Meet your first mayoral candidate

... the only declared mayoral candidate so far, Alex Fidel.

His campaign page on Facebook:

Fidel can be heard in this internet radio interview (starts about 02:05:00) discussing issues including the Federal Reserve, militarization of our local police and fire services, Agenda 21, and legalization of marijuana.

Fidel's positions on issues stem from his broader green-libertarian political philosophy. He has not, to our knowledge, weighed in directly on many of the contentious local issues keeping Encinitans up late at city hall. How does a libertarian weigh a bar owner's right to do business against the neighbors' rights to peace and quiet? How would an anti-Agenda-21 libertarian push back against state-mandated high-density development?  What would Fidel do about Encinitas' pay and pension practices, His Excellence Gus Vina, and comic attorney Glenn Sabine?

  3. It is a great, and different, site. I will be interested in hearing more of what you have to say about how you would manage our community in the days to come. Thanks for stepping up.

  4. Q. What controls, if any, should be placed on the right to own a gun? Is there an effective way to keep guns out of the hands of madmen and criminals without encroaching on the rights of free, law-abiding citizens? - See more at: http://libertycandidates.com/2013/05/alex-fidel-liberty-candidate-for-mayor-of-encinitas-california/#sthash.KXZtIuMP.dpuf

"A. There should be none or as few as possible. I am scared of mental health, because they can point out to all the radical activists and say they are mentally unfit or medical cannabis patients and say they are mentally unfit. The city of Encinitas adopted a resolution supporting Feinstein’s gun legislation that hadn’t even been passed yet. "

"Scared of Mental Health". Boy, did that come out wrong. Be interesting to see his take on some local issues. I applaud him for his engagement. That said, his chance of winning is 0%. Don't rain hate down on me, just going off what I've seen of longshot campaigns in the past, including Bob Nanniga's. Joe conservative in New Encinitas doesn't want to hear about the wacky....

    1. 12:53-You do have some reasonable concerns about mental health issues. As you may already know, the former Soviet Union, sent people protesting Communism were sent to mental hospitals. There is a recent case of a woman who disagreed with our own government and was sent to a psych. facility. Dave Roberts, Pam Slater-Price's replacement, is looking into Laura's Law. If you are not familiar with this law, it basically says that if someone thinks you could be dangerous, even if you have never done anything], you could be committed to a psych. facility. All of this is very real. As a "shrink" I have the "power" to put anyone I think is a danger to him or herself or is a damage to another person, into a psych. facility for 72 hours. It is called a 5250. Law enforcement also has this power. I applaud this young mans interest into our CIty government. Whether all of his ideas have any bearing on how on how to run out community remains to be seen. He is 22 years old and may not be quite ready for prime time. But I am going to see him at his event and talk with him. Maybe we need some younger and different blood at the CIty?

      Delete
    2. All I can say is where were you when my neighbor went off his meds. Believe you me, we tried to get him 5250. No luck. It was a rough couple of months were we basically hid in the house. I don't want to be a "noodge", but what was the specific case of the woman who disagreed with our gov. and was sent to a psych facility. Obviously that would be a big deal, and I would oppose it.

On the opposite side of the coin, a lot of talk now days verges on the paranoid/conspiracy kind of mindset, both left and right. I personally don't find it very healthy. This isn't to say there aren't legitimate questions about surveillance, legalization of marijuana etc..

To me more of the issues will be can we as a community, council etc. work together to solve issues like housing, parks, reasonable hours/behaviors at bars etc. To me it's called leadership and compromise, something that seems to be in short supply right now due to rising frustration levels...

      Delete
    3. 3:39: Good points. Actually I made an error. It is called a 5150. But the point remains. If the "authorities" can arrest you and put you in a psych. facility for any length of time, before you even committed a crime, doesn't that worry you? We do need to focus a lot more on mental healthcare, but there is no money at this time to do so. I will post about the woman, as soon as I go back to the source and find it.

    4. Not much of a doctor are you? You don't even understand the Welfare and Institutions Code Section 5150. If you think you can just pull someone off the streets and commit them because you disagree with their thoughts you maybe need some of the treatment offered at County Mental Health. If you as an alleged doctor are going to incite people at least get your facts straight as how Section 5150 is applied. Being an alleged doctor call your colleges and get some stats for how often that happens.

    5. was there a conspiracy in the nixon administration? Should the public have not talked about it because it wasn't helpful to talk about conspiracies?
Was there a conspiracy to lie to the American people about vietnam or weapons of mass destruction in Iraq? We shouldn't talk about such things. Nobody's life was impacted by those CONSPIRACIES.

  5. Now now now ... Let's not pick on Dr. Lorri. She tries hard.

  6. 6:19-I have been a psychologist for 30 years, so I think I am well versed in the 5150 code. If a patient comes into my office and I deem him or her a risk to self or others, I have the authority to call the police and have them sent to a psych. ward for 72 hours. I don't have the right to do this if someone disagrees with me. There is also a law called the Tarasoff Law, and since you seem so well informed perhaps you would like to explain that one. I also am a required reported of child abuse, no matter where I see it. If you don't like me, that's fine. However, only cowards trash people and don't sign their own names. Seems as if you fit into that category. And, 6:31, you don't need to protect me. I am quite capable of taking care of myself in this community. You can trash me when I run for City Council. Then have fun. I am another one of those academics you all love so much.

    1. A lot of academics are just State welfare recipients on the opposite side of the scale (being given taxpayer money). They profess to add value, but are just institutionalized windbags housed in asylums called Universities.

  8. Fidel has one position in common with Gus Vina. I read that Gus wanted to explore legalizing pot in Sacramento as a means of addressing budget issues.

Is there nothing that our City Manager will not do for money? Is our Council paying attention?

  9. Fidel sounds like a crack pot.

  10. From Fidel's Facebook page regarding the Pacific Station Bier Garden windows,

Though I'm not one for central planning, I think cannabis lounges would be far more courteous to the surrounding community. Alcohol damages organs & causes rowdiness & violence. Cannabis heals the organs, causes happiness & harmony, and no one disturbs nobody. Either way, I would not legislate morality nor restrict the ability of a business to open. Central planning is a form of tyranny.

    ReplyDelete
  11. And greed is in our DNA, so Fidel's view of "tyranny" would not work on Main St, at least not for your average resident. Developers/business owners yes, residents no.

    ReplyDelete

    1. So a business owner is a tyranist?? You are a loon.

      Delete
  12. Dr Lorri - how do you rate our current council individual and as a group?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Non 4:22, but a business owner is more likely to maximize profits than accommodate residents. Not so much a novel idea than likely scenario.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Accomadating residents/customers is the goal/function of business to then maximize profits.. Again you are a loon.

      Delete
    2. Not doing too well on the accommodating residents part, wouldn't you say? And calling folks names does not further the conversation, nor does it add credence to your point of view.

      Delete
    3. 11:44... What are you talking about?? How does any business that survives not accomidate residents?? I'll call whomever a loon simply because this city is so full of them it's an apt description.

    4. I'm talking about the whole downtown bar debacle. If you think it adds to your argument, feel free to name call, but don't confuse that with making a valid point. OAO.

    5. Do neighbors of Union Station and the Biergarden consider those businesses considerate of residents?

      Delete
  14. 5:02- Why do you ask how I rate the Council?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Since you like to opine on city matters, I thought you would like to opine on this. Why wouldn't you?

    ReplyDelete
  16. I didn't say I would not comment on the Council. I just wondered why you want me to? If it is to "trash" me, I have no interest in sharing my thoughts about the current council. If you are truly interested, I would be most happy to share my own thoughts.

  17. Yes, council reviews are always interesting.
    Fail: Gaspar
Sell-outs: Muir (soon to join above category)
Cop-outs: Barth (moving into categories above)
    Questionable: Shaffer and Kranz (ditto)

    Dump them all when possible.

  18. Sheriff is flying over encinitas right now with that inaudible p a system ..... all that can be made out is "call 911". Could someone donate a segway and bullhorn .... that would work way better!

    1. Sheriffs are looking for reason and common sense for the council and staff, unfortunately all they found was the weekly meeting of the KLCC. Quick call 911.

  20. help her stay at home and raise her children right. That last thing this country needs is more failure to launch and prison scum.

Come on Gaspar learn your priorities and give up the ego trip....

    3. Still better than Jerome, Danny, Bond, Christy, even Maggie in my opinion. Sorry Maggie folks, love the person, not so much the bulk of her voting record.

  22. I would like to vote for the two worst:

    1. Jerome Stocks- for his financial harm to the City's future by the financial atomic bombs of the 2005 35% pension spike for himself and every City Employee- and the Regional Sports Complex. Those to items insure either Encinitas go bankrupt, or develop like Newport Beach to pay for the huge costs for both.

Dan Dalager- for the same above and being the evil ones lap dog. Danny was not smart enough to be anything else, but boy will he talk your ear off.

The two are cherished by Sad Sac, Phil Cotton, Patrick Murphy, Larry Watt, and all the other $100,000+ retirees.... tax payers pay millions a year to the retirement PERS as the City's streets and other needs deteriorate into looking like the City of Oceanside.......

Oh, but we have a Regional Sports Park that clogs the shit out of the Cardiff neighborhood, isn't that great!

    Sigh.

I'm still laughing over that one. Let's see you have 3 council members that have never earned a nickel in the private sector .....and yet these three are needed to overhaul a fat bloated pension system that one member sucks $174K from yearly (plus free healthcare for life).

    5. Pretty sure Lisa worked in the private sector, so you're down to two, and Teresa may have worked in the private sector at one point as well. That leaves you with Muir.

    6. Both Barth abs Shaffer suck their income from the state. Ahhhhhnnnnnn you are wrong. Selling pizza or burgers as a teenager doesn't count as working in the private sector.

    7. Lisa worked at SAIC and Bendix, so the word "never" wouldn't apply there. Most recently, she worked at UCSD. You'll have to return to your job flipping burgers, or learn to google linkedin. I'd rather have Teresa who worked in the public sector, than an airhead like Gaspar who claims to work at her husbands company....
