Residents report string of mail thefts

CBS 8:
Residents in Encinitas have taken to social media to complain about a recent rash of mail theft in their area of North County San Diego. On the apps Nextdoor and Ring, several residents in Encinitas and Cardiff have claimed their mail has been snatched directly from their mail boxes.

The thieves reportedly strike in the early morning hours before anyone is up to catch them.

One woman that spoke to News 8 by phone said she had three outgoing checks stolen from her Encinitas mailbox.
It's a good idea not to put outgoing checks in the mailbox, especially overnight.

  1. It is even risky to put letters in a regular mailbox. These things don't have very complex locking mechanisms either.

  2. Our neighborhood has been hit several times. I believe that the USPS found buckets of mail in Encinitas that was from all over southern cal. Once the mail has been cataloged and processed as evidence it will be delivered. The theory is that it's gang related. Call Carrie Mannon @ 760.753.1415 if you have any evidence of theft.

Personally I do very little transacting through snail mail. What with paperless billing and mobile banking most things go through the internet. Agreed that the internet has its own set of issues and risks. I guess we're screwed no matter what we do! I miss the old days when a plain paper bag of unmarked $20's would solve any problem.........(just a joke, folks........)

  3. I am sure that most of the mail thefts are from the trash pickers that invade our neighborhoods while the Sheriff's Department Deputies are ignoring the problem. When you complain, you get no response, so the pickers keep it. If your mail boxes are next to your trash cans on trash day, watch out because you will lose mail.

    1. On recycling day, people in cars work the bins in the early AM hours. There is also foot traffic....

  4. Now gas theft. I live up an easement, but no matter. Someone has been draining gas from my car for a year and then they got greedy and stole the whole tank full. I got a locked gas cap. Autozone has 'em for $20.00.
