Natives getting restless now

Mutiny in the air!
Encinitas residents are planning to gather at City Hall Wednesday at 5 p.m. to protest Mark Muir’s recent appointment to City Council. Muir, who will step down from his post as Fire Chief before being sworn into office Wednesday night, was appointed to fill Maggie Houlihan’s seat last week.

According to a written statement released on behalf of the group by Steve Meiche, one of the organizers, some residents are calling for Muir to step down due to what they claim are “instances of political favoritism, cronyism, conflict of interest and ethical policy violations.”

Even in laid-back Encinitas, you can only push people so far. The arrogant and brazen appointment of political crony Mark Muir could be what finally rousts the voters and runs the council good old boys out of town.

  1. This will do little to no good as Muir will be sworn in directly after he resigns as fire chief, thereby circumventing the planned protest.

Occupy city hall if you want to stop Muir and his crony buddies from stealing your wallets.

  2. Keep it up.

The more you protest against Mark Muir, the more his name gets out there and the better chance he has of getting elected in 2012.

It's called political science for a reason.

Go protesters! Please spell his name LARGE on your signs.

  3. Let the people know the outrageous pension obligations that have and are accruing for the city taxpayers; Muir being high on the list. His past transgressions as Fire Chief need to be explored more too; plus his allegiance to special interests - political science is getting the truth out there.

  4. 6:26,

Have another hit on the crack pipe. "Name recognition" is not everything in politics, especially when that recognition is an association with corruption.

Dick Cheney and Anthony Weiner have GREAT name recognition.

  8. Hmmm, why would a man at the top of his profession leave a $200K job to take a $20K job??
    What's in it for him??
    I wonder......

  9. Isn't it ironic that the very man who stood responsible and took action in turning the 100 year fire back away from Encinitas in 2007 is being demonized by those who have repeatedly lost at the ballot box?

The people accusing Muir are guilty of far more ethical lapses than those alleged against Muir.

That is what is so funny to people who actually know all the characters involved. Pity the reporters don't do their homework, but what do you expect for $25 per story, eh, Wehtahduh?

Meiche is best known as a Youtube video artist who specializes in close-ups of fresh dog waste that he posts online.

He blames Muir because Encinitas Fire repeatedly had openings that he felt should have been his, but which he repeatedly was turned down from.

    Wonder why?

Make sure those MUIR signs are BIG!

  10. I see the Muir as "hero" myth is already being pitched (phoney media personna)- now he saved Encinitas from the 100 year fire - absurd! He is part of the power cliche that is slicing up and selling Encinitas off to the highest bidders. He has a pension that is beyond rationality because those in power think only of the rewards in it for themselves. His allegiances are clear and the kick-backs obvious - Muir is a crony. The only way he could get into office is by the corrupt appointment that is taking place. The 'super majority' do not represent the community interests.

  11. I must have missed the part where the fire burned right past the Rancho Santa Fe golf course and the San Dieguito Reservoir and was turned back at the city limit by the heroic Muir.

Apparently, the U-T missed that part too.

  12. The hero myth of Muir is absurd. What stopped the 2007 fire was not any heroic measures of Mark Muir, but a shift in the Santa Ana winds. Anyone with experience in Southern California knows that when the dry winds are howling, the fire is unstoppable and firemen can only get out of the way for their own safety.

Remember the La Costa fire? It jumped Rancho Santa Fe Road and threatened the heart of La Costa. Hundreds of home were burned. But the winds calmed, and the fire was quickly halted. The 2007 fire was never at this level.

  13. He's a fat millionaire bureaucrat. I don't know anyone who thinks he's ever done anything heroic or extraordinary.

Lots of firefighters are real heroes. Muir is not.

  15. Muir stopped the fire when his jumbo super-sized McDonald's soda spilled.
