Sore loser in SDUHSD election Barbara Groth goes off on bitter rant against successors

Read all about it at Del Mar Times.

Groth grew up in Cardiff, but married a doctor and now lives in Rancho Santa Fe.

Stay classy, Encinitas. Honey Boo-Boo on the Pacific.

  2. Sounds like it was time for her to move on. 5 terms is 3 two many. Since when did school board become a career....

    1. Ask Mo Muir. Looks like she is now bouncing around fGuess she needs the money. Looks like maybe her husband's big pension can't buy enough groceries.

    2. Correction to above: should have read: bouncing around from school board to another school board.

    3. Mo Muir got a "Mo Muir Day" on November 18. Oh, please, give me a break. Who did she have to pay to get that done?

Sounds like she has all the qualifications:

"Groth capped ... with a vindictive attack against a fellow board member and fear-laced warnings for the future"

  6. Not sure the point of this post other than one more opportunity to vent their spleen against their "oppressors". I guess getting your head handed to you in the last election requires additional venting. Since I don't watch any reality TV shows, I had to look up the Honey Boo-Boo reference. It saddens me to say that including that unexplained reference here says a lot.

    1. Gaspar had fewer
"No" votes than any other candidate. She won, and won big. Get used to it.

    2. I don't consider Gaspar's win very big when she received more NO votes. Try another theory.

Yes, this is the way losers talk. Even though Gaspar won handily, she didn't win a majority, therefore you think you really won. Nice try. You got your head handed to you.

Could it change in 2 years? Sure, but the candidate favored by many commenters here came in a distant third. Of course the reason for that that's proffered here is that the majority of Encinitas voters, at least those who show up, are morons. Great platform going forward.

  8. That's an impressive victory for Gaspar in a multi-candidate field. A rout.

    3. That math of "not voting for" could be used in any election, especially in the US with our low voter participation. There must be 250 million eligible voters in the U.S. Whether it be Clinton, Reagan, Obama, or a Bush, if the candidate gets 60 million votes, the same math would give 190 million didn't vote for. And so what? That is more of a statement about the apathetic electorate, not about the candidate. Same is true of Gaspar, and her huge election success.

  10. Wow WC. What happened to the thread about the YMCA ball fields and Joe Corders concern that he expressed at wed's council meeting? Thanks Joe for bringing this to all of our attention. Anybody want to take any bets that Leichstag, sorry if I may have misspelled that, has had any influence with the future use of that property whose past history has been for the betterment of our community. Just what else has changed to warrant the serious intention of some future plans that may not be part of the former Ecke's ag in perpetuity restriction? I am sure someone will chime in to clear up my confusion over the relationship between the YMCA fields and their new neighbor and why those fields are now threatened with being replaced by some kind of development.

  11. Sorry WC now the thread has returned about the YMCA ball fields. It showed up and then disappeared for a few minutes and is now back. Thanks.

  12. 9:17, I'm trying to figure out your logic. Isn't that's like saying "Most people today are dead".

  13. I would not consider those votes for Gaspar a huge victory. If you look at the numbers, more people voted NO for her. Not impressive at all.

Lame duck mayor for two more years as Encinitas continues to suffer.

    ReplyDelete
  14. There were 38,810 registered voters in Encinitas for the 2014 elections. Of those, 18,270 voted in the mayoral race. That's 47.1% = not bad for a non-presidential election. Of the 18,270 who voted in the mayoral race, 9,659 did not vote for Gaspar, while 8,611 did vote for Gaspar. The not for Gaspar votes exceeded the Gaspar votes by 1,048.

    That's simple arithmetic, not logic.

    1. Right, more people didn't want her as mayor. If they stay tuned for the next two years, they will figure out why she got more NO votes. It was clear to me.

    2. Good grief! She won the freaking election, getting more votes than anyone else, by far. Was "No" running?

      Delete
    3. She would have smoked any other candidate in one on one race.

      Delete
    4. Gaspar's plurality in the five-person mayoral race was 47.1%.

The arithmetic says there's no assurance she would have "smoked any other candidate" in a two-person race. For example, what if the other candidate were Dennis Holz?

      Delete
    5. Bottom line - she is Mayor. Claiming the scattered vote was a mandate against her is pointless.

      Delete
    6. You can't erase the NO votes for Gaspar. She received more NO votes than YES votes. That can not be disputed. Yes, she is the mayor for the next two years and we, the public, will suffer because of it.

      Thanks YES voters for nothing.

    7. 47.1% in a five person race is an extraordinarily successful result for Gaspar.
Focusing on the supposed "no" votes must keep you happy in your little world. The rest of us live in reality.

    8. If you ignore the NO votes, you are not facing reality in your little world.

    9. 3:05 The "NO" votes are very telling. Too bad people like you don't like facing truth. Don't complain when there is more traffic, more building, and it takes you two hours to get to the grocery store and back.

Maybe people like you just like sitting in traffic and looking at yourself in the mirror.

    10. People like me realize that in our democracy the winner of an election only needs to get the most votes, not the majority of votes. If you only believe an election result matters if a candidate gets moe than 50%, you will live an unhappy life.

      Delete
    11. 47% in a five person race is a very impressive result.

    12. I voted for Cameron, but Gaspar would have been my second choice.

Are you calling me a NO vote?

  15. 12:15, Nice try, Dennis.

  16. Let's face it. Dennis Holz is not going to run again. Maybe he saw what others who don't run saw, but he saw it first hand. It's not a cakewalk type of job. You cannot please everyone and you have to stay within California law, as well as Encinitas law. You have to sit on mind numbing committees that meet at all sorts of odd hours, you have to go to all city events and smile. Really, who would want the job as it is now? Maybe that's why smart people don't run.

    ReplyDelete
  17. How do we get such dummies for mayor? We have had the uneducated ones (no college or work experience), a blade sharpener, a housewife, and an insurance salesman. Encinitas sure is a lucky little place.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I wonder what a really smart person could do one the Council. Not necessarily Ph.D. smart, like Lisa, but a person who is intelligent and street smart. This person likes to get the job done, and not carry it on for years; would fire Vina and Sabine; would be more transparent (but then again someone on this blog would probably make sure about one tiny incident that happened in their early 20's' and lastly LISTEN to the citizens. Any takers? We have 2 years to find a couple of people like the above.

    1. The smart people in this city wouldn't waste their precious life in running for council. Only the ones who need attention and are ego driven tend to run.

    2. Shaffer has a phd, doesn't make her smart. Far from it. I doubt she can read a map.

      Delete
    3. Shaffer is by far smarter than the current mayor. In fact, Shaffer seems to be running the council. Half the time Gaspar looks wide eyed with a blank stare wondering what just happened. What a ditz.

  19. When two of the people in the five-person race are Bawany and Fidel, 47% isn't that big a deal. If all five were true contenders, 47% would be a big deal.

Nobody is disputing that Gaspar won. The point is that 53% of those who voted in the mayoral race didn't vote for Gaspar.

    1. OK - but 68% voted against Kranz, 87% voted against Cameron, 96% voted against Bawany, and 97% voted against Fidel.......I mean, the numbers just don't lie!

  21. Gaspar trounced a combination of a fellow sitting council person and a former council person.
She can and should claim it was a significant success.
Most people, who don't live in little worlds, see it that way.

  22. What we witnessed was when we have a 30% turnout, nationally and locally, the money has all the power over the people and our grand american experiment of a representative democracy falls by the wayside. Until this electorate cares enough to participate in significant numbers, we will continue to get what we have seen happen recently. This birthright of all citizens should be a priority. To our shame, it is not.
