
    9. In the Walker case, the sharrows and striping on highway 101 were not painted and signed to code. That's the main reason the insurance company wouldn't want to take it to trial. Everyone knew Roberta was primarily at fault.

  17. Walker was at fault without a doubt. That she was close to our mayor at that time, resulted in an $11 million dollar give away scam of our tax dollars for a friend and supporter of catherine.

Anyone who looks at that intersection and the empty post office parking lot before dawn knows that she rode her bike across the empty parking lot and out onto the 101 in the dark without looking for traffic and probably with headphones on. Whatever, she was not paying attention to the traffic at that hour as she merged onto the roadway.

Her fans will always cry out against any condemnation expressed toward the cause of the accident that did not have to happen.

Of course she did not go down to the stop sign, stop and look for southbound traffic. No one would. We would all angle across the empty parking lot as she did. The difference is most of of us would have checked the traffic before entering the roadway. She did not. Was she distracted at that moment?

I will tell you who knows better than anyone. The unfortunate driver of the truck that was never cited because it was not his fault. The cops knew that and were prevented from letting the truth be known to the public by the mayor.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I believe since the City is paying with tax payers money they need to discuss the public payments. Where did the City disclose the amount they paid and what was the amount?

Here is last years Coast news story, but they didn't follow-up.

Despite three years of legal finger-pointing and numerous counterclaims, the Worley family filed a notice of conditional settlement on April 12, and the court generated a notice of dismissal in the case on April 19.

Ricardo Baca, an attorney representing the City of Encinitas, told The Coast News all the parties have started the process of “reaching a global settlement” in the lawsuit.

“Nothing is finalized, but the talks have begun,” Baca said, who would not discuss any other details about the case.

Attorneys for the plaintiffs and other co-defendants did not respond to repeated requests for comment. No additional information is available on possible settlement terms.

A civil jury trial was scheduled to begin on April 28.

"Classical" liberals today are defined as far right. That is how far the social fabric has fallen. The Covid years bullshit allowed Fakespear and Margo to really ram their extremist communist ideology up the proverbial asses of the entire local population. The communista ideology in sacramento helped these local communists pieces of shit apply their stupidity on unsuspecting population that was just trying to get through the bullshit sensationalism of a bad flu virus. The things they did such as having extremist BLM rallies in and around city hall and it's surrounding was the tell. BLM has been 100% proven to be an antisemitic terrorist organization that lined the pockets of the stupidest idiots of society. It's all so obvious now but the realityh is to eradicate these types is going to take a concerted effort to arrest and imprison these people for many, many years - some even for life terms. It seems there may not be the will for that to happen but it is really and truly the only solution.

      - has openly welcomed everyone in the world including fentanyl zombies from San Diego to Encinitas for free living, begging, and stealing other peoples things, and other, malicious and harmful crimes.

      - He’s pushing his unnecessary pet projects as the city’s infrastructure and roads are crumbling.

Examples - not maintaining a simple storm drain as costing the city over $15 million to repair on Lake drive, all of the streets are crumbling and are looking like the City of San Diego, and will get even worse. Needed projects are being able to be funded because Kranz wasteful money on the pet project and unnecessary staff building like more lifeguard bikini watchers and planners for BS programs. North Highway one01 is a flooded disaster, due to Crances converting nice previous earth to impervious, parking lots and greatly increasing the runoff and not building any needed drain system.

      - Kranz is focused on fencing off the coastline instead of maintaining access and improving pathways and access to the coastline.

The list goes on, and on everything that loser touches turns to shit.

Encinitas is a beautiful and nice place to live because of former city founders and active residence like Bruce Eller and I hate to say Sheila Cameron, and many other good and smart people.

  43. Good Morning Encinitas-

I am a professional who works with families that have experienced wrongful deaths due to actions of others. Sometimes those actions are carelessness, some times malicious, and other times the liable party was not even aware that they were creating a hazardous condition. Regardless, people are responsible for their action and for creating hazardous conditions that harm people. Its the families left behind that motivates me to make those liable take responsibility for their actions.

I am greatly concerned with the conditions that exist in Encinitas and for the public, and I'm here to help those families that need assistance.

I'm working on a possible draft - CASE: Williams, et al v. City of Encinitas, et al; Case No. 41-2024-00005475-CU-PO-NC

Due to the well documented existing hazardous condition, this one is pretty much a slam dunk and I'm sure will settle quickly, no matter what the family ask is. I'm estimating at least double what was granted to Ms. Walker.

We all want to make Encinitas safer, so lets work together and document all the hazards the City initiated on that formerly beautiful road. Thanks for your help, lets be respectful for the grieving family and give them their due space and peace. There is plenty of time to address the responsible parties for this very sad loss. With that same respect, the Williams children need our help.

In building my file, I would love to hear any attorney's latest information on the Worley, et al v. City of Encinitas, et al; Case No. 37-2021-00005460-CU-PO-NC. These prior cases are extremely important with the our cases moving forward. Any info on this is appreciated.

To help address this current hazard, please post your findings and observations. Some obvious ones include bollard and curb stop are abruptly erected in a poor lit. I drove by last night and could hardly see the first bollard or the curb stop. I'd suggest the City address the existing hazard or at minimum put some lights on that area, or at least some reflective tape and make it more visible. The little reflective tape out there now was covered in black from possibly being hit so frequently.

Second observation is that location is on a significant down slope and bike and cars are traveling very fast. One question - should traffic be going that fast in that area? Is that safe for what appears to be a popular public space?

God bless Encinitas and thanks for your help in addressing this sad issue, but we will do our part to hold those accountable to make financial restitution to the Williams children.

Leaving with the following- "All of our actions have consequences, so please give proper consideration when erecting fixed objects in heavily used public spaces with fast moving people." -Anon

    - God bless Encinitas this wonderful Sunday Morning

  57. It’s a shame this guy had a heart attack, or was drunk, or had a puncture and hit the ground without a helmet, or any of the other possibilities.

  58. Look no further than Gonzalez doing the city’s work by blaming the rider per precedent set by BlakeSpear. He was doing it back when the accidents starting piling up too, no shame or sense of decency. He’s got that in common with the watchdog refugees.

  59. I guess it's that time of year again where people say the quiet part out loud.

EV exists to serve two purposes.

The first and most obvious purpose is to manipulate voters in the directions Lorri and her friends desire. There's literally thousands of examples showing how this is accomplished and multiple occasions where she's slipped up and let people see behind the curtain. Even casual observers notice the selective enforcement of ever changing rules, one-sided bullying and personal attacks, banning of members without cause, promotion of patently false information, and on and on and on. Everyone knows the game that's being played including those that benefit from it. Over the years I've talked to enough people all over the political spectrum and on all sides of the issues. They all know it and most will privately admit it. Those same people will then publicly deny it or simply refuse to comment.

The second purpose of EV is to make Lorri feel good. Beyond the standard social media dopamine reward, EV makes her feel good in a few different ways. She feels good when EV accomplishes the first purpose of manipulating voters, when her accomplices shower her with praise for accomplishing that goal, when she can exert control over others, and when she can get sympathy from others.

Despite failing health and mental acuity, Lorri isn't stupid. Deep down she knows all of the above to be true. She knows that she's used by most of the people she thinks of as friends. I'd wager that sometimes she even admits it to herself.

  60. You don't have a clue about either point you made up about Lorri.

You have made it quite clear what a lowlife you are. Good job on that, and only that.

Ever talk to people who went to school with Tony? Not a compliment in sight.

    1. 👆🏾 true that… they all said he was a tool back then and he’s still a tool….

he would definitely be on the streets if his legal papers wife didn’t marry him to care for him and give him a roof over his head,

Victim mentality for life. No matter how much he is on the lamb and ruining Encinitas these are his glory days.

Once he is removed, he will only be known as the The Town Dunce.

      Or, at best, Dalakranz.
