Costumes damage Cardiff Kook; artist wants decorators arrested

Union-Tribune today, page B-1:
The city will likely ask the artist -- Hemet resident Matthew Antichevich -- to do the repair work, [... Arts Administrator Jim] Gilliam said.

[...]

Never a fan of the continual redecoration of his piece or of the "Cardiff Kook" moniker, [...] Antichevich said Thursday the city wouldn't have a repair problem if decorating discontinued.

"Make a couple of arrests and then it will stop," he said. "It breaks my heart that they do that."

  1. I've never understood why the city allows people to constantly deface this statue. If people don't like it then just take it down and stop vandalizing it every day.

    1. Yeah, because happy birthday wishes "deface" and are "vandalizing" it. Right.

  2. It's a stupid, goofy looking abberation as it is. It can't be vandalized - only improved upon. The "artist" should be happy that he has the work.

  3. People are just having fun and interacting with public art. That thing would be invisible and ignored if it weren't for the shenanigans.

The "artist" needs to take himself a little less seriously. He's no Michelangelo, and the Kook is no David.

Make the repairs, cash the check, and STFU.

  4. The city will pay the artist to do the work AFTER they pay a crony 500K for a pre-work evaluation.

  5. The city is at fault here. They have condoned the vandalism that costs us all money in clean up and repair. I for one fall on the side of the artist. Arrest and prosecute people that vandalize the statue.

  6. The artist is the real Kook. He should be thankful that any attention is paid to his creation.

Ridicule is the sincerest form of flattery and without certain residents taking some liberties with his distortion of surfing, the fame of the Kook would not be so well known.

The Kooks creator would have continued to have been the butt of jokes for his ridiculous posing that belonged more on a dance stage than on any wave.

This Anthony person should be thanking those who have made his creation so famous. There was no Kook before certain creative people made it famous with its currently known moniker. This clueless artists name for this distortion of reality would have gotten little notice, and now it is known far and wide.

Lighten up, and bask in the glow of a fame that would have never happened without some liberties being taken with this dancer posed figure. Seriously folks, this image is a joke. Anthony, you are lucky that anyone sees fit to use your statue as a base for freedom of expression.

Your Kook is famous, and it is not because of your inept design. It is due to others who have used it and renamed it. Anthony, you are fortunate that anyone has bothered to make this figure into something that your talent as a sculptor never could.

  7. Public Art NEVER works and is most often a propaganda tool of Cultural Marxists. Go to the Encinitas Catholic Church at the Spanish Mass on Sunday with a translator and ask the natives what they think of that hippy-turned-yuppie 60-something narcissist who created the "Surfing Virgin De Guadaloupe" (only a Cultural Marxist or a serial liar would call her a Madonna in order to cover for their environmental fascist hippy artist friend....Encinitas is crawling with these Woodstock leftovers...caution MILF hunters...check for leftover STD's before entering). The environmental hit piece (or you can call it art), naturally positioned at the Cultural Marxist Headquarters of the Coast News, has ZERO regard for traditional Mexican values and customs and was obviously created to mimic the Patron Saint of Mexico. Art belongs in your home or in a gallery or museum, traditional Americans understand that nature alone is public art and along with some occasional landscape architecture is the only art we need to satisfy our souls but these City slickers who dwell in modern and degenerate art that come here from New York, Cleveland, San Francisco, LA, Chicago and Tel Aviv want to force this degenerate art into our lives. Want to see an example of this Modern and Degenerate Art, just go to the Botanical Garden where a juice director invites all of her degenerate friends to display their gawd awful sculptures...people go there to look at plants and trees not some narcissistic sociopath's idea of art. Same goes for architecture, the same city slickers force modernist designs into our public space but dominating and controlling architecture boards and decisions. REMEMBER that STATIST BIG BROTHER lifeguard tower they tried to force on us at Cardiff Beach (or were you too busy looking for white supremacists?), thank God a local there fought these Statist Modernists to have the tower resemble something soften and kinder than the holocaust-style of architecture that was almost forced on us. To proce my point, go find ONE public building designed in a traditional style, just one, within the last 20 years.. 1. 10:06 needs to see the anti fascism video the gov. put out in the 1940's. He reminds me of the star of the movie. Hopefully he'll take my advise after his dinosaur ride with jesus.

    2. Doubt he believe dinosaurs existed (no doubt believes they're a "city slicker" fiction), but the imagery is awesome.

      The 40s anti-fascism video definitely describes 10:06 to a T.

  9. How much will these repairs cost? Should the city replace the kook with public art that can be dressed up without causing damage?

    1. No public art needed, enjoy the beach and the mock orange plants as they are, no need for some city slickers man made sculpture to help us appreciate the natural beauty of the coast.

  12. Let's just replace it with another franchise or brewery. Or maybe a stockade with a real live kook for people to dress up, shame and take selfies with until they want to lay down on the tracks. It's just a big depraved pissing contest, right? Why not take it to the next level? It's an artist's interpretation, stop masturbating to it's innocence and find something better to do with your time. The sculpture itself does not make a statement about our community but the relentless ridicule and disrespect to the artist sure does. Grow up already.

    1. Oooohhhh - the social critic at large.

This is art appreciation - valid observations as to the intrinsic attributes of this esoteric interpretation. I think you are too Freudian and have exposed some of your own inner obsessions here.

    2. The only thing being exposed is how hypocritical the leadership is in this community. The kook is ridiculed because he looks effeminate and they not only allow it but encourage it, how inclusive! I noticed the 7-11 mural of immigrants storming our beach in a panga has been removed. Interesting how when this scene later played out in real life at Moonlight the whole boat was shot up by the Coast Guard. The community that wants to build more affordable housing in a city where the residents won't be able to afford to eat. They make changes just to make changes without any regard for the outcome because limousine libs only care about the change in their pockets.

      Delete
    3. You overly generalize. The affordable housing is a vague concept of equality, which is obviously strained , as even the middle class is disappearing. The building industry is the only recipient of benefits from this concept, as profits will be huge and affordability nil. Go complain at the door of DCM - I doubt that he is a "lib".

  13. City needs to take down that bad joke. Its ruining the view of the ocean with its blight.

Its not as bad as the Carlsbad Bars but almost. Take it down, and sell it.

  14. The damage is to the extending iron pieces at the base that are supposed to represent "white water". They are a bad abstraction to begin with - just eliminate them altogether. Don't waste any more money on this monstrosity.

Second of all, nice website. I like the part where you admit you don’t even live in Encinitas.

Please spend your time in your own town (Carlsbad), on your own issues.

  18. Last week, the city of San Diego passed reasonable regulations on cannabis that rejected the very same group of Reefer Madness idiots false claims we hear every week at our city council meetings.

Bob Ectar presented and addressed every possible concern when he presented his proposal before the council for consideration on using a very small part of his greenhouse operation to grow cannabis

These alarmists bring these same concerns up every week, completely ignoring the plans that Ectar thoroughly researched before ever coming before the council.

This is about legal adult use.

If these people have such strong concerns about kids using, and they do, and good for them, they should look more at the current state of parenting, and not at legally permitted adult use.

Trying to prevent legal adult use and fully regulated supply chains from seed to mature plants will never fix the lack of parenting. These people need to look inside themselves and do their jobs as responsible parents.

Wake up. Your kids apparently know better than you every time you claim the 80 year old lies about adult use of cannabis shown in Reefer Madness.

The side affects of Big Pharma and the opioid crises that they are profiting off of, so they can advertise constantly on various media is the problem. Many former opioid users have found relief by using cannabis and its lack of side affects. Just listen to Pharma's multiple warnings at the end of every commercial of disastrous side affects possible by using their highly recommended drugs. Cannabis has none of these.

This is about adult use. You alarmists should look to your own parenting skills and the lack thereof. Your demands before our council every week only show how truly uninformed you are.

Threatening council members to support your lies and demanding that they come out with their stance on the future should not be listened to. Council and the Mayor don't owe your group an answer on whatever their positions are and I hope they don't. Mark Muir has. The rest of council should not, before and until their ruling comes down.

    1. What a crock of shit on parenting:
"If these people have such strong concerns about kids using, and they do, and good for them, they should look more at the current state of parenting, and not at legally permitted adult use."

"Trying to prevent legal adult use and fully regulated supply chains from seed to mature plants will never fix the lack of parenting. These people need to look inside themselves and do their jobs as responsible parents."

Honey, we are both working and cannot supervise what Charlie is doing from 2:30pm to 6pm but he keeps running around with those boys who seem to be out causing trouble all the time. Honey we need to look inside ourselves and do something different to make sure our Charlie doesn't want to go down to the skate part and vape-smoke dope (vaporizer hides scent and smoke) in the bushes like all his pals or sneak out after 10pm to do the same.

Blaming it on parenting...spoken like a true THC-addicted trustafarian!

Our job as adults is to create a culture that benefits young and impressionable children and adults, you know, the next generation. It is unbelievably selfish comments like your above that show everyone why our culture has been so easily degraded and destroyed. You are an incredibly selfish person and I bet almost all of your daily, weekly, monthly decisions are about you and never about the greater good of society. I bet you surf too as there is no 'sport' more selfish than surfing. Good riddance you grown up spoiled child.

    2. I think we can all agree that 12:09 had a point until the argument went down the rabbit hole of "Parenting". Clearly 8:57 picked up on that, event though their point when down the same rabbit hole.....

Parenting is huge, but so is peer pressure. If we were to eradicate all mind altering substances from the earth parenting wouldn't be any easier. Drugs are only one aspect - what about a 5 year olds constant desire for self destruction in pursuit of outdoing their peers (climbing a tree, jumping off a roof, catching a snake) - we've all been through it!

I believe the real argument here is one of economics. Do we want our growers to stay in Encinitas or not? As a city we don't have many economic levers handy to influence economic activity other than zoning. Besides, who's taking the real risk here - the city, or the growers?
