City storm drain floods homes on Nardo

NBC 7:
At a time when staying home is the safest place to be, several Encinitas families are stuck finding a new place to live.

On Friday afternoon, a storm drain on Nardo Road and Santa Fe Drive overflowed, sending hundreds of gallons of water pouring into people's homes.
That doesn't look like just hundreds of gallons. News video at the link.

A commenter at Encinitas Votes:
I’m so disheartened by the way the city has treated its own citizens. So many people in our neighborhood don’t have the financial ability to move out and restore their homes. Instead, people are having to live in wet, contaminated homes that will soon turn to mold. A storm drain pumping water with enough force and volume to create a river large enough to flood 20 homes in 20 minutes is not an act of God, that is an act of poor planning. Just up the street, 13 multi-million dollar homes went in on what used to be 5 acres of farmland. The land that used to absorb a significant amount of rainwater was paved over, creating more pressure on the drainage system. While the city receives all the benefits from the tax revenue of these homes, we are all paying the cost of poor planning and the lack of infrastructure updates to support these developments.

  1. Create an assessment district and pay for it! Don't make others who brought their homes in non-flooding area pay for your decision to get a good deal on property near the beach - did you ever wonder how you got it so cheap?

    ReplyDelete
  2. And 8:38 what do you say when the city approves too much hardscape because they're beholden to the BIA? Folks who once did not have flooding issues now do because "staff" recommends overdevelopment and council falls into line for the BIA.

All flooding areas were not always that way.

    1. 10:36, Immediately burn down your own house. Its construction made your neighbors more likely to experience flooding.

Do it now. Practice what you preach.

    2. Let's pull our heads out for a minute and discuss the issue at hand, ie the fact that those houses are apparently below grade and likely to flood in a rate situation where we got 4 inches of rain in a 24 hour period. Those houses were probably all built when the city was still county. Everyone on here is going on and on about situations that don't apply here, except the fact that the storm drain capacity may not be sufficient in that area. The entirety of Southern California has an issue with too much hardscape and runoff. Building is what builders do. Until this town is completely built out, and we're getting close, the builders will continue to hold sway. You can't stop building where it's allowed, no matter who's on the council....

    3. Those houses were there and just fine until the city redid the street and the high school got a make over.

  3. 10:36 if your honest, you and your neighbors probably voted for our Mayor and City Council. This Mayor and City Council has pushed for more development than any other previous council. You have better chance at changing the council than have this council do anything. But, I know you'll sit on your ass and just complain! It may be easier to just sell your house and more to a dryer area.

The Thunder family business is called Thunder Jones Concrete Paradise Paving Company (or something).

In California, I believe interest in the business is marital property equally shared unless there is a prenup.

That means Julie herself has a direct profit motive to destroy Encinitas. Her family business is a dues-paying member of the BIA, and any money she’s given or loaned to her own campaign is dirty concrete money from reaped from the destruction of our community.

Here’s the Thunder Jones Concrete Paradise Paving Company in action in Encinitas:

  10. Currently the stats show 137 deaths/million citizens for Sweden and 112 deaths/million citizens in the USA which is relatively the same. Yet Sweden kept living and in fact took the opportunity to educate its citizens on how to strengthen their immune systems. Unlike in Encinitas, where the Mayor shuts down the beach, shuts down all walking and exercising along the coast, shut down other major exercise walking pathways and tells everyone to stay indoors and spend more time watching video screens.

By not shutting down their society, Sweden is much further along with the curve then the USA..... USAs will go on longer and with a much higher death count because their policies created massive stress for its citizens which will reflect in the nation health statistics for years to come.

Way to go Developer's Whore. Way to show you are a minion and can not use your brain to make good decisions for Encinitas. The values you promote include:

    1. High density like Huntington Beach and down town LA (bad for virus spread).

    2. More transit where people need to wait longer, its more expensive and you get to pick up all the other passengers diseases. (bad for virus spreading)

    3. Developer's Whore (DW) supports inviting and paying for the world's homeless to come and live along Encinitas coastline for free and we citizens will bear all the costs including major reductions in our quality of life.

    4. DW does not have common sense and approve things all the time that are bad for Encinitas.

I sold my Leucadia home 18 months ago b/c the City was planning to put a 273 unit - 3 story apartment building in the field behind my house to meet the State housing criteria and the ingress/egress in my rural neighborhood would be a nightmare if this were to happen. Anyway, I get super frustrated driving around Encinitas and seeing 5000 SF mega mansions taking up the remaining land (Lake/Birmingham). Am I crazy or WTH!! If we have a housing shortage, why not do an affordable tiny home village with 1000 SF homes that can accomodate more families with modest incomes...

      Delete
    2. Real science. You don't start talking about spread of viruses without proof. That is what he was clearly pointing out. Its obvious by the super low fatality rate world wide and mostly from a very small vulnerable group of over 80 with compromised immune system.

The whole shut down was totally not needed. That is what the numbers show.

Developer's Whore and the County got it wrong big time and hurt the public. They need to own up and apologize.

      Delete
    3. Mcdemott is CEO of a drug company that is vested in treatments for covid that may not be needed. The more people that get sick, the more money he makes. Will probably lose money because of the effectiveness of social distancing. The number show the shut down has worked, that is a fact.

Real easy to find the data that shows cities that did not shut down have suffered more.

The response sucked at every level i agree. The places that did not shut down and that have faired well had a plan and executed it. We have spent trillions and are no closer to isolating and treating cases as they pop up in hot spots. Our one effective tool is social distancing.

    4. The whole Kim Prather argument is irrelevant. The beaches need to be shut to enforce social distancing, and this includes surfing. Pretty simple.

    5. 3:27- Show us the numbers that COVID 19 is any more deadly than the typical annual virus. Its not from everything I have seen world wide.

The smart way forward would have been in February or March take hundreds of random samples to determine what % of the population were already expose to the virus before deteriming the need for the shut down.

It seems to me the evidence is showing the virus has already washed through SD and many other areas throughout the county. Recent testing in Mass proved 1/3 people already test positive for antibodies.

Why would they do similar testing here instead of keeping everyone on lock down?

She tells people to stay inside and watch more videos and TV, and shuts down public walkways and the beach which promote healthy lifestyles and increasing the public's immune systems. Wow. Again, what ever she touches turns to shit. What a caring Mayor would do is promote the public to get out and exercise and promote more walking and bicycling areas to help everyones immune systems.

    - Be more like Sweden and less like LA.
    - Create more space for human based activity (walking, bicycling, swimming, playing, exercising, surfing) outdoors by reducing the car travel lanes to one in each direction and giving the extra space including the parking lane to the pedestrians and bicyclists.

    - We do not need the car lanes because the traffic is so light from everyone staying at home.

But no our Mayor sucks and I will be voting for anyone but DW in the next election.

This is really good for Public Health, Dumbass. Do you think any of these people will suffer stress and related health issues?

The consensus of 57 economists surveyed this month by The Wall Street Journal is that 14.4 million jobs will be lost in the coming months, and the unemployment rate will rise to a record 13% in June, from a 50-year low of 3.5% in February. Already nearly 17 million Americans have sought unemployment benefits in the past three weeks, dwarfing any period of mass layoffs recorded since World War II.

  21. While I agree we need a new majority on our city council and will support those who are challenging the three that need to be sent packing, referring to Swedens choice to not sequester has shown they are the most impacted nation and has their neighbors worrying about their choice to not follow best practices in slowing the spread.

Anyone claiming Sweden has a better way to deal with this world wide pandemic should not be listened to. Wake the f up. It is up to each of our owns responsibility to do what we can to lower the transmission rates.

The idiocy of denying how easy this virus has spread and calling for opening up our beaches and parks and trails without first having testing for 300 million and following that up with a vaccine for over 300 million is as irresponsible as it comes.

Some of these callers for opening up are obviously not in the age range that is most threatened. Their selfie, selfish uninformed perspective needs to be called out for what it is. Choosing to be ignorant is no excuse.

I would never rely upon our daily disgracer in chief for any advice on anything, much less for our health concerns during a pandemic. This includes some locals around here calling for opening up our beaches and trails until we know how far this virus has spread.

Without testing everyone, nothing should be opened up. There are already signs indicating this virus can come back after seeming to be over the peak due to relaxing some well known efforts to stem the spread.

Sweden? Sweden is no example to be followed. Whoever is promoting their example should be made to sit next to a covid19 patient.

  23. 10:40am .Thank you for the correction on who is responsible for the posts on opening up our coast before extensive testing is done.

We all need to be together as we navigate this world wide health crisis.

Opening up our coastline or rail trail before testing is done is a recipe for disaster.

If only those calling for relaxing the stay at home suggestions could be personally held responsible, these few might rethink their positions.

Michael Curran ? and Armstrong ? especially for promoting an irresponsible way forward while we all seek the same result. Less spreading will require less time having to close our local natural resources that we all treasure and why we love this community we have chosen to reside in.
