Encinitas-raised NFL kicker Tom Dempsey dies of Coronavirus

NFL.com:
Sixty-three yards from history with two seconds remaining on the clock, Tom Dempsey took on one of the NFL's most enduring moments straight on.

Instantly recognizable as his right foot -- which he kicked with -- was without toes and enclosed in a modified shoe, Dempsey still employed the straight-toe style of kicking in the autumn of 1970.

With all his might, Dempsey took nary a pair of slight steps and booted a hopeful game-winner that fluttered to the ground 63 memorable yards later. On Nov. 8, 1970, Dempsey lifted a then-NFL record 63-yard field goal that sent the New Orleans Saints to a 19-17 triumph over the Detroit Lions and became an NFL moment that's endured for generations.

Saturday night, at the age of 73, Dempsey died after contracting the novel coronavirus, the Saints announced.

Encinitas Advocate 2016:
Encinitas’ hometown hero Tom Dempsey was inducted into the San Dieguito High School Academy Hall of Fame on Friday, Oct. 14 with a ceremony at the school’s bell tower.

Dempsey, who graduated San Dieguito in 1964, is a former NFL kicker who, in 1970, set the record for the longest field goal in the league with a 63-yarder as a New Orleans Saint. The mark stood for 43 years until it was finally broken, by one yard, in 2013.
Dempsey was in a nursing home that was hit hard by the virus.

  1. He had dementia which often times takes people out with a virus. Like the common flu or even a sever cold.

  3. This overblown issue will not even be a blip in the population curve. I'd hate to see what chaos would erupt in a real crisis.

98% percent of the fatalities are those with weakened immune systems or really old people. Its a part of the evolution process. Thin out the herd. Lord knows there are enough humans on earth and I thought we were looking for a more sustainable existence moving forward. Many people who are susceptible are obese and have type 2 diabetes. Did you ever think many people should address their overall health and get out in the sunshine and walk or some kind of exercise. Many look like they are already killing themselves daily by not exercising.

The option to try and close down the world every time there is a new virus is not good for public health. The overall effect due to the tanked economy - suicide, stress, drinking, non exercise, lack of sleep, will surely have a much bigger negative impact on public health than this virus.

The so called world leaders blew it with this one and did not look at the big picture common sense alternatives. This is a sad lesson to learn the hard way. I give them an F for creating this self imposed depression and all the negativity associated with this depression.

  5. Dempsey should have been banned from the NFL since he didn't have any ties! He literally kicked with the equivalent of a leather block (perfect square) no wonder the 'record' held for so many years. Look it up fools!
