City closes Rail Trail, 101 pedestrian zone

North Coast Current:
The Coastal Rail Trail and South Coast Highway 101 in Encinitas are closed to pedestrians effective Thursday, April 16, in observance of COVID-19 coronavirus restrictions, the city announced Wednesday evening.
If they crowd exercisers into smaller and smaller remaining open spaces, maybe we'll have more sympathy for people in high-density places like New York City.

  1. Sooo...they have closed a sidewalk? Pretty soon people will have had a gut full of this nonsense and simply go out and do what they do. There are not enough law enforcement officers to stop us and I respect law enforcement but enough is enough.
Closing the beach was a odd attempt to control the uncontrollable. Now this?

  2. Closing the beach was a knee jerk reaction with no real benefit.

  3. Here is a perfect example of why its so great that Encinitas gots rid of Brust. She is the one that made this call and the shitty Mayor backs her up. Both are really illogical with no common sense and both are really bad for Encinitas's future. Thank God Brust is going and I can't wait for the day I here the same about Blakespear!

Exercise in the outdoors and Sun on the skin are good for your immune system and Brust and Blakespear are bad for Encinitas citizen's health and quality of life.

  4. I have no sympathy for the people in NY city. They made a choice to live on top of one another and then brag about living in that ghetto. This is exactly what the whackos in Sacramento are trying to force down the throats of Californians with their low income multi story ghettos. Beware the enemy of America.
And now the frothing at the mouth nut case newsom is giving illegals a check from tax payers. He hates his own country.

  5. I ran on the 101 this morning just went around the barrier. So we are now just going to push pedestrians onto the 101 into the bike lane as I saw several people running in the bike lane. The Rail Trail is a sidewalk - where do you suggest the people across the street walk on the road that is safe - NOT. Im so pissed off about this, at some point when are people going to wake up and see that their civil liberties are being taken away.

    1. It's a pandemic, in case you haven't noticed. Since it is unprecedented in our lifetimes, authorities are implementing emergency restrictions based on best guess assumptions. Nothing will be perfect, but the contagious nature of this virus makes the concept of social distancing logical. The relatively minor inconvenience of not being able to do your daily jog pales in comparison to the greater good of attempting to contain the contagen. I think you need to see the bigger picture and quit whining about your personal inconveniences.

    3. I saw a few Mom's pushing strollers on San Elijo this morning - thats really safe. So I if I live on San Elijo I walk out of my house and what ?? walk in the road because I'm not allowed to walk on the sidewalk in front of my house.

    1. HAHAHAHA you funny, 9:15. Don't be so lazy, call the city and ask how many people have been driving them nuts to close it.

The covid trail should have been closed weeks ago. Get over it.

  13. If you've gone by the rail trail or the walkway south of Swami's during the middle of the day, you have seen the swarms of people walking, biking, scootering and not maintaining 6 feet of distance. There's also people hanging out in beach chairs, on their tailgates, etc. It's unfortunate that locals can't use these great resources, but just like during summer, everyone has the same idea, and that's to go to the beach. The good news is, outside of the rail trail, there are plenty of open spots to walk in Encinitas....

  14. Other countries who had real leadership and acted smartly are now opening their economic activity without sacrificing lives.

Meanwhile here in the good ‘ole US of A, we had poor leadership that predicted the virus would magically disappear in April and delayed for two months on social distancing measures, fixing testing, and solving shortages of PPE and medical equipment.

As a result, we have BOTH the highest cost in terms of human life AND the highest cost in economic terms. We have triple the Coronavirus spread of the #2 country, which means a longer tail on the decline, longer lockdowns, and much more economic pain.

We’ve coddled the ignorant into such a sense of entitlement that they think they are special.

And so, while smart countries listened to the experts and have less death and reopening economies right now, America is defining how not to do things. Our stupid leader and stupid followers are laying the groundwork for both the body count, and the bank account to experience a shitshow of epic proportions. We are now in the position where the pendulum will swing between trying to save lives, and trying to save the economy. But that pendulum swing will assure that we save neither.

You think it’s bad now, just wait.

It’s a shame. Didn’t have to be this way. Most developed nations are managing fine. It’s just a terrible time to experiment with kakistocracy.

I look forward to seeing what replaces America after the fall. Life will go on.

  15. Here we go again 10:31 - Orange man bad is the cause of everything. You should self reflect and stop spreading misinformation you worthless moron.

    Abstract

Background: By early April 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic had infected nearly one million people and had spread to nearly all countries worldwide. It is essential to understand where and how SARS-CoV-2 is transmitted. Methods: Case reports were extracted from the local Municipal Health Commissions of 320 prefectural cities (municipalities) in China, not including Hubei province, between 4 January and 11 February 2020. We identified all outbreaks involving three or more cases and reviewed the major characteristics of the enclosed spaces in which the outbreaks were reported and associated indoor environmental issues. Results: Three hundred and eighteen outbreaks with three or more cases were identified, involving 1245 confirmed cases in 120 prefectural cities. We divided the venues in which the outbreaks occurred into six categories: homes, transport, food, entertainment, shopping, and miscellaneous. Among the identified outbreaks, 53.8% involved three cases, 26.4% involved four cases, and only 1.6% involved ten or more cases. Home outbreaks were the dominant category (254 of 318 outbreaks; 79.9%), followed by transport (108; 34.0%; note that many outbreaks involved more than one venue category). Most home outbreaks involved three to five cases. We identified only a single outbreak in an outdoor environment, which involved two cases. Conclusions: All identified outbreaks of three or more cases occurred in an indoor environment, which confirms that sharing indoor space is a major SARS-CoV-2 infection risk.

  16. This is all because east county dipshits from Vista and San Marcos kept coming to the beach to walk the trail and the 101. We need to build a wall and keep them out.

  17. Amazing all the sheeple clamoring to be sheep on the covid trail. Why do you sheeple need to be so close to each other? Do you run/walk better on the covid trail concrete better than the street concrete? Do your neighbors hate you so you have to go to the covid trail? No one is saying you cant go out, they are just saying to stop being a herd animal. You go can do it, no one is going to get you if you walk alone through the neighborhood. Don't be scared.

    1. Agreed! The last time I went out on the rail trail, it was a few weeks ago. I waited until pretty late on a Friday night, because I didn't want to be around anyone, maybe 11:30. There weren't too many people around, but there was this one guy, lurking around the bushes. He called over to me, and against my better judgment, I went over to see what he was doing. I thought he might be in need of help. To my surprise, he blew me, right there, just off the path in the bushes, while people were walking by, not wearing masks. WAKE UP PEOPLE! If you are going to walk the trail, you need to wear a mask, and now that so many people couldn't follow the rules, I can't go back this Friday.

  18. Many thousands of residents are disappointed at the temporary closing of the rail trail, because it is a beloved and outstanding addition to our community.

But it’s important to remember that if Julie Thunder had been in power, the Rail Trail would be effectively closed permanently, because it wouldn’t have happened at all.

If you miss the Rail Trail, don’t vote for the BIA member, the person who obnoxiously shouts down her neighbors and claims to speak for everyone, the concrete queen development profiteer, the one who stole the good names of over 700 folks who signed a petition who did not agree to have their name used to endorse a homogenous slate of right wing nut jobs.

If you miss the rail trail, don’t vote for Thunder.

    1. Some neighbors deserve to be shouted down due to their stupidity.

Just think - if the rail trail did not get paved over we would not be having this conversation---

F the rail trail. In fact - lets just demo it and open the 101 and the beaches. Simple solution.

Ergo- you are one of the stupid.

      2020= Generation of stupid
