Residents appeal Modern Times tasting room

Del Mar Times:
A group of residents is appealing the Encinitas planning commission's decision to approve a beer-tasting room downtown in July.

The Encinitas Citizens Committee (ECC) will go before the city council, tentatively set on Oct. 11, in hopes to overturn the commission's approval of the opening of the 150-seat Modern Times Beer tasting room, which is set to open at 470 South Coast Highway 101.

  1. Should have never been approved.

    1. Shirley Finch and other members of the hate group called the 'Encinitas Citizens Committee' have a deep hatred for American men and beer drinkers.
The 78-year old feminist carpet bagger tenant is looking for a legacy before she departs this earth and has chosen men (mostly white) and beer drinkers as her #1 target of her hatred, bigotry and intolerance.

Shirley comes to us from 'charming and quiet' Los Angeles and used to rent a luxurious view condo in the age-restricted community of High Country Villas (a community for 55 year olds and older) but somehow this feminist decided that High Country Villas was "too quiet" for her so she now rents an apartment in downtown Encinitas on 3rd Street. One must ask oneself, what time to 80-year old's typically go to bed and why are they concerned about what happens in retail-zoned areas of the city after midnight?

Shirley Finch went on the record against all of her downtown neighbors in Dec 2013 being the only one that stated that downtown conditions had not improved after the Encinitas Hospitality Association made laborious and costly measures to accommodate the relentless whining of downtown tenants and landlords in volunteering to improve trash, noise and alcohol over-serving issues in downtown Encinitas. But nothing is ever good enough for this feminist carpet bagger. Even after the Encinitas Hospitality Association hired security personnel, sent out publicity materials to all the surrounding homeowners and tenants, created a hotline for complaints, and greatly improved communication between downtown’s various bars and restaurants...it still wasn't enough for the feminist carpet bagger. The unconstitutional privacy-invading 'secret communication network' forced on the bars and restaurants allegedly helps prevent unruly bar patrons from getting served at other places after they’ve been turned away from one bar but talk about Orwellian and unconstitutional, WOW!

    1. "Growlers." Such a stupid word for an embarrassingly-large beer container.

      Insert eye roll.

    2. Holy sht, imagine being so out of touch with reality you think having a large beer container is something to be embarrassed about. Bet your life was fun!!

    3. I was in Washington state last week and came across a Growler Guys location. They have ~20 stores each with ~40 taps of assorted beers. They tap beer into growlers but can also can a big boy - 32 oz can (~$4). I opted for a Deschutes Fresh Squeezed IPA... yum.. As for Modern Times, sorry - I do not care for their product...Is there supposed to be some sort of Little Tramp tie-in? Growlers yes! Modern Times - maybe.. .

  3. Where will everyone park?? Oh that's right, they all arrive in those giant party buses.

    1. The party bus will wait with the engine idling on a nearby residential street. The driver can listen to loud music until 2 AM.

    2. Council already heard that complaint, what is it now? 4 years ago? They don't care. It's all about the revenue. Don't get in its way.

  5. I was shocked to learn that NO one supported Muir's item to OPPOSE legislation that would allow cities to let their bars stay open past 2am in the feaking morning!

  6. Can you little clueless crybabies just buy an island and move there so the rest of us with actual brain activity don't have to interact with you? Okay, thanks!

  7. 12:59pm Shirley Finch and the Concerned Citizens living downtown are a hate group?

You, obviously, are talking out of your rear end, and know little of what you are trolling about.

Anyone who has ever witnessed Shirley's heartfelt pleading before the council to mitigate the negative effects that the downtown bar scene has brought down upon the residents, can see that that here is hate whatsoever.

You are in complete denial of the facts. This group of residents has suffered through the neglect of the city and council.

The DAO will help to regulate the ongoing bad behavior, but beyond that, the saturation of alcohol serving businesses is beyond reason.

Our once special uniqueness has been sold out for the tax dollars that alcohol serving businesses bring it. The trade off is offensive to any longtime locals. Who is not, is profiting of this degradation.

Our community deserves better than to become another PB and these concerned citizens and their spokesman, Dennis Holz, have never shown an iota of hate toward any group, be they bar owners or restaurants who morph into bars after 10pm.

If our city council cannot agree that the much too late closing of 2am should be extended even later, they should all quit in disgrace.

It is this very element of 2am bars that is the problem. Midnight closing should become a penalizing factor for any future bad behavior, and would send the message that is being ignored due to little enforcement for the late night scene.

Those who cherish our community and are not looking to profit off of serving establishments business, hate no one.

Your stance comes from a different motivation. Degrading our community and directly profiting is resented by the majority of residents and rightly so.

Telling us we should move away in order to allow you to ruin the downtown further, is where the hate resides. Any attack on your profiting from degrading our downtown is the source of any hate that you have introduced into this thread.

  8. Longtime local here. Not offended one bit about our town finally getting a brewery. Still light years behind every other city in SD county, but it's at least progress.

  9. Another long time local weighing in.

Craft brew tasting rooms that close at 10 are not the problem.

People fighting this are taking things too far, and losing credibility with those of us who understand the real problem.

  10. Anyone who chooses to live downtown and doesn't drink should not have sort of voice vote opinion. Downtown has always been a gathering point over a drink. Watering holes galore. These radical Indian yoga gym rats need to look for greener pastures and cut down on the camel toes for crying out loud!
