Covering civic issues, news, and the secret life of Encinitas
I hope this person is okay. Irrespective of your opinion on sharrows, lane diets, or the behavior of specific riders, hopefully we all acknowledge the fragility and value of each human life. I hope we remember while driving that each cyclist is someone's wife, someone's child, someone's daddy.
It is madness to allow cars and bicycles to use a busy highway inches from each other. There should be a fenced off lane for the bicycles. Period.
Our bike pod rides through Encinitas from K to Grandview on Third, Neptune and streets that connect those two. Why breathe exhaust fumes and court disaster by riding on 101 when there's a much more pleasant and safer alternative?
10:32,By the look of it, this rider was southbound. Neptune is one way northbound, and there are no through streets south west of 101.
Neptune is both ways for bikes. Sylvia, Fifth, A and Fourth connect Neptune to Third. Third has bike lanes on both sides to K.For variety, there are La Mesa and La Veta as alternatives to stretches of Neptune.Get to know the neighborhood!
12:18,Okay to ride the wrong way on a one way street? You sure about that?Think about it before you get defensive.
Is it OK to walk the "wrong" way on a one-way street?Of course it is!It's also OK to bike the "wrong" way on a one-way street. Our bike pod has done it hundreds of times.Look at the code.Do you actually live around here?
Actually, yes. I live around here. Looking at the code is a good idea. Let's do that. You seem to think I'm stupid, so help me understand what this means:21650.1. A bicycle operated on a roadway, or the shoulder of a highway, shall be operated in the same direction as vehicles are required to be driven upon the roadway."https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/?1dmy&urile=wcm:path:/dmv_content_en/dmv/pubs/vctop/vc/d11/c3/a1/21650.1
I do see bikes riding reverse on Neptune all the time, and my one request is to be careful. It's narrow in spots, and cars are coming the other way. I've had to stop more than once to let bikes go by. It also means you have to look both ways to make sure someone's not hauling ass in the other direction.I'm for sharing the road, but let's be careful. The one truth that sadly remains in all these bike discussions is that in bike vs. car, the car wins.
Bottom line - this is not a bike friendly area (minimal accomodations for safety).
No. Not the bike friendliest. But certainly better than it was 2 years ago. And there's still no evidence there was a car involved.
So, its been a few days and still nothing in the news about this accident that summoned so many emergency vehicles. Anyone know what happened?
Better tell the sheriff's deputies who drive Neptune that biking southbound is illegal cause I've seen them ignore southbound riders many times. While I was riding southbound sitting upright and hands free some time back, a deputy told me to put my hands on the handlebars. He didn't tell me that riding opposite the one-way motorized traffic was illegal.
11:51, Should have asked him how you are supposed to text?
A cop told me the same thing, 11:51, so I got handlebars for my unicycle.
While riding hands free southbound on Neptune, I stabilize by hanging on to the sky hook. A deputy told me that's OK.
How about the night rider with a headlighted helmet hauling ass southbound on Neptune on a stand-up tricycle behind two harnessed Dobermans?A sight to behold, but are he and his dogs illegally riding the wrong way on a one-way street?
It's OK. Those are seeing eye dogs.
