The meeting is about a number of changes to the plans for the I-5 and 101 area in North County, but most of the significant changes are about the Rail Trail and parking at train stations. More information about the changes can be found here.
The question to ask at this meeting is "What does this do for Encinitas?"
ReplyDeleteThe railroad divides the community. You can't just get across it, you have to go around to one of the few crossings. And the crossings create bottlenecks, especially the underpass at Encinitas Blvd and the crossings in Leucadia and Cardiff.
The I5 also divides the community, and again the crossings are bottlenecks, especially at Encinitas Blvd.
We need to demand that SANDAG and Caltrans fix this. It will only take a few billions.

The wording has been changed that will not actually include the bike and walking areas on the NCTD property. Encinitas will absorb most of the "trail" on Vulcan and San Elijo Roads.

Rachelle Collier years ago ran on the effort to bring us at grade crossings and was denied. Now we get another expensive under-crossing that will only serve to prevent ever lowering the tracks. Solana Beach did it. Carlsbad will do it and we here get left behind while the majority of monies gets spent on the 5 corridor.
ReplyDeleteIf our reps wanted to make any real progress, this would be primary. That it has not is telling. Bar patrons get to park on private property on both sides of the track. One has to know these bar users are not being targeted for crossing the tracks. What a sell out!
Discouraging pedestrians from crossing is all well and good but to ticket them while overlooking the illegal parking with a thousand dollar fine has to be addressed. This is so unfair and such an easy mark for the revenuers.
A warning is all that should be done until this situation is remedied by lowering and covering the double tracking to come. This is only going to become worse as the train traffic doubles.
Leucadia Blvd with double tracking wtf?, Just imagine what is in our future without tunneling that one intersection.
I suppose the troll will chime in about burying the tracks will stop all train traffic. I cannot for the life of me understand where that person is coming from. Semantics???

DeleteLOSSAN and SANDAG/NCTD estimated rail trips has decreased considerably since the estimates of the 90s.
Double tracking should be discontinued.
The rails and I5 carry not only people, but also goods between San Diego and points to the North and East. The Freight traffic, as well as Amtrak and the Coaster will all benefit from double tracking.
DeleteAt one time the Encinitas Lumberyard had a siding and many of our houses are built with wood that made that trek.
The estimates included the freight trains.
DeleteAmtrak is sinking. Double tracking is obsolete and should be discontinued.
DeleteTwo words: Rail Traffic. Not only Amtrak runs on the railway. It's also used by the Coaster, and all freight trains running in and out of San Diego. Double tracking will happen. Putting your head in the sand is not an option.
DeleteMuch of the freight can go on either road or rail. Double Tracking can make rail more attractive, reducing the amount of thru truck traffic on I5.
DeleteYou're engaging in a fantasy. I used to work at NCTD. The double tracking of the entire rail corridor is coming.
DeleteOur NCTD representative is Tony Kranz. Our SANDAG representative is Lisa Shaffer. Talk to them. Make your voices heard on all things related to this.
