Swap Meet!

Since many art center functions are specifically prohibited by Pacific View's zoning, our diligent council subcommittee has come up with another idea that will surely enhance the cultural and artistic life of Encinitas and add vibrancy to downtown: a swap meet!

  1. The most expensive swap meet in San Diego. Most of them are located on parking lots or in drive in movies. Couldn't we have found a cheaper way than spending $10 million for this one?

  2. Are you kidding me? Where is the parking going to be? I can only imagine what the residents in that area will think or do? Is this really what we paid 10 million for? I can go to the Seaside Bazar any Sat. or Sun. for this.

  3. I find it astounding that Mr. Klammer has lived in the area since 1884. Additionally, Mr. Peters feels that PV is a prim property - honestly, doesn't anyone proofread anymore?

  5. The broad category is "Outdoor Sales/Swap Meets." I have been to some very nice outdoor arts sales, and it seems entirely appropriate for an arts center. To suggest a traditional swap meet was being suggested is not entirely fair. For the record, $10M was way too much for this property. However, it raises the quality of discussion and dialog to be fair. No one suggested a swap meet as pictured.

    1. I disagree. What a total waste of money. Tony is on his way out. Fool!

An " Art Center" could have used space at the "Library ( otherwise known as the "homeless internet cafe"). Or the Community Center which has tons of property and existing building space available.

The $10 million for this property and the $3 million life guard tower are a sad joke on tax payers and puts Tony, Shaffer and Gaspar in the loser category of council members which includes $tock$.

Too bad they didn't make the short list which includes Holz and a few others.

      NEXT!

We need some fresh intelligent blood on Council - not old deadwood like Cameron.

    2. Get real. There's no space at the Library for an arts center. And 10 million was a steal. Time will tell, but you'll be barkin about sumthin else then....

  6. Why did the council subcommittee use the term "swap meet"?

Because they have to come up with whatever possible to use the $10 mil space.

    1. In the municipal code section 91-03, outdoor sales and swap meets are not separate; they are designated as one thing, "Outdoor Sales/Swap Meet." This matrix is important because it defines what sort of permit is needed to allow the particular activity. If you allow an activity not on the matrix (or another similar matrix), it would be problematic to determine what permit is needed. Here is a link to 91-03: http://archive.ci.encinitas.ca.us/weblink8/DocView.aspx?id=7730

I genuinely think there is nothing nefarious with this designation. There is far more to worry about regarding the $10M.

    2. I don't mind that designation, either. Outdoor sales are good, and they happen during Leucadia's Artwalk, as well.

  7. Since this is being paid for with taxed bonds to be able to include multiple kinds of revenue producing tenants, why is this use under question?

    1. The parking will overwhelm the neighborhood.

    2. Haha parking!

Silly oldster! Everyone lives downtown and rides a bike in Future Encinitas.

  9. At the end of the day, the local residents are going to wish it was sold to a developer to build like residential homes. The traffic is going to be outrageous!

    1. Sure glad I don't live in that neighborhood. The residents there are going to be very unhappy about all the traffic and the noise.

    1. Agreed. Graboi/Cameron are not the solution to this problem. The school should have been purchased, but not at that price. The Hall Property should have been purchased, and the price was reasonably fair. But, the cost to develop it was way out of line. We need people on council who are logical thinkers, with management and negotiating skills. They need some understanding of infrastructure development, planning, zoning, and a broad and open minded world view. There are plenty of such people in Encinitas, who seemingly have the sense not to run. Why would one run?? The first time they do anything the activists oppose, they are pilloried. There is zero tolerance for disagreement in this town.

  11. Homeless tent city on the property. Should take care of DB issues.

  12. Yeah… and the City can pay for all the tenants expenses. Like $3,000 each person.

  13. Like tipis! Return to the land! Blakespear can represent their interests. Plus it'll remove the bums from 7-11 to a more upscale location. That's social mobility!
