Undocumented driver plows into shoppers at Trader Joe's

Del Mar Times:
An unlicensed 87-year-old woman crashed her car into a Trader Joe’s store in Encinitas and injured four people on the afternoon of Jan. 26, authorities said.

A preliminary investigation found the woman, who was the sole occupant of a 2002 Honda Civic, backed her car into the store at 115 N. El Camino Real near the front door at about 2:38 p.m. and hit four female pedestrians, said Sgt. Scott Bligh of the San Diego Sheriff’s Department's North Coastal Station.

[...]

Three of the pedestrians were taken to local hospitals, while one was treated at the scene, Bligh said. No information was immediately available on any of their conditions, but authorities said each woman complained of pain and one was being treated for potential broken bones.

The driver, who had been cited in the past for prior moving violations and has never been licensed, was uninjured, Bligh said.

  1. It's unfortunate that there was no one in the drivers life willing to take her car away or otherwise restrict her ability to drive. Driving While Old can at times be more dangerous than DUI.

  2. Shocking that it was a senior citizen. Just shocking.

  3. Shouldn't your title read Unlicensed, not Undocumented? Undocumented isn't necessarily incorrect, but it is usually used to describe a person's immigration status.

    1. Agreed, should have read 'Illegal non-alien.'

  4. Generally the cops confiscate a vehicle if the driver is unlicensed. How did she come to have access to a vehicle, if previously cited? If she is not the registered owner, the owner will be liable for the ensuing injury lawsuits. Then there would be the issue whether there even is an insurance policy available for the vehicle.

  5. Clearly Trader Joe's and the owner of the mall are responsible for this. It's outrageous that they would place their front door near a parking area, an area with moving vehicles that could potentially cause harm.
This sounds like a case for an ambalnce ( yes I know I spelled it incorrectly) chasing lawyer. Know any of those in town?? Maybe he could tie low rent development into the numerous lawsuits..... hmmm can't think of any names. Someone help me, please...

  6. Why is this titled "Undocumented?" That makes it sound like the person is in this country illegally. The article doesn't use that word, it says "unlicensed."

How did you get "undocumented" from this?

    Words, like commas, matter.

  7. If the driver had been riding a bike, this accident wouldn't have happened.

  8. They removed the roundabout from in front of Trader Joe's, and now look what's happened.

  9. This is a repeat offender who commited a crime resulting in serious injuries.

Why are the Sherrifs and media withholding her name?

If the same set of facts were in play with a 24-year-old African American male, would they publish a name, a photo, and would the perp be in jail?

    Damned skippy.

  10. Build the wall and put this one on the list...American citizens want to know when illegal aliens are committing crimes. Let's not ever forget the murder of Kate Steinle last year in San Francisco.

    1. Yes, do take off running with the erroneous claim that this person was "undocumented" when she was actually "unlicensed."

I'm sure you were just waiting for this kind of thing to trumpet, facts be damned.

    3. 11:33 - so tough guy wants to put an 87 year old granny on the other side of the wall? How about just focusing on keeping her from driving again?

  11. The sheriff's deputies responded on bikes because their station is close by. The EMS response was on bikes with sidecars, so the paramedics could whisk the victims to Scripps before they bled out.

    1. Degher heard about the accident and response, immediately rode to TJ's on his bike and shot video that he'll show at the next council meeting to prove riding a bike is better than driving a car.

    2. This has nothing to do with Darius, who is one of our cooler citizens and a great musician as well.

Sad incident that maybe someone was driving when they shouldn't be. Let's face it, you're going to drive in So Cal until they ban you, because it's not like the bus runs to TJ's..

  13. It actually she had a NY driver's license, and they were checking to see if that was valid...

  14. Enter the trolls, one and all.

Darius deserves some scorn for his being a tool and completely ignoring the city's own EIR, just like Carris seems to be doing.

    Back on topic.

9:46am Clearly, really? Joes and the mall are responsible. What, what?

Slimy Mikey, is that you? In what universe should Trader Joes and the mall have any responsibility for an unlicensed or not driver? That would also apply to an alien. Roger is that you again?

A not funny at all observation is that, even though some of your group of haters are immigrants themselves, they have no observable humanity evident.

I suppose Trader Joes needs some impenetrable barriers installed to prevent a car from getting to the front doors. None of the other outlets in that mall have seen fit to install such protective devices. Why does Trader Joes cause you to ascribe blame onto them? Baseless, just as you are in this community.

Just the facts ma'am. And no alternative facts allowed. There is no such thing to a rational thinking mind. We appear to have a shortage of such around here and across the nation. What a long, strange trip we are on.

  18. 9:37pm, Not so sorry Mikey, again and again and again, not Lynn. Your defective mental condition is showing every time you bring up the obsessive compulsion of blaming an imaginary poster to be your object of derision.

    You miss every time.

Why come out of your den at all. Your supposed value is only your imagination running wild. Your reputation, as alway, precedes you. Wake up and get some professional help.
