We love Encinitas the way it is

A love letter from Aspen:
But the cool thing about Encinitas is that not much has changed. Surf culture is relatively timeless in terms of its dress, daily rhythms and attitude. All of my favorite haunts are still there. I got to have my grilled-fish taco platter at Las Olas, Curry Panang at Siamese Basil, the Ahi Wrap at Ki’s, and a soy latte and gluten-free muffin at the Pannikin in Leucadia. I even took Ryan into Cardiff Seaside Market not to grocery shop but to browse, to see the sesame-encrusted seared ahi in the gourmet deli, the fresh flowers, the beautiful vegetables and the amazing baked goods that somehow taste good even though they’re this-free and that-free.

  1. Did you stop by the Soylent Green Estates called Pacific Station?? Barth says this is the wave of the future. And don't forget one last view of Pacific View - soon to be Condo Ridge! Take a drive up by Quail Gardens (San Diego Gardens) say goodbye to open space....
    I need a drink - I'm going downtown.....*******hic*******

  2. I love the letter. I feel many of the same things the writer does. Not everything is going to be exactly the same, no matter where one lives, and with change comes uncertainty and sometimes fear. I will admit, I am not keen on some of the newer things coming down the pipeline, but I do know this is the best place I have ever lived, bar none.

Try visiting New Castle, Indiana and eating right. I think better food choice consciousness anywhere does raise the bar for of people's quality of life - so hat's off to other cities with orgainic juice bars! They were sent to me by my mother so if I wanted to forward them to you, and you would like to see them, can you email me @lgreene98@aol.com. Then I can forward them onto you. I also forwarded them to WcV. They are truly awesome and a piece of history which I think you both will enjoy. Wc-Feel free to post any of them on your blog. I now many bloggers would love them, and put them in a better mood. And, no, I am not the City's spin doctor either. And the pics are not of Encinitas. So you could all enjoy them. They stem from 1800's forward.

    6. PS looks even worse from the east side, from the train. Planning KNEW or should have known there would be inadequate parking, even before it ever should become "fully occupied," which is different than being "sold out."

PS is another case of special interests "getting in good" with Council, getting exactly what they wanted, including tax "increments" to help them through tough times, before Whole Foods moved in.

I don't think DeWald had to pay the kind of in-lieu affordable housing fees that Moonlight Lofts did, which mixed use development ended up going bankrupt.

  8. No. The corrupt 4 that supported it were Stocks leading the charge, Guerin (ex sherif pension receiver and wife of public pension receiver), Maggie (RIP) and Dalablabber (dumber than dirt)……. Jim Bond knew how outrageous it was and voted NO (like a responsible council person looking out for the public's best interest). He didn't rubber stamp the City Manager's request (who of course also benefited front the 35% increase…… you need to get your facts straight-

Terera was not in office at the time and had nothing to do with it.

    1. Teresa's record of giving unnecessary salary increases to staff make the problem worse. Those pensions are based off Barth’s salary increases and are unsustainable. They are a social injustice. She loves to drive a financial humvee while handing out Gus Vina's kool-aid.

Think of all those politicians before the 60's that were cowards and would not speak up on, bring up, and vote up on civil rights. Today's elected cowards are afraid of voting for economic justice. Our grandchildren will pay the price.

  9. Dalablabber - hilarious name!!! It was great fun watching him blather incoherently at the pre-election debates trying to skirt around Kitchen and LoanGate - he made the proverbial deer in the headlights look like Einstein! Didn't someone mention that Guerin did marathons after retiring on a physical disability - isn't that fraud? I guess when "Just Pay Me Donations" Dumanis is in office, it is all a matter of perspective.

    1. Guerin ran in relay races, including in the city formerly known as Hondo, Japan, where she and other employees and Council Members took junkets on the taxpayers' dime. I don't believe Christy every ran in a marathon; don't think she was up to that kind of feat.

Remember "kitten-gate" in Hondo? Maggie stopped to rescue a kitten (or was it two kittens?) during her segment of the relay race, and Christy was furious! Guerin came back to Encinitas exclaiming about how the Japanese clapped wherever the City entourage went, also complaining, bitterly, about Maggie, making fun of her. It was all written up in the Coast News and NCT, as I recall.

The whole time that Christy was running in races and working for Bilbray, and still, to this day, I'm sure, she has been getting $3,000 per month retirement disability from the Sheriff's Dept. for stress fractures. I don't know if her husband is now retired, but he got a one time settlement from Workers' Compensation, and went on, to continue working for the Sheriff's Dept., as a Colonel. When I objected that Christy had a conflict of interests, and should not be in on negotiations for wages for Sheriff's Deputies for Encinitas, I was "pooh-poohed" by both Guerin and her lap dogs, including Sabine.

    2. I happened to spot Guerin's husband one day. He looked very heavy, dirty clothes and quite unhappy. Maybe she booted him out for Stocks.

    1. I don't think it should be legal for someone who is still able to work and able to run in races to get retirement disability for stress fractures. Dumanis has the discretion to bring officers to court, or not. She very rarely brings public officers to court on charges, and does NOTHING when she receives complaints about Brown Act Violations. Jerome Stocks used to brag about the fact that no public officer in the state had ever been convicted of a misdemeanor Brown Act Violation. That is because it's next to impossible to prove intent, and also because these Council Members, etc., are insulated by a hierarchy of privilege; they consider that they are all part of the "State," and answer to a higher authority. The Attorney General simply refers people to our local District Attorneys, who have "sole jurisdiction" over violations of Government Code, apparently.

    2. Mayor Barth voted to give the fire unions pay raises, then she hid this fact as pension reform by claiming the fire employees were going to pay more for pension- of course all Barth did was increase their salaries to cover the costs of the contributions and then spike their final pensions. See how it works in the land of Barth, Muir and Gaspar-

taking money from you the private workers and rewarding their friends.

Barth is absolutley no different than Jerome Stocks when it comes to failed leadership, failed policies, destruction of community character and rewarding city employees- Vina and Sabien get glowing endorsements from Barth- just as Stocks would have done-

    3. Barth apologist hoping to spin her way to Mayor in 2014?

Barth will be creamed in a landslide- few of the residents who supported her in 2010 will work on her behalf- Barth is so detached from reality she does not know how the hard work of her supporters in 2010 got her elected - she barely beat out a sitting mayor under indictment from the DA and Phony Tony Kranz and his angry Obama Hitler rant broacast on youtube-

It wasn't Barth that got her elected but the residents who worked for her, that won't happen this time. Maybe she thinks she can buy the election - just like Ol Jerome Stocks- Stocks and Barth - two of a kind

    4. I'd still vote for her against Kristin, but that ain't saying much. I would prefer new blood on all 5 seats, including the mayor's role.

The Tony rant you describe was some dude who was basically paid to provoke him, a total Harry Eiler dirty pool stunt. Comparing that to Hitler shows your total lack of intellect.

Here's a real question, instead of the usual hate fest. Who's going to step up and run in the two available seats? Everything else is just hot air.

    5. Green Jeans-

Tony had an altercation with a man holding an Obama sign comparing Obama to Hitler- FYI

Why would I vote for Barth over Gaspar?

Gaspar has showed a backbone to stand up to Vina, Barth has not. Gaspar has shown a willingness to listen to residents like Bob Bonde and Lynn Marr- Barth treats Bonde and Marr like the plague.

Barth has been a complete failure- if Gaspar is seeking a Congresional Run in 2016 she would be more likley to sho some restraint. Barth on the other hand has nothing but disdain for the people who worked to get her elected. She is hoping 'the business community; will elect her but they won't - she has proven she has no characther , all the more interesting because Barth seems intent on destroying the characther we do have-

no hate fest here, just the way it is.

    6. Mr. Green Jeans,

Let me correct something there. The Hitler guy was Roger Ogden, who has been seen all over San Diego with his Obama-Hitler sign. The initial encounter was by chance, as Tony was down in North Park or Hillcrest somewhere at a coffee shop or something, and happened upon Ogden's offensive sign-waving.

The political stunt stuff was long afterward, when local political operatives heard about it and tracked down Ogden to come to Encinitas and tell his poor victim story.

    7. I took the the point or opinion of the post being to show that Barth winning the election in 2010 had more to do with

      1. Her supporters working for her by handing out flyers, walking neighborhoods, etc.

      2. Her opponents were flawed - Dalager with his DA problems for Kitchengate and Kranz saddled by being a first time candidate and the video that went viral showing him in some type of alteraction with the man above you reference.

I took the point of the post to be that Barth won't be able to count on her supporters in 2014 or her opponents shooting themselves in the foot. Both scenario's above seem true to me.

    9. Thanks WC, my point on that remains the same. Invoking Hitler shows a lack of any intellectual or moral capability. As I recall, they exchanged words, then the guy got in his face, and Tony flipped him the bird.

I'd of done the same thing. Then it was dredged up by the evil empire locally as a sign "Tony Couldn't be Trusted". That's the kind of garbage Stocks and his crew pulled every time. I guess it was better than running on their record.

Gaspar is still a put up. She's bought and paid for by Team Stocks, team developer etc. She has no backbone. How many times do we have to see her having lunch with Mike Andreen to figure out where she stands. Her abstaining on the one Pacific View vote is all I need to know. Even Bond gave her crap at the time. We have to do better.

I have to tell you, I campaigned for Teresa, and she's never shown me any disdain. Maybe others have a different experience. I just don't see that she's been very effective this term.

It happens, it's not personal. But the question as always remains, who will run? I voted for Maggie the last time, and I would have preferred she not run again. Why, there was no one else, other than the Doug Longs of the world.

Someone on this board who has time, means and ability, let's see some hands in the air on who is willing to step up..

Then they were required to pay SOMETHING, and were given a raise in that same amount. Then all the "non-represented" (by the Employees' Union) city officers got equal raises, like Gus Vina, because he had to pay for his life insurance policy, as I recall? For EUSD, Baird gets his life insurance policy paid for by the taxpayers. Mo Muir voted no on that, too, the only one to do so.

    11. Reposting, to correct a typo:

Stocks was not reelected either; we won't forget that. A lot of dirty politics went on when Dalager was running, for the first time, that time against Holz.

When someone says, "look it up," that person could provide a link, if one actually exists. People are given refunds when they overpay. For instance, many of us got refunds because Council wrongly had us paying taxes, which were charged on our trash bills, for a project on which we had not been allowed to vote. When we finally did get to vote, as in Prop C, we said NO new taxes, and we got a refund for monies already paid.

The only exception to our being allowed to vote on new taxes are water and sewer taxes and fees, which are set by Council, and which almost automatically go up, year after year. Water rates are set to go up a minimum of 30%, probably more, over the next five years. That is much more than the rate of inflation. The water meter fee is a regressive tax, because it is not based on water usage.

  19. I would like to add one point about running for Council. I considered it, actually more than once, however, here's the thing. Your life will be picked and pulled apart, and every possible thing you may have ever done wrong will come out, especially if you are a serious contender. That is politics, plain and simple. So many of us old folks who do have the time and means to run. would rather not have our lives investigated in that depth. Me, I marched in hundreds of protests during Vietnam. I would probably be called a "commie". When one reaches a certain age, and has lived and loved, their lives are filled with great things, and not so great things. Personally, I think I am intelligent enough to be a Councilmemebr. I think I know enough psychology to possibly be a step ahead of what the people wanted. But, I do NOT want to sit up on that dais 3 Weds. a month and take the publics comments, that were once favorable, and are now not. I do not have that thick of a skin. There have been many people who have run, and when others got angry at me for saying I don't think he or she would make a good council member, it was for the sake of that person, because I knew if they had done anything halfway noble in their lives, there would be those that used it against. them. So, please my dear EU friends, of which there may be none after this rant, let's talk rationally and reasonably. We are an amazing bunch of citizens. If there is a person out there that can run and feel that he or she could improve this City, PLEASE RUN. I will give you the first campaign check. So, now that my rant has ended, please continue. Pay no attention to the white rabbit.

    2. Only if they turn on their base. I'd heard many Lisa and Tony supporters say while campaigning "we know we won't always agree, but they'll be sooo much better, we can finally relax and not worry so much about the state of the city."

9:30, you are dead wrong. Look at how Lisa and Tony did a 100% 180. Who wouldn't complain from the rooftops, having given time, money, energy to get them elected, only to have them vote as Stocks would have? And Teresa?? Her big chance came and she likewise turned her back.
