R.I.P. Kate David

From Mayor Barth's newsletter:

~ Encinitas You Need Us ~ Kate David 1947 - 2013 ~
Kate
Cancer claimed another dear friend this week.

You probably didn't know her personally but you knew her through her blog EncinitasYouNeedUs.

Kate was a strong voice for real democracy and positive social change. A true believer that one person can make a difference.

After a successful career in design in  NYC and Phoenix. Kate decided to leave the rat race behind and moved to Encinitas to be near her son.

Here she began to consciously simplify her life, living each day with purpose. She volunteered hundreds of hours at Paul Ecke Central School to develop the School in a Garden program.

I met her about five years ago and we quickly became friends. She challenged me, she listened to me and made me question everything but best of all she inspired me.

Whenever I was frustrated by "politics" she would remind me of my great good fortune. I had a chance to speak up in a world were so many have no voice at all.

Kate was my most honest critic and unwavering supporter. She made me a better person and I will miss her so very, very much.

  2. Did not know her. Why am I sad and Pathetic? Anger issues? I hope your grieving goes well. I'm guessing by Teresa's comments she was a fine lady.

  5. I did not know her, but I read and appreciated her online "column," Encinitas You Need Us. Her wish was to be anonymous; she did not need ego reinforcement through personal recognition. But her observations and sharing of facts, sharing of her perspective, affected many in our community. Kate David is a wonderful example of "playing it forward."

Encinitas does need watchdogs and whistleblowers. The examined life is worth living. Part of this ongoing examination includes questioning authority.

It may seem simple or expedient for those in a position of hierarchal authority to dismiss those of us who do question, to dismiss the questioner or the messenger. And yes, part of questioning is criticizing. But the general public and the media are what keep government entities accountable and honest.

I feel Teresa's eulogy is touching and compelling. I hope that Teresa Barth can once again look to those considered by some to be "dissidents" or "the usual suspects," a group whom our City Manager, Gus Vina, has described as being only about 20 people, for insight and advice outside of the often "incestuous" relationships, the "yes men and women," with which an elected official can become insulated by at City Hall, or within any government bureaucracy.

I hope that Teresa Barth can remember that once she was considered an activist and a dissident who "talked too much." We're all mortal. We stand humbled and sorrowed by the death of someone who gave so much of her own insight, and yes, her inspiration.

May Kate David rest in peace, beyond the suffering and turmoil of this material plane. She planted many seeds. Her words and her questioning philosophy will live on.

  7. 8:51 and 9:02 your shameless attempts to discredit someone actually leads you to dishonor the death of someone.

I suspect you are single person, most likely sent by Gus Vina and the council to try and harass an individual to remain quite on city malfeasance.

You are truly a wretched a soul.

    1. Why do you bother responding to such posts? Are you the same Anon who responds similarly to other such posts? Life is too short to get all hot and bothered about such comments - let it go.....there are better things to do with your time.....

    2. Anon 9:44- you are a delusional nuttjob . Go to Union and have a drink or 10.

  8. 9:44 thank you for your comments and your perspective, here. It's challenging, when one or two posters "get off" on name-calling and attacking others. Those kinds of abusive comments ARE meant to deter a few from posting. I admire you for your passion, and your insight. I hope you won't take the "flamer" or flamers to heart.

Unfortunately, these kinds of "trolls" come out under the cover of anonymity, because they or he (or she), if it's the same individual posting numerous times, thrive on the negative attention they are attempting to create. Their remarks are typically a projection of their own psychological states of anger, delusion, and self-derision.

These same posters, acting as anonymous bullies, are essentially what broke down Leucadia Blog, in my opinion. They are surely the reason that Kate David, in her wisdom, wished to remain anonymous, and to only present an online column, with no opportunity for others to post. A few cyberbullies will inevitably "act out," and although they may represent a small percentage, they can "ruin" a forum for everyone. I'm grateful that WC has been a good steward of Encinitas Undercover, doing his best to balance freedom of expression with thoughtful moderation of the forum he generously provides.

I realize one does become discouraged, by repeated attacks, but I'm glad that hasn't stopped you or others from sharing your perspective! I don't mind when this person or persons says they skip my posts. That's what they should do, if they don't have facts to refute, or the attention span to read my offerings, just as I skip over their comments, which I find to be dismissive, irrelevant and/or hateful.

    1. Oh please Lynn - let's make up drama where no drama exists. Name-calling flame-throwing trolls are just that - trolls. They exist only to bask in the reactions they create. Trolls don't kill blogs - people responding to trolls kill blogs. My take - don't respond to them, keep making your comments, and only engage in substantive discussions. Let it go.......

    2. Oh, please, Sculpin, I offered my comments, not in self-defense, but in appreciation of 9:44, in an attempt to encourage him or her, and to dissuade that particular commenter, from deciding to no longer participate here, after targeted name calling following his or her posts.

Why don't you stop lecturing me and others to "let it go," and let it go, yourself? I feel my discussion of internet trolls is substantive to this blog, as it has been happening here, frequently, and did negatively impact people from participating on Leucadia Blog, before.

People have a right to feel defensive when they are being directly targeted and attacked, repeatedly. We can comment on most anything we choose to, here. I certainly will not refrain from offering compassionate support to commenters who are supporting open, honest communication, and thoughtful, well-reasoned discussion.

Your statement, "Trolls don't kill blogs - people responding to trolls kill blogs." is ridiculous, in my eyes. Leucadia blog wasn't "killed." it still exists, although less people participate. Moreover, "guns don't kill people," people do," is an excuse that is used to decry effective gun regulation.

Also, cars don't kill bicyclists, having two lanes in both directions, as was designed, for North 101 in Leucadia doesn't kill people, bad drivers do. Trolls may not kill blogs, but too many troll attacks against those posting on blogs can surely lead to less people wanting to subject themselves to what they perceive to be a "toxic environment," there. And that, to me, is also something worth discussing.

    4. Lynn, you made encouraging comments for the benefit of a troll. 9:44 started with innuendo, went through to unsubstantiated claims, and finshed off with name calling. Seriously?!?!?!? Explain to me the "perspective" that you are thanking 9:44 for? Look, you bring about alot of good points. You do your homework, you go to meetings, you talk to people and ask questions - all good and all appreciated. But I have to tell you, you lose me when you start bringing in insider knowledge, and then I'm out of the room on the he said/she said stuff. Some of the conclusions are downright bizarre...but it's still all worth the read. I guarantee you one thing....don't respond to trolls (or encourage them) and they'll tire of it all.

Oh yea, why can't I lecture you? You've lectured me a few times.....and I still like roundabouts....

  11. And show some respect. This was about somebody who just passed away, but all the bad blood from the other threads spilled over. There are plenty of other threads to spoil with those unoriginal and increasingly repetitive comments. This one could/should have been spared.

    1. Thank you. That is the same point 9:44 made. Clearly a wretched troll is more interested in selfishly harassing a poster than show8ng respect for the passing of a human life.

  13. 10:50- selfish troll- own it, live with it, it's who you are.

RIP Kate, did not know you well, but you attempted to make a difference based on honesty and integrity. Did not always agree with you Kate, but I did respect your participation in the process. You did make a difference for all of us. I loved the articles on Mayor Stocks, especially J'accuse with the lizard! RIP :-)

  14. If 10:50 is a troll its likely Lword....
