Gaspar makes Supervisor runoff, favored to win in November

Kristin Gaspar easily beat Sam Abed to take second place and make the runoff against Supervisor Dave Roberts.

What's really got to have Gaspar backers excited is that Roberts pulled only 39% of the vote, while the two Republicans pulled a combined 61%.  With most Abed supporters likely to vote Gaspar in November, Gaspar is now the clear favorite to win the seat.

Full election results here.  Not a lot of surprises, or even other interesting races.

UPDATE: Carl DeMaio's analysis here.  One highlight is that Darrell Issa just barely came in ahead of a no-name Democrat.

  1. GOOD FOR Gaspar!

She is the best candidate. She will crush that little power hungry smug looking little Napoleon freak. November can not come soon enough. Congrats to Gaspar and Encinitas!!!

Staffers will have a sigh of relief as the little freak is sent back to his little pretend world in Solana Beach.

    Later Skater!!

  2. Once she becomes Supervisor, call her office daily to report pot holes. Her mailers showed pictures of pot holes, suggesting as Supervisor that would be her priority.

Only fair to hold her accountable.

  3. Favored by who? That's some fuzzy math you're using. As the incumbent, Roberts would still be considered the favorite.

    1. Not an incumbent who pulls only 39%.

Those are awful numbers for an incumbent indicating a very high likelihood of losing the runoff.

      Delete
    2. He only pulled 31% as a non-incumbent in 2012 in the primary and won in the general by 3%.

    3. Besides, as Encinitas residents, we know what a total zero Barbie is, let's not give her any run. I don't want some dope with a comms degree from ASU running a countywide district. Roberts is basically a Republican anyway, he switched parties when he made that personal announcement....

    4. 7:20,

Correct. And Gaspar pulled only 33-34% as a non-incumbent and will win a majority in November barring either a huge gaffe or Trump causing a Democratic landslide.

39% is abysmal for an incumbent. Very few incumbents who do that badly in an open primary go on to win the runoff.

      Delete
    5. Correction/clarification:

39% would be OK if Roberts lost a lot of votes to another Democrat or someone on his left, because those votes would likely come to him in November. But when you get only 39% and all the other votes are to your right, you're in deep trouble.

    6. Can you extrapolate the results of the June vote, with only 30,000 or so votes for the winner onto the General election, where the turnout will be much higher?

I'm not willing to make that leap.

Besides, there are still 300,000 provisional votes left to tally. Based on that, we're all jumping the gun.

  4. From the 2012 June election:

    Steve Danon .......... 33,093 votes 33.9%
    Dave Roberts .......... 30,718 votes 31.5%
    Carl Hilliard .......... 19,276 votes 19.8%
    Bryan M. Ziegler .......... 8,425 votes 8.6%
    Stephen Pate .......... 6,045 votes 6.2%

    2. Exactly, but he still came out tops in the general after coming 2nd in the primary.

I would imagine he will get a nice slate of endorsements this time as well. Roberts is essentially a Republican anyway.

I guess we'll have to wait until November to find out, but if anything, it means we will be free of Barbie in Encinitas....Good Riddance...

    3. Not such a republican when you look at his votes to protect the environment. Not even close.

    4. My dad was a Republican, and a big time environmentalist as well. The two are not mutually exclusive. Roberts switched parties when he came out...

  5. And BTW, if you live in Encinitas, you know Gaspar is the worst candidate. We can talk Roberts Ethics, but you can also talk Barbie's ethics, with the phantom non-profit, her alleged CFO title, and all the other pretend mantles of fame her team has created. Meanwhile, she is a do-nothing on the council, no brains, no guts, no leadership, except when it come to following the orders of development interests.

    3. She will turn off a lot of voters if she continues on the path of negative campaigning. Also, this is not a good year to be a republican. The party is on a downward spiral.

Roberts has accomplished a lot compared to GASpar. She doesn't have much experience. The purchase of Pacific View on her watch (even though she voted NO) was not a good thing.

More people voted in the Republican primary then ever before. By contrast democratic voters turnout this year was less than 2012 and 2008.

      Those are facts.

I don't think the Mexican Nationalist waving Mexican flags and brutally assaulting legal Americans will be able to suppress voters turnout in America like they have in Mexico.

  8. All this proves is that elections are bought. The PAC's want their puppet in office, then the county is opened up for development and special accomodations to their industry. Gaspar's camp will hammer the "character" issue, as it appeared to work. Robert's needs to hit the Gas on her inexperience, puffed up resume and her dealings on the city council. Her secret meetings on density bonus and such seem to mean 'character' is all in the eyes of the beholder.

  13. "One highlight is that Darrell Issa just barely came in ahead of a no-name Democrat." Boy, you can say that again. Maybe next time an actual prominent Democrat will run and we can defeat Issa. When I looked at the ballot I wondered who the heck was Applegate.

    ReplyDelete
  14. The spoiler Applegate was just enough. Divide and conquer folks, worked again. This was a highlight however. Issa's days are numbered just not as numbered as we could hope for at the present time.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Yes, Issa could lose, come November. There was only just over one percentage point between him and Applegate, and there won't be a third party running in the Fall, as there was for the primary.

Roberts is a good guy, in my opinion; but he seems to have shown poor judgment in the people he hired. He didn't get his day in Court because the County settled. Lawyers are so expensive; they are always the winners. It was worth it to the Board of Supervisors to settle, but that doesn't mean that Roberts was guilty of any civil wrongdoing. The DA said there was no criminal liability.

Personally, I think Kristin Gaspar could do a good job. She has local roots, and cares about our community. She seems willing to listen to, and actually consider, all sides of controversial issues, unlike past Council Members, like Jerome Stocks or Teresa Barth for that matter.

She did the right thing on the Cardiff Rail Trail decision; I was glad Mark Muir and Catherine Blakespear, and finally, Tony Kranz, did the same.

Gaspar and Muir were also right to attempt to require the City, through Gus Vina, as our negotiator, to hold down the purchase price for Pacific View. Because of Teresa Barth, Tony Kranz and LIsa Shaffer, Gaspar and Muir were outnumbered, and we were essentially robbed. We could have purchased the surplus school for far less had we, through our representatives and our city attorney, been more agressive about insisting that Baird and the Board of Trustees honor the Naylor Act.

Gaspar was also the only Council Member, under Stocks as former mayor, to question robbing so many City accounts, like the open space habitat fund and the Leucadia flooding fund, to pay for completion of the Sports Complex so-called "Community Park," as well as for a new lifeguard tower, now designated as a Marine Safety Facility. She questioned the plan to develop the beach with a parking garage for lifeguards, sitting on the bluff, and she questioned the expense of the new lifeguard tower. I am now wondering why there will be a space in the tower for the Sheriff's Department?

I don't like the idea of Moonlight Beach being occupied by the County Sheriff. They should stick to patrolling the streets. They could come to Moonlight when called by a private party or by the lifeguards on duty. Otherwise, it's just more "bikini patrol."

    ReplyDelete
  16. I agree. No sheriffs stationed at Moonlight or bikini patrol. Total waste of money and bad for the residents.

Have them focused on enforcement on the N. coast highway 101 including illegal straight pipes.

  17. When you look at the ISSA results from San Diego, those are only for the San Diego portion of the district. When you add in OC, he wins by 6% points.

I'm sure this is his worst showing, and points to changing demographics. And maybe, just maybe people are realizing what complete clown and crook ISSA is...

  18. A clarification regarding Lisa Rudloff. She did not resign, she was fired. To save face, the City let her resign, but if she didn't, she would still be gone. I haven't heard anything about what she and Kranz were up to. If anyone has that information, it would be interesting to know. She did write up 2 members of the Parks and Rec. Commission about 3 years ago, and I know those papers are still floating around City Hall. As far as Flores, he got a great new job and did not feel he could give the Planning Commission the time it deserved. He is from New Encinitas, so if anyone wants on the Planning Commisssion there is an open spot.

  21. Someone needs to duct tape Logan Jenkins mouth. He has already declared GASpar as the November winner. He is so caught up in the way she dresses and, of course, he loves her heels.

By the sound of it, these are the only qualifications she needs to win the Board seat. GASpar, in her super wonder woman fashion, said she got in the race because the Board meetings are held during the day and not at night, so that leaves time for her to tuck her kids in bed each night. How sweet. Where was she for them the last five years?
You would think she is the only woman on earth that had a job and children.

We will see what November brings. GASpar voted for Trump so he can carry on the Republican ideals that she holds so dear.
