Skater Ian "Poods" Barry dead after fall from Neptune bluffs

Lifetime Encinitas resident and skateboarder Ian Barry has died after a fall from the Neptune bluffs early this morning.

NC Times:
A man who was found unconscious early Thursday after apparently falling from a cliff in Leucadia has died, authorities said.

Authorities identified the man as Ian B. Barry, 22, of Encinitas.

Sheriff's deputies got a call about 3:20 a.m. from a passer-by who spotted the man lying unconscious on the beach near the intersection of Neptune Avenue and North El Portal Street, said Lt. James Bovet.

The injured man was about 80 feet below the top of the cliffs above, Bovet said. Deputies did not suspect foul play.

Rescuers took the man to a hospital, Bovet said.

Barry died at the hospital at 7:28 a.m., according to the county medical examiner's office. An autopsy had not been completed.
Ian was featured in this 2011 issue of Soggybones magazine.

    2. does the word insensitive ring a bell?

Let me guess - you also protest at soldiers funerals.

Loved ones left behind would find your comment very poor form.

  3. Hi. My name is John Carroll. I'm a reporter with 10News. We're trying to understand what happened to Ian and obviously a skater who knew him could help us let people know just who Ian was. I'm going to head up to the area where it happened and if anyone would like to talk to me about it, drop me an email at john.carroll@10news.com or you could just show up there. Thanks in advance.

  11. From what I heard from his friends is that he was at the Daily Double earlier in the night. Ian kind of couch surfs at a house next tot eh cliff he fell from. He jumped the rail and fell from a cliff that has a sign saying to stay off the cliffs. It sound like alcohol and some bad choices had a part in his death. Anyone who had seen Ian lately knew he wasn't as clean cut a he was in that photo above. It sucks he died but he had no reason being on that bluff in the first place.

  12. And yes, Ian had been drinking.

  13. The details from that night and his overall appearance have nothing to do with this tragedy. Who are you to judge who this young man is or was? What's done is done. Show some respect for he and his family and friends and keep your insensitive comments to yourself... RIP "Poods", I didn't know you but it sounds like you were a pretty rad human being with nothing but good intentions

    1. I think people need/want to learn from this tragedy. If he was drinking then maybe if just one person reads that he died from drinking and hanging out on a dangerous cliff maybe that one person will not to that the next time they are out drinking at a cliffs location. I think that is the important part is to just get the info out there in case it could save a future life.

  14. I'm sure this was not the first time Ian had visited this spot on the cliffs. The spot he fell from was well worn indicating many kids had gone to that edge. He had probably been there many times. He felt comfortable there. My theory is, it was late, it was a warm night and he was tired and wanted to just rest peacefully before going home. He emptied his pockets so he could be comfortable lying down and quickly fell asleep. I think he rolled over in his sleep, forgetting where he was, and fell down the cliff. I think this was purely an accident that cost him his young life. My heart goes out to his mother, father, sister, grandparents and all of his devoted friends. Rest in peace young man.

  17. 2018...Just watching a Facebook show with Mike Row and his parents. I stopped watching to see how he died. Very sad but he is still living on through his parents and their foundation that came about because of his death. ROLLING FROM THE HEART is the name of the foundation.

    1. Same here, I also have a son who suffers from depression and it is so heartbreaking to listen to them attempt to describe their struggles. As a mother you want to help but nothing you say reaches them.
They are like Vincent. This world is never meant for anyone as beautiful as you. We are all just very blessed to have them as long as we do ♡♡♡
All my love to this family and may the Universe bring healing and peace ♡ Mama Janice

  22. I am sorry, I need to be anonymous. I do this for my family, and out of respect for the memory of this wonderful, gentle soul, Ian, and his family, who work through their exhaustion to try to make sense of this tragedy. Some very important and soul-affirming work is being done.

My own dear boy, Brad Hale, disappeared on October 2nd, 2016. His is a gentle soul, never known to be hurtful or mean to anyone, kind and unselfish. I know the heartbreak and internal fracture of losing my son, the ache and longing that never goes away, the way life is suddenly stripped of sense and direction. Sadly, my family has not been able to put together anything meaningful, nor a lasting legacy. Brad left behind countless friends; bandmates - a talented musician and bass player; a wife; a twin brother; a boss, in-laws, other brothers, former classmates, people he also skated with, people who he hired and managed, co-workers ... the list goes on and on.

Over a hundred people showed up to scour the hills and trails in the mountainous region above where his car was found, and where his cell phone was pinged. Law enforcement was slow to respond, where they may have found more leads or clues as to what happened, while his disappearance was still fresh. Almost two years later, no DNA has been obtained, there are no sightings, and the trail has gone cold; people still follow news on his facebook page, Missing Brad Hale, and hope for his return. We take comfort in knowing how very much Brad is valued, and he will not be forgotten.

Your family's story is inspirational story, the story of the memorial skate park (bureaucrats aside, it really is Pood's skate park) and the foundation that is helping so many young people know that they belong and are important.

There is no closure for our Brad -- our hearts are like cracked glass, and some days I look at the world through a myopic mirror, preferring to shut down and be alone. I don't know where I am going with this; I often trail off, and sometimes I think my words make no more sense than Brad's disappearance, but I wanted to reach out to you all, and especially to Pood's parents, to say I wish you the very best, from a caring spirit. Mr and Mrs Barry, by honoring your son, you are also honoring my son. Thank you. And Mike Rowe, thank you for the good you have done, by airing their story.

  23. Incredible young man to have the impact on so many in his community. Obviously shows the kind of person he was. And I see where that comes from after reading about his parents and their organization, “Rolling From the Heart”. That apple didn’t fall far from the kindness tree. Blessings to all three, Ian and his parents for making me see good is still in this world. Best of luck with your foundation and May Ian, Poods, Rest in Eternal Peace

  24. It has been 11 years and one day since my son lost his best friend in Ian "Poods" Barry. Time is meaningless when it comes to this kind of friendship held between the two, as Ian must have had with so many. I would like to honor him today and his family. What an amazing presence in my son's life Ian made, and as I can see how his family still has today with their organization "Rolling From the Heart." God bless you Ian "Poods" Barry, and your family, and the community of heart you have created with your life and love.
