City's hired experts: Leave the Madonna where it is!

SacBee:

The Los Angeles-based art conservation agency, Sculpture Conservation Studio, on Tuesday began testing ways to safely remove the mosaic. Its workers told reporters standing nearby that they saw a name under the colorful glass but didn't know if it belonged to the artist.

The agency concluded in an earlier report that there is no better spot for the Surfing Madonna than under the overpass, protected from the sun and rain. The artwork is stuck to the concrete wall with a strong epoxy glue.

"Its lifespan here may be longer than if put elsewhere," the agency said in its report to the city.

Bond says the city does not want to be a "Gestapo" [...]

No one called you "Gestapo." You're the Encinitas Taliban. Get it right.

  1. The bureaucratic overeaction to the placement of this art piece has been most of the problem. Grant it a 'retroactive' permit and clearly state that such permits are unlikely to be issued in the future (to deter other creations from appearing and upsetting the power apple cart). Maybe Bond can appear on the street and do his imitation of the St. Bernard puppy howl! (His analogy regarding the piece given on Fox News).

  2. I am amazed and delighted that Stocks and Bonds have taken a generous gift to our community, and converted it into a wedge issue that has managed to piss off 99% of Encinitas residents--save a self-proclaimed 'artist' who tapes himself being dribbled on, and a few people who might want to consider a dose of tolerance and a stab at being open-minded in the religion department.

I am offended that Stocks keeps telling US that we should be religiously offended. Mr. Stocks’ level of imagination is almost enviable, but if he were really in touch with how widely he is despised, I think that he would have trouble getting out of bed in the morning.

The other argument of the safety issue that revolves around traffic is just silly. Compared to driving in LA, Boston or New York, this Madonna gazing doesn't even register as an inconvenience, and I seriously doubt that people will be run over as has been predicted!
