Department improvements under Mayor Bruce Ehlers and the new director of Development Services, Scott Drapkin, tightened up processes to address violations faster, collect back taxes (some dating to 2022) and track progress through regular oversight reviews. Incredibly, this was not the case in past years.
In contrast, mayoral candidate Rimga Viskanta appears to advocate for a subjective approach to code enforcement. She recently told some Cardiff residents that while at the City of Solana Beach, she helped a business owner treat a late filing as on time to avoid penalties. Viskanta justified it by describing the applicant as “a feeble, elderly woman.” She deflected blame by saying her manager approved her request to bend the code, even though she initially pled the case.
Going by her description of the feeble, elderly woman, Viskanta presumably would not extend the same discretion to an able, young man. In fact, not granting the same exception to all applicants in the same situation would violate their due process. She should know this.

When it suits him, Marco Gonzalez likes to take a "regional approach to planning" like when he was able to put an extra 50% extra market rate units on the Desert Rose project by using Carlsbad zoning. Now people are saying that Ed has not lived in Cardiff long enough, even though he lived in La Costa before, which was almost part of the City of Encinitas when incorporation happened. Please vote for someone who brings actual background and applied skills to the job.

Ed actually HAS regional experience in Encinitas, Carlsbad, and the larger North County. Threatening public officials is something that nobody should sanction. This was true when Blakespear was threatened as well as when Marco received this call last week. Both of them have spouses and children who were upset. I would never vote for Blakespear for any office with her pattern of abusive policies towards her own hometown, but threats of these kinds are not acceptable.

It would be great to bring down the temperature in this election. I have to make one point. Some are upset that Bruce appointed Marco San Antonio after he said that he was looking for someone who would not run in 2026. Brad also said that if he were appointed that he would run this year, too. Where is the outrage that Brad made the same pledge that Marco SA did? Bruce made a compromise and voted for Marco because Marco had won a recent election in the Olivenhain Water District that overlaps with his district. Further, Bruce didn't want to go for 9 months with no representation if an election was held that likely, would have yielded the same results. Finally, that election would have cost more than $150,000 in taxpayers' funds to hold an election. I think Bruce made an excellent decision.

If Bruce and Marco had an ounce of it, they would have honored the commitment to 1- not appoint a member to an open seat (Bruce, a promise he campaigned on to become Mayor) and 2- to only appoint someone who would commit to not running for the seat after the appointment term ran out (Bruce, a promise he broke immediately after becoming Mayor). Then fake cowboy branded Marco, wouldn't honor Bruce's stated condition, and now he's running for the seat Bruce promised he wouldn't.

Isn't it better to save the taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars and provide representation to the district than to cause the death of others and take no responsibility for it?
