Olivenhain, an east Encinitas community founded by German immigrants in the late 1880s, has canceled its annual Oktoberfest primarily due to a lack of volunteer labor. Is civic engagement dying in Encinitas?
[...]
[T]he community-based Town Council has found its hard-core volunteer labor pool has greatly diminished in recent years, mirroring national trends. The continuing evaporation of civic engagement and face-to-face social interaction were highlighted in the 2001 book, “Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community.”

Last year's event was huge! This is more of the UT's push to marginalize community character. What this tells me that there are not enough people to manage the party--which different than saying that nobody would show up.
ReplyDeleteAbout 60 people showed up for Jeff Murphy's talk at the Olivenhain Meeting Hall the same night that Tony Kranz gave a presentation at the library. There is plenty of community involvement in Olivenhain!

I think "[T]he community-based Town Council has found its hard-core volunteer labor pool has greatly diminished in recent years ..." is saying exactly that. You don't refer to an event's attendees as volunteers.
"This is more of the UT's push to marginalize community character." why would you say that? Barbara Henry is an honest reporter who has covered Encinitas for a number of years starting with the North County Times. Do people's minds automatically go into conspiracy mode when they come to this blog?
And no, I have no connection to the U-T other than being a subscriber.
Seems like everyone is too busy with their own lives. Kids take up 99.9 per cent of your time with their school and extra activities. There is no rest for the weary. Times were much easier many, many years ago.
ReplyDeleteWe are in them and organized sports are fucking stupid. Its all a part of the north county soft program.
DeleteIs the Olivenhain Oktoberfest different from the Encinitas Chamber's?
ReplyDeleteJust go get wacked downtown...
ReplyDeleteGetting whacked doesn't solve anything. It just makes them worse. One day you'll figure it out before it's too late.
