Encinitas pedestrian and bicyclist deaths continue to rise

"Vision Zero" is a plan the city adopted about 8 years ago, part of a national push to reduce road fatalities.

How it started:
Vision Zero starts with the ethical belief that everyone has the right to move safely in their communities, and that system designers and policy makers share the responsibility to ensure safe systems for travel.
How it's going:
On Tuesday night, community members rallied outside City Hall to call on the city to take action after three children were hit and killed by cars in Encinitas since 2023.

The protest, organized by Safe Streets Encinitas, saw a large turnout. After 17-year-old Seraphina Rose Fadick was hit and killed by a car when crossing Camino Del Norte on July 10, the group is demanding the city make changes.
We don't have the statistics -- we'll leave that to enterprising FOIA citizens -- but it certainly seems that Encinitas roads have become more dangerous since the Vision Zero crowd came to town. Certainly the deaths of Ryan Currie and Dr. Jennings Worley appear directly attributable to the idiotic street designs of Blakespear & Co.

  1. Zero vision is more like it.

I thought the same three years ago when it was proposed.

More leftovers from the previous majority.

  3. Blakespear/Kranz emergency efforts did not save lives. Two people passed after the emergency declaration. Santa Fe was rushed. Stata Fe was not safe. Blakespear wants a law to remove power from cities( bike paths). The men who passed in the bollards, absent. Cherry 🍒 picking

  14. Last year SD had 262 children with E-bike Traumatic Injuries. Many have died, like 15 yr old Brodee. It doesn’t matter how much education they try to force feed the kids, they will continue to be killed or be severely injured while riding their bikes on the dangerous roads in SDC. Kids will be kids and they are not safe on the roads with speeding and distracted drivers .
More blood from the f$ckimg demon that was mayor from 2016-2022. While she approved to upzoned 15 massive projects, that would increase traffic to a ravenous dangerous level, she and her band of blood thirsty pawns went to the schools to push the kids to ride their bikes every where. Parents made huge mistakes to allow themselves to be sucked in by her and her deadly pawns lies!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. He was killed because his parents didn't teach him how to ride safely. You can't merge a bike going 20 in front of a truck going 50. This is why you see kids getting off the bikes and using the crosswalks. Tragedy. New technology outstrips people's ability to deal with it. At least Carlsbad clamped down on the illegal e motorcycles....

    2. So interesting how some people decide who/what is at fault for different deaths based on political convenience.

      Delete
    3. Those are the facts, go look at the Coast news article. No fault was found with the driver. That street is 50mph....

      Delete
    4. Right. Not gonna go search for whatever article you're referring to. My point is that the only things that keeps Brodee from being a mascot for the anti-Blakespear crowd is no fucking bollards or " road furniture" involved, not on 101 and the parents associated with Blakespear and Safe Streets Encinitas.

      Delete
    5. All the road deaths are a tragedy, ignore the poltics and understand what actually happened. Don't let your kids or your neighbors kids hit the road without an understanding of cars and traffic. That's it...

      Delete
    6. Bullshit. We hear "sad" people speaking up about Dr. Worely all the time, along with anyone else killed/injured along the 101. Except the lady that dared to be friendly with Blakespear prior to her accident. Even the man that was riding late at night with no helmet or light has been deemed politically convenient.

Brodee and Emery are ignored by Blakespear haters because they either don't give a shit, their parents have spoken out in a way the councilmen find inconvenient politically convenient, or it doesn't fit the narrative of the spandex crew.

I agree that these deaths and injuries are all tragic, but the selective attention comes off as politically motivated.

      Delete
    7. You can debate yourself on who's using which accident to their political advantage, I'm not using any of them. People have to be able to think for themselves and figure out the facts of what happened vs. what is said by someone in politics. Meanwhile, driving and biking have their dangers, and you have to learn how to protect yourself. If you want to waste your time hating on this of that politician, that's up to you...

      Delete
    8. I don't need to debate with anyone, I've given my opinion.

It's not about hating politicians, it's about people with agendas picking and choosing among the dead. Like the moderator here.

    9. If you're talking about the Repeater, the person who lists the names and then goes after Bruce, I agree. Pure nonsense. Sadly, election season is here and you can see various people come on here and start assigning blame for election points. Lame.

  15. Does Rest in Peace still have any meaning?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, it absolutely does. But if the city is debating bike lanes, safety features, ripping up roads, renaming streets and other policy issues like bike safety, the deaths and injuries are gonna come up. The horrible things that happened are the reason changes are being proposed and argued over.

      Delete
    2. Right, but you have to be able to read about the individual accidents and realize where operator error can come into play. The accident by Trader Joe's where the guy ran the light is operator error, roberta walker in Leucadia was operator error in the dark and the kid on the ebike was operator error as well. You can make some changes, but the human element still comes into play. Dude ran that one light be several seconds, you can't unmake that.

      Delete
    3. This is a difficult path to go down, because it does start to sound like blaming the dead/injured person.

I'll say this: with Brodee, sure we can say he made an error. He was also a kid learning about all kinds of things about life, on his way to school. Most of the kids that are going to/from school at SDA are in the same position. So maybe city leaders would want to make the road safer to avoid similar tragedies in the future. Instead, they're tearing out the protections that were put in place, making us pay for it, and attempting to push the blame on their personal enemy.

With Emery, she did exactly what she was supposed to do, and the driver is at fault. Yet there is no movement on addressing solutions by this council even though residents have spoken up for months about reasonable changes.

The human element of course comes up in almost any situation where a bike rider and pedestrian have a collision. I'm not going to do a breakdown of what happened in each situation. However, when the councilmen focus on the concerns of the spandex crew, almost exclusively on the 101, it comes off as insincere and politically motivated.

      Delete
    4. That's two possibly related but different situations. You cannot merge a bike that goes 20 in front of a truck going 50. Basic driving and biking knowledge. Not going to spend an hour on that, up to the parents to provide that guidance.

The lanes in front of SDA, the whole design is flawed, so a shame that couldn't be caught and revised prior to build. Is it worth ripping it all out, maybe not, especially bike lines, but there are issues there and now heavily polititicized. Main issue for me, drop off and pickup nd to be moved off of Santa Fe.

I think it's fair to ask, what can the council do at the Taco Bell intersection to prevent that particular accident. It's going to be tough. We have had red light cameras, they weren't there. The driver hit the intersection 4-5 second late.

I'm sure the spandex bikers want all bollards and stops removed in Cardiff, but that hasn't happened, so the lobbying hasn't worked, and that stuff is a disaster.

Think for a minute about all the poor people who are run over in South Central LA, they have no advocacy......

    5. 3:28- you are an idiot.

  16. 11:22am Yes, many are questioning the roadway design.

Are you defending the original Santa Fe Dr. design? Just asking for some clarity.

Ripping up roads? The only ripping up has been the clueless, formerly approved by a past council majority Santa Fe roadway design.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. By the "original" Santa Fe design you mean how the block was before the Blakespear changes or how it is now?

I feel the situation on multiple streets in that area (Melba, Balour, Santa Fe) were and are sketchy with kids biking, walking and getting dropped off before the changes were made.

I think it's dumb and politically motivated to make us pay $4 million to tear the changes up. I'm not sure what problem we're solving either. It sounds like cobble stones in planters and back in parking, for a block, are the overpriced issues.

      Delete
    2. I’m old enough to remember when Lynn and co freaked out about roundabouts being the end of the world. And now they are accepted and nobody cares, except the intersections are safer and with less congestion.

I’m sure the changes at SDA would’ve been the same story if the dummies didn’t waste taxpayer dollars listening to the knee jerk reactions of people who can’t deal with change.

    1. It's not a question of blame, it's what happened. The kid tried to merge in front of a truck going 50 on a bike going 20, tragedy occurs.

Dude down in cardiff is down in lanes post midnight, also a tragedy. Was he impaired, had he been at a bar? Raise your hand if you saw the police or toxicology report. Both are a life wasted. Move on.

    2. I don't think the point is who is to blame. Its that over time people tend to make the same mistakes, whether they're driving or biking.

  19. Crossing 101 and pedestrian Emily gets killed by a hit and run driver. On New Year’s Eve pedestrian crossing 101 at Encinitas Blvd gets killed.
Rady’s reported a 1,700% increase in children on e-bikes experience
Ing traumatic injuries that required Emergency Room Admission. 17 year old pedestrian female killed recently in Olivenhain crossing at El Camino del Norte. Our area is not set up like Europe for pedestrians and cyclists.
FYI: had the satanic dyke BIAspear made changes to Santa Fe Dr at El Camino Real in 2017 ( she was mayor from 2016-2022) Brodee would still be alive today. Just lowering the speed limit as cars traveling North on ECT approaching the Santa Fe Dr stop light, painting the crosswalk, adding the bike lane, keeping the beacons light working, would have saved an innocent child from being killed by a crazy truck driver driving over 50mph, and not seeing Brodee signaling to change lanes!
To this day the speed limit before that intersection has not been reduced. Just lowering, one half a mile before the intersection to 35mph, would have allowed the truck to slow down sufficiently to 1) see Brodee signaling 2) stopping before he hit him! The satanic, blood thirsty dyke did nothing for all those years while she was mayor from 2017 on, while the plans to improve that intersection sat in the engineering department 👹 what she did do is bend over for developers to approve 15 massive projects to increase traffic exponentially, creating a death trap for our children!

Cars and trucks etc, for better or worse are how we get around. We have a series of higher speed streets that connect Encinitas with Inland cities. Encinitas and Leucadia are a bit lower, La Costa and ECR are higher. You have to know where you are riding.

Will it ever be truly safe on ECR for rec bike riding. No. Did any of us know the sea change that would happen in MArch 2020 when every kid obtained an E-bike, no.

We love tech in this country, but are slow as hell to catch up to some of the problems it brings. Time is not going to stand still Encinitas, not on development, not on bikes, not on a looming El Nino.....

  21. Children no matter how much bike education they get, are still very vulnerable, inexperienced, trusting and immature to be out in SDC/Encinitas deadly roads.

The San Diego Drug Alliance is always pleading during Oral Communications to stop 🛑 the drug shops in our city, because children’s brains are still developing until they are 25 years old. Drug exposure before that is a lifelong problem for them .

The same logic applies to their ability to
use biking skills, on roads with nut jobs that are driving carelessly, speeding, texting, drunk/high on drugs, and cannot see well.

Their parents have been sold lies upon lies and sadly they have bought into it. Hopefully, soon they will see it for what it is, the developer cartels and their servants on the council/bike coalitions pushing this deadly agenda on our innocent kids, so they can justify the increase in traffic from their massive projects to a deadly level.

The 7th cycle is just around the corner, requiring at minimum 6,000 - 7,000 new units to meet the HCD-RHNA mandate of 1,200 - 1,400 VL/L income units by 2037…

  25. 11:06/11:53 From Ed’s website: As a 13-year member of the Olivenhain Municipal Water District’s Board of Directors, I helped earn a AAA bond rating, championed the Carlsbad desalination plant to reduce dependence on imported water, grew recycled water use from near zero to 15%, and lobbied successfully in Washington, D.C. for $20 million to the North County Recycled Water Coalition.
With a 26-year career at the Carlsbad Fire Department — rising to Battalion Chief — and three additional years as Deputy Fire Chief with North County Fire Protection District, I served on the front lines of major emergencies including the Harmony Grove, Cedar, and Witch Fires. As a chief officer, I managed budgets, directed human resources, negotiated contracts, built and maintained fire stations, implemented solar energy across facilities and led teams through both crisis and calm.
I served three years as a Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) commissioner, focusing on regional land use and government efficiency.
For seven years I was a full-time professor of Emergency Management and Fire Technology at Palomar College, mentoring hundreds of diverse future emergency responders and serving as Department Chair of Public Safety.
I hold a Master’s and Bachelor’s in Public Administration from SDSU (go Aztecs!) — both earned while working full time and raising three kids with my wife. Service, leadership, and integrity is in my DNA.

  39. Lorri has a post up saying there is a rumor being spread that Ed didn't grow up here. That's incorrect.

The rumor is that he grew up here, lived elsewhere as an adult, then moved back to Encinitas recently.

If the rumor is true, it will most likely come up in the near future with receipts. If it's untrue, its just a rumor and that's the end of it.

  41. Ed Sprague purchased his home in Cardiff November 29th, 2023 for $1.8 million. Before Nov 2023, he lived in multiple cities including Carlsbad. He hadn't lived in Encinitas since he was a kid. That's part of why he's blasting social media about his childhood, so it appears he's lived here the entire time. The Encinitas MAGA machine is supporting this guy so expect everything he says to be a half truth at best.

    1. He could be a native of shithole Florida who moved here 5 minutes ago and MAGAtts would still make excuses and vote for their MAGAtt candidate.

    2. With the some of the people hyping him right now, there most likely are attempts to mislead voters. That's just how they operate. Lie, accuse, attack and whine like pussies if anyone dares to do anything even a fraction as bad.

    4. Cardiff at $1.8 million is pretty much a blue collar price. And he has to pay those gigantic property tax to feed the obese City Hall that Bruce Ehlers keeps feeding with 🌵Jenny.

And he is going to be an excellent council member. Thank you sir for running. 🙏

    5. The cost of his home isn't the issue. I don't blame Ed either, I blame the fucking psychos he had the bad judgement to align himself with.

If he just moved back here a couple of years ago, he probably wasn't even aware of how awful they are (yet).

  43. Ed will be an improvement over the joyless one.

Labeling on this blog, as opposed to coming clean and sticking with the facts, would be a novel idea that is much needed. Supposition appears to be some peoples only recourse.

  44. LOL 5:04. All he and his backers need to do is be honest to begin with.

Same with Marco, same with Bruce and OF COURSE same with Luke & Jim. The city councilmen and their handlers have a well established inconsistent relationship with the truth, which is why people doubt anything associated with them. They seem to have no problem deceiving voters.

    1. Say it like it is. What you are implying is that Rachel and company lie to us. Bruce lied about stopping builders and Bruce lied about not appointing a replacement for his district if he won the Mayor position. He lied. Rachel railed against appointments to council seats when Tony was Mayor, but then suddenly decided it was A-Okay when Bruce became Mayor. She hand picked her childhood friend and local dunce Marco San Antonion and pressed Bruce to appoint him. He complied, knowing who butters his bread. She hand picked Luke and acted as his campaign manager.
Marco himself lied and though he indicated that he would only serve out the appointment and not seek re-election, this was just a head fake to go with his fake cowboy persona. He wouldn't know which end of a horse to shove a carrot in. So here we are. Liars, pretenders and frauds, running Encinitas elections.

    2. There are so many examples of the councilmen and their buddies being dishonest, from the time they were running to the almost 2 years they've been on council.

Anything they claim has to be double and triple checked, because they're either bullshitting or ignoring the public when caught in a lie.

    3. That's all they do. Either they're dancing around the truth while attacking the councilmen's opponents or they're doing it to hype the councilmen & candidates they manage.

They know good and well the issue is they dug up this dude (Ed), convinced him to run, made up his origin story which conveniently jumps over the fact he likely wasn't a resident as an adult until recently, and pumped up the childhood photos on the beach.

It's Luke & Jim all over again.

  47. It’s always the same model.

The incompetent city manager like 🌵 Jenny keeps recommending and adding more and more full-time employees with pensions to the city employees obese City Hall list, and than cries that there’s no money for maintenance of existing infrastructure, depreciation, replacement, funds, and improvement projects. It’s an easy sign that the city managers are completely incompetent when they don’t do long-term financial planning. Encinitas Current city manager does not

Check out what Oceanside is doing now as an example of what’s to come in Encinitas Under this huge staff building and obese City Hall business operations. With the taxpayers continue to get screwed.

“Now is not the time to burden Oceanside with another tax,” Nygaard said.

If more than 50% of voters in November say yes, the new rate would take effect no less than 110 days after the election and expire April 1, 2037.

“We really, really need it,” said Mayor Esther Sanchez.

The city has several large, long-planned infrastructure projects with no money for construction, she said. One is the replacement of the century-old, concrete-and-steel bridge that provides the only access to the popular Oceanside Municipal Pier. The most recent estimate for that is more than $40 million.

“She is crumbling, and she is becoming a public safety issue,” Sanchez said of the pier bridge. “We’ve just got to get it done.”

Other important projects include a new fire station, San Luis Rey River flood-control work, and a new police headquarters to replace the temporary location that opened 30 years ago in a shopping center on Mission Avenue just east of El Camino Real.

Did their Mayor said they really really needed it? Then it must be true. 😂. that’s a sure sign. The taxpayers are getting fleeced. this taxpayers association bullshit is a joke. They should be ashamed of themselves whoever is on the board. 👎

We see you. Unk Ehlers may be better than the communist competitor, but he sure sucks and his draining Encinita’s future. We need Jim or Ed to lead the ship and higher a competent city management team.
