Cardiff man dies in Carlsbad helicopter crash

The county Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the two men killed in a helicopter crash at McClellan-Palomar Airport late Wednesday afternoon as 65-year-old pilot Bruce Allen Erickson of Rancho Santa Fe and 60- year-old passenger Wayne Frank Lewis of Cardiff-by-the-Sea. The helicopter crashed and caught fire as the pair were practicing landings.
Lewis was a realtor at Berkshire Hathaway, an aviation enthusiast and cyclist.

  3. Another silver lining story of adventurous older folks who died doing what they loved.

    I hope I have the guts to take up helicopter flying at 65.

    For every senior who dies this way, there are hundreds who become sedentary and afraid, who succumb to diseases years after they really stopped living.

    Those sad deaths don't make the news.

    I hope the families can celebrate that their loved ones died while living, instead of waiting for death.

  4. FAA reports this incident as pilot error. It was a recently purchased chopper and the fatal incident occurred the first time the owner flew it unassisted by a more experienced instructor. He attempted to place the craft on a helipad and could not center its skids. Then, after multiple unsuccessful attempts, the craft tipped over and disintegrated.
