Council Candidate debate thread

What are they saying?

    1. Congratulations, 7:20. You missed the last Kook pic though.
The night started off on a sour note for me. The League of Woman Voters lady told the candidates to remain seated when they spoke. Speakers should always stand if they are able to. Untill they're elected anyway and get to peer down upon the peasants.

  2. Blakespear wants residents to let their elected officials represent us. Shades of Shaffer.

She also says "We need to decide where to put over 1,000 affordable units.". Not "question he units and how to meet the number from existing stock," but "Where do we put them?". Good little foot soldier, that one.

    Lurch doesn't understand at-grade crossings.

Yeah, what is it about representative government Blakespear doesn't understand? Did I miss the last townhall meeting?

    2. Yeah, Lurch thought everyone wanted expensive underpasses. E for effort though and impressive history.

    4. Actually, the more I listen to Julie the more I want to vote for her and I will. She is compassionate, caring, and would do her best to represent the citizens of our city.

I am so turned off on Blakespear. She has this "smug" attitude and believes she deserves to be elected because she has lived here a long time.

Julie Graboi is our best choice for council.

  4. Lerch flip-flopped on lights at the hall park. He was against them in Cardiff and, I guess figuring he's now in old Encinitas, doesn't have to stay consistent.

Hey Brady, you never came back and clarified for us what went down with Zigler, an honest man

  6. Not sure what forum you all were attending, but Blakespear was the strongest candidate tonight and it wasn't even close. Graboi couldn't finish her answers because she was bogged down with minutiae, Lerchbacker is clueless. Blakespear clearly and concisely articulated her viewpoints. Tonight was surgical

    1. 9:28- I was there. Blakespear is not interested in representing local residents. She is like Shaffer Barth and KRanz, she thinks she knows best what residents need and swe all shut up

her answers for the most part were vague and verbose, except when she talked about letting government decide for us the future of the city

I heard from someone that at tthe Blakespear BBQ party she was talking about feeling like she was finally doing something on her own- I guess my problem with that is I would hope elected eladers would be doing for us- but sadly as we have seen they are in it for themselves- Blakespear seems to be the same

    2. There are several elements to a forum or debate. One is the substance of your answers, the other is how you deliver it. The other might that intagible of force and directness of message.

I could see Blakespeare having a better delivery, but would see Julie with more substance.

Most people here are letting their biases get in the way. Can anyone break down the forum in this manner?

      Delete
  7. Yeah, you weren't there, because the oft vague and verbose one was Graboi, who also never really articulated how she would get things done. She has a penchant for stating perceived flaws but not providing real fixes.

    ReplyDelete
  8. 9:53 yes, CB is rambling, vauge and verbose- hey this is a woman who when representing a client had to repeat over and over I am running for council, I am running for council, I am running for council-

With CB it's all about her (she even sounds like Lisa Liar)

With JB it's all about the community

  9. The problem with so many people on this page is that they already have preconceived notions about all the players, so much so they refuse to acknowledge that maybe their horse in the race wasn't on their game. Julie was locked in at Cardiff, mopped the floor with CB. Today was much different. But again, I don't expect to convince people who already have their minds made up otherwise

    ReplyDelete

    1. This seems fair in terms of how it might have gone down. In the end, most of the people at the forum have already made up their minds, because they're involved.

Too bad the people who could use an introduction to the candidates don't show up....

  10. Blakespear is so in the thrall of Barth and Shaffer that I could never vote for her. Even her "fear mongering" comment to Julie's response on Prop A end run by the city was straight out of Shaffer's mouth, verbatim. She has already shown that she will turn her mind over to Shaffer and Barth for her opinions. Do we really need a third mini me?

    1. Blakespear's comment at best seemed naive about the devious tactics some developers have used trying to get around laws.

    1. ".you're". Let's lay off Sheila. I have probably been the one on here the most advocating against voting for her, but I'm trying to keep it above board.

It's this kind of abuse that I don't think Sheila is going to be able to absorb. Last time was enough. She has done great things for our city in the past, and will continue to in the future, but I hope it's from outside city hall.

      Delete
    2. Thanks for your "reasonable" tone, but your message is the same. "This kind of abuse" sounds like it would escalate off this board into the Mike Andreen/David Meyer clown stalking of Maggie Houlihan. I don't know many who would or should "absorb" that level of idiocy. Why those two at the very least aren't peeking out from behind bars is beyond me.

Despite your tone, 9:59, I'd be very careful about implied threats and how folks react. It's a thin line to walk there.

      Delete
    3. Sorry, you're way off base. In 1994 there was no internet like there is today, or selfies, no cell phones. Technology has opened the door to a whole level of verbal abuse that wasn't possible twenty years ago. That was my point. I wat totally against the clown at the time and would be now. How that wasn't harrasment was beyond me, other than that public figures were involved.

There's no way I'm threatening anybody with anything. That was absolutely not what I'm going to. To put it in plain language, there's a lot of haters out there, we see it now. People have to get the same licks in day after day, Tony's temper, Teresa's pension. I mean time after time after time. It's the same crap over and over.

So imagine what that would be like after we saw the abuse laid down on Sheila last time. Magnify that times 20. That was my point. Is she phyically and mentally up to the dirt that would be slung her way this time? I would say no, and that's not a knock, but that's the way it is....

      Delete
    4. So you think you know the rule about public figures. There are limits; perhaps you didn't realize.

Care to expound on the dirt slung last time? Name names? If not, stop with the innuendo. Your dog ain't hunting.

      Delete
    5. You're barking up the wrong way. I don't endorse the harrasment of people in the public realm. I was opposing it, but I guess that escaped your limited intellect, Dr. Troll.

You mentioned it yourself, the guy's name is Mike Andreen, and it was called "Wirefire".

I don't think she's going to win, so it's not going to matter, but everyone on here and on every other public forum could excercise a lot more restraint in what they say, but that's the freedom of an anononymous forum.

I now return you to the regulary scheduled hatefest...

    7. This blog seems to have the most abusive, intolerant, childish, self-important and selfish electorate voicebox in the city, that just continues to lay the blame on everybody else who doesn't think, agree or vote lock, stock and barrel for them on every issue.

Just a bunch of lemmings running off a cliff for the last 25 years so go ahead and keep electing these (they're one of us this time) chosen few candidates who keep disappointing you over and over and hope for a different result.

    1. To be clear once and for all, it was Mike Andreen of the David Meyer posse that went after Sheila last time, is that clear enough? They did a whole smear job on Sheila so they could remove her as mayor because Bond wanted to be Mayor so he could run for state assembly or senate.

Were you here or do I need to dig up links. I'm telling you what happened while you're on some kind of which hunt. I supported Sheila in both her prior campaigns. I think we're on the same side here. My point is about how nasty it got.....

  16. Someone who knows a thing or two about Mrs. Cameron is former Encinitas City Manager Lauren Wasserman who was on the receiving-end of quite a bit of inappropriate behavior between an at-will employee, Wasserman and a seated Mayor of Encinitas, Mrs. Cameron. Wasserman kept all the phone message recordings from Mayor Mrs. Cameron at the time (Over a dozen) and used them to increase his 'golden' parachute when Christy Guerin became the 'third' vote to remove Wasserman when he tried to intervene in the Mayor's plans to return 'fees' to developers that she had befriended in Olivenhain named Thornburg. In light of not pursuing legal recourse for damages against the City for his treatment by the Mayor Mrs. Cameron, Wasserman agreed to receive a bump in his ultimate retirement that he will receive annually for the rest of his life.

There is a letter written by Wasserman published in today's Coast News. As for Andreen, he feels sorry for Mrs. Cameron and will not say a word against her to the press or publicly. Neither Wasserman, nor Andreen have forgotten any of Mrs. Cameron's actions or words 19 years ago. Nor have Mr. Holz, Mrs. Guerin, Mr. DuVivier or Mr. Bond. Ask them. While they may admire her chutzpa, none of them have spoken up for fear of returning to the chaos that reigned 19 years ago in city hall. Only in America.

There was also a question about him, a developer, and a house, but that was when he was with the county.

Kranz is too busy downing another tequila at the local bar and telling everyone how much of a big shot he is - he is the underdog. Odds are the developers got this one in the bag.

Perhaps if you could expand your addled mind and relegate your obsessive compulsions to trying a new tact you might be better off. We all sure would be.

      Andreen Andreen Andreen. OMG!

More likely Andreen has been hired by the Oceanside cops to get them a pay raise: he doesn't just work in Encinitas, studenti.

Other cities are in awe of how mean and childish Encinitas politics are: and for 20 years Sheila and Bob have set the tone. Geezer rock. Now, all these AARP crazies who have nothing better to do between receiving their monthly stipends from CalPers but sit around giant boxes of Costco wine at Laurie Michaels house and spin about perceived threats to Encinitas diluting and deluding themselves that they still matter and that only 'they' know the truth. Where's Kevin McCarthy stumbling down the center of 101 screaming "They're here!?" The whole idea that a truly demented locally 'historic' character like Sheila (Norma Bates?) has returned because her fringe group of fellow knitters have desperately run out of yarn: has led them to try and convince 'new' residents that only the Weird sisters from the opening scene in MacBeth can save a city that doesn't need saving.Toil and Trouble, girls. Sheila has demanded every city manager of Encinitas be fired since day one of incorporation, in fact, she tried to appoint herself onto the Search Committee when Phil Cotton vacated the manager's office.

Her contingent looks like a local Who's Who for 'most likely to have received electric-shock-therapy in the last 72 hours'. At least that would explain the hair. Hoodlink endorses? What took so long, trouble getting a ride home after getting released from the 51/50?

Jeezus! really, 10:50 pm, if you are truly looking for local's 'rap sheets', try one with the initials AA.

Won't be running for savior any time soon.

Neither pair will drain a significant number of votes from the other. Whatever number they do cross-drain will cancel each other out.

That race is between Graboi and Blakespear. Graboi represents good change, Blakespear represents more of what we've had for at least two years.

Then there's the mayoral race. Bawany and Fidel don't matter. The contenders are Cameron, Gaspar and Kranz. Of those three, Cameron is the best choice. We don't need two more years of the disaster we've had for the past two.

  28. Tony doesn't stand a chance this go around except for maybe helping his chances to survive in two years by throwing in his support to Sheila and Julie and creating a majority on council that will hold vina and sabine accountable and cementing an almost heroic selfless move before our community that would be legendary.

Kristen would be gone in a month, Tony's future prospects would be secured for however long he chose to remain on council or even a future mayorship.

This move would also serve to unite a fractured public that shouldn't have to be on opposite sides like we are now. This would isolate Kristen and her developer and real estate interests to a distant second place.

Just imagine the possibilities that this move could accomplish and uniting this community would be your gift that would keep on giving back to you for years to come.

That is not a solution - it's delusional and an act of desperation! MGJ is dead on with his analysis - the horse left the barn a long time ago. Whatever gains have been earned with the Prop A effort are now being squandered by infighting - who is more ideologically pure - does this sound familiar? Look - I've met all the major candidates, and none of them are really up to the task of running a city. All of them will screw up, all of them will over promise and under deliver, and none of them will be able to shake Vina from his post. Sabine, as a contractor, is another story, but even that initiative is too great a task for these neophytes. As the Most Honorable and Esteemed MGJ has pointed out - scrap this one and work towards 2016.
