Local boy makes good

In addition to representing high-density developers and defending bars serving late-night drunks, Encinitas attorney Marco Gonzalez is becoming San Diego's own Gloria Allred:
Three of Mayor Bob Filner’s biggest supporters, including former City Councilwoman Donna Frye, have called on him to resign over allegations of sexual harassment.

Frye and local attorneys Cory Briggs and Marco Gonzalez each sent letters to Filner this week asking him to step down. The trio declined to answer questions until they hold a joint news conference at 10 a.m. Thursday.

[...]

Gonzalez told KPBS he represents “multiple women” who claim sexual harassment by Filner. In his email to Filner, Gonzalez notes a recent meeting he had with the mayor to discuss his treatment of staff, particularly women.

“Unfortunately, I and numerous of my colleagues have reached the point where we do not believe your behavior will change, and thus must request that you immediately relinquish your position as mayor,” Gonzalez wrote. “To write this email was not an easy decision for any of us, but we now firmly believe resignation is the appropriate choice for you to minimize the damage to your constituency and the city.”

  1. Way to go Frye and Marco.

Its shows they are not bias. Filner is a bleeding liberal with loose hands and wallet to the union employees.

Marco is obviously a good attorney. I just hope he doesn't forget about his love for the ocean and give up on environmental efforts.

Of course its more profitable to support developers and bar owners. Its so easy to just follow the money. It is America.

I am glad its Marco representing the Bar Owners- better than some other douche bag attorney. While Marco like most people are for sale, at least Marco comes from good roots.

Marco - Just do not sell out Encinitas too quick. Their is a reason why you live here and Solana Beach and not in PB or Huntington beach.

    1. I don't agree that EVERY lawyer can be bought. For example, Everett DeLano has always been on the side of the little guy and the environment-- as far as I know. It is a hard place to be to try to fight the overwhelming special interests that have such immense financial backing and are out to take everything they can get.

I find it sad that Marco Gonzalez started out trying to protect the environment, and that now he has become part of the machinery that will ultimately destroy what he claims to support. Gonzalez, along with Barth and this council, have done at least as much damage in the short time that they have been in office as some of the previous councils did over entire terms!
There is talk of recall in the air.

    2. Not even close. They are light years better than the Stocks days with Stocks, Gaspar and Muir.

Stocks led the charge and voted in a 35% increase in pensions for every employee and council member in 2005 forever. Thats right - he voted in his own pension spike and Muir went from a $120 k pension to a $170,000 year pension in one night!

That action has caused the most harm to Encinitas in its history and greatly affects its financial health, although it did greatly help Jerome Stocks and Mark Muir's financial health!!

Jerome Stocks is the worse councilmember EVER!!! and will like stay that way forever!

  4. Hi 7:07 I have a different opinion. Is it possible Marco Gonzalez an environmental huckster?

It appeared to me that Marco had special access with the council to promote his high density developer clients at Desert Rose where he advocated density increases that residents said would destroy wetlands, clear cut mature trees and reduce quality of life while threatening resident safety.

Last night it seemed to me that Marco just walked up to the podium appearing to violate Robert Rules and seeming to take over injecting himself in the council debate. Should the rules that apply for the rest of us apply to Marco?

As for Marco representing bar owners is he actually out to generate fee's? It looks to me like all current bar owners keep all current rights they now have - only new bar owners might be impacted. If that's the case then has Marco created a need for his services where none existed?

Protect Encinitas? It is my understanding that Marco threatened to suit the city if the council didn't give his high density developer client increased densities.

Marco comes from good roots? It is my understanding that his Sister Lorraina organized the vote to elect Filner and also organizes SEIU unions. It is my understanding the SEIU unions use dues to elect candidates. I understand the sister was recently elected to the state assembly, is she in line for Mayor if Filner goes?

Marco protecting Encinitas? Someone told me Marco claims the only way to save the Cleveland National Forest is to upzone Encinitas and allow 5 story buildings. Is it possible he is pushing high density in Encinitas so he can generate fees by representing the developers building high density and then represent the bar owners who move in?

  6. So true Sculpin. I guess people have forgotten that Marco's firm did the pro bono work to help parents keep yoga in schools. Coast Law Group is one of the most ethical groups of attorneys you can find. It is not easy for Marco to go up against the San Diego Mayor he campaigned for, as did Donna Frye. However, if Filner has asexually harassed even half the women people are saying he did, I am uncomfortable with anyone who would defend what he has allegedly done. His sister, Lorena, did indeed win the 80th district assembly over the man who the UT endorsed. I am proud to know her, and she is only one of 13 mothers in the assembly. Yes, she is a union person. I happen to think unions are good. Without them, the 1% would have a field day. If you all would do your homework on Desert Rose, instead of believing tour God, Bruce and Sheila, you might quickly learn he did protect a lot of things another attorney would let pass. But, then again, you would have to find something else to rant about. Facts my friends, are important.

    5. 11:46 Pro Bono- nothings for free. Marco and the CLG tried to hop on board some free press macros the country, do gooders and social engineers under the guise of 'Environmental'-

Marco advocated destroying wetlands in our community. Marco advocated destroying and clear cutting mature trees in our community.
Marco advocated opposing the citizens right to vote (as did Scuplin)
Marco advocated high density buildings in Encinitas to destroy community character.

The complaints against Filner are similar to questions raised during the campaign - correct? So where was Marco and his cronies then ? Just saying, now suddenly it sounds like there is money to be made and who shows up? - that's right

      Delete
    6. Marco did NOTHING to mitigate the Desert Rose project or increase the buffers on the wetlands to what is required in our General Plan. The owners presented a project with 14 houses which citizens objected to, and they came back with a project with 16.

Marco did not suggest a single improvement over the plan that they presented the first or the second time. His role has simply been to threaten and intimidate the Planning Commission, the Council, the staff, and the local community members.

In contrast, he talked about what great people the developers are and how poorly he was treated by the unreasonable Olivenhain neighbors.

    7. Yes, Marco played the victim in Desert Rose - something social engineers have long used to try and shame people into feeling sorry for them. This is like his victim claim that to save the Cleveland Forest we need to destroy Encinitas Community character.

Yes, he also played the bully at Desert Rose threatening to suit the city and the hardworking taxpayers of Encinitas if he didn't get his way.

He is an opportunist, a high density for profit attorney. Marco told us to vote for Filner, while his sister organized SEIU to vote for Filner. The Filner campaign demonized his opponents. Are we suppose to trust Marco and Donna Fry's judgement after they told us 8 months ago to vote for this weasel?

It is interesting to me that now that there is money to be made in a lawsuit Marco shows up? It is sad that the people who will pay the bill on any lawsuit on this matter are likely to be San Diego taxpayers.

  10. Fact: Filner had a fiancé not a wife
Fact- Be sure you know exactly what you are talking about if you are talking about Desert Rose
Fact: The firm did it pro bono for the yoga. Do they have to do everything for free to be exempt from your contempt?
Fact-The slimiest person in the City is Glenn Sabine and the Council does nothing, not even asks to have it bid out.
Fact: Until recently Filner was not accused of sexual harassment.
i could go on, but as I stated earlier, most of you want to flame people. You have no appreciation when someone or some business helps out. I have yet to find one person on this blog that has said Thanks to Coast Law Group for the many hours of work they did for the yoga case. So, when there is an appeal, if I were an attorney at Coast Law and read this blog, I would not do it again for free. So many of you are so negative, that i have a hard time understanding how you even hold jobs, or perhaps you don't. We live in paradise and many people from all over the world come here just for what we have everyday. Go surfing and thank mother nature for the beautiful swells. Marco also fought to save Tressles, just in case you were unaware of that. Guess he should have kept his mouth shut there as well.

    1. So what you are really sayiing is that we should all give thanks to the God lead CLG for their yoga help. Ahh I don't think so. Is that what they need?? To be constantly thanked?? Too bad, that's not the real world. And if there is an appeal and CLG doesn't step up.... I don't give a shit.

As for Tressles why should I have to drive an extra distance to keep some surfers happy?? Every time he opens his mouth he gets paid. Don't be fooled, nothing is free.

    1. 2:04- You are probably right about the 4th fact. I still cannot believe Council really let him stay. He must have big time dirt on everyone at the City. What else could it possibly be. He is a mediocre lawyer at best. In one year the City of Encinitas paid him and his firm Morrison and Sabine over 1 million dollars. And, he lost half of the cases. He then goes on to have an affair with the Director of Finance, to whom he is now married and she is expecting a child. So many conflicts of interest it boggles my mind they kept him. Since most of the current Council members have this information, I wonder if any of them have our financial interests at heart, or are they just trying to add their own stamp on the City. Lisa is the best at doing that. Read her newsletter which she sends out if you want proof. SANDAG members dislike her and say she is difficult to work with, as she is arrogant and reserved. I think she is an academic narcissist if there is such a thing.

  12. Coast Law thanks for defending yoga.

  13. 3:29 PM

At the same time Coast Law was defending Jois Yoga's "right" to give $500,000 to the school district so Jois could use the children in their experiment. Would you want your child used as the guinea pig? Yes, yoga is good, but not so good when used as a front to prove that Jois yoga is the best.

  15. Gonzalez - kettle calling the pot black. Self-serving hypocrite.

  16. I read the UT today, with the photos on front. So if Filner resigns it strengthens the case for good ol Marco to reach a settlement with Filner and the city- "hey the guy resigned'! hmm, self serving?

Also, if Filner resigns does Donna Frye run for Mayor? Hmmm, or may the third person on the photo Marco's sister Lorenno runs for Mayor?............

hmm, one gets paid, the other gets elected, good business for a political family, ya think?

Who profits by forcing Filner out? Marco and his clients? Who politically gains by forcing Filner out ? Marco's sister and Donna Frye?

Add to this that the three of them told us 8 months ago that Filner was the tops, Filner was the best. The three of them told us ignore Filners weasel indiscretions, ignore Bonnie Dumanis and her complaints-

Meet the Gonzalez's- political opportunists? For profit legal opportunist?

    I am just saying

  18. It is very interesting that the Democratic Central Committee knew of Filners sexual proclivities and still ran him for Mayor. This is nothing new as far as Filner goes. So whatever sparked this must have been more recent. And yet, not one woman has stepped forward and said she was sexually harassed by Filner. Strange days indeed.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Filner didn't just start sexually harassing women after he took the office of mayor. How long has this been going on?? Filner has long been a bully, ask the tsa agent he screamed at.
