A 61-year-old pedestrian died after he was hit by a vehicle near an intersection in Encinitas Tuesday night, authorities said.
The man was walking west and trying to cross North El Camino Real outside of a marked crosswalk near Encinitas Boulevard around 6:35 p.m. when he was struck by a vehicle driving north on North El Camino Real, sheriff’s Deputy Michael Power said.
Pedestrian and bike death rates are way up. And as usual nothing gets done at City Hall....

I wonder when you're going to give up trying to turn folks against her. I wonder when you're going to figure out that rolling heads and low morale and record numbers of people quitting at city hall is actually celebrated by your average resident. It is viewed as a sign that Karen is doing her job.

Along that section of El Camino Real the lanes were narrowed.
DeleteThe lanes were narrowed along El Camino Real. The driver in each lane no longer has any visible warning of a person in the next lane until the person appears in front of the car. The cars are crowded closer together.

The speed limit along the commercial area of El Camino Real is 35 mph.

News flash: the world contains risks. Accept personal accountability and make decisions accordingly. Accept consequences. Shit happens.
Life if beautiful. Cherish it. If you love people, tell them—every day.
Don’t live in fear. Take risks. Make yourself uncomfortable. Bleed. Suffer. Learn. Enjoy. Relax. Experience the whole range of human emotions and experiences.
If you want to cross a road at night in a rain storm, do it. But understand the risks, and be as careful as you can.

DeleteThere is a huge disconnect between the stated objectives of making Encinitas a place for alternative forms of transportation and the level of safety that would allow for people to walk or bike as their primary mode.
The push for high-density living touts forcing people to walk and ride bikes because there will be reduced parking (according to Lisa Shaffer).
We already have reached an unacceptable level of safety for pedestrians and bikers. I will vote NO on any Housing Element that they put on the ballot since any increases will cause MORE casualties to bikers and walkers.
I have two comments for 6:40.
DeleteFirst, according to CA law, pedestrians and bikers have right of way.
Second, a 61-year-old man is not an "old man." That is pretty close to the average age of most people in Encinitas. As our population continues to age, we need to think about more ways to prevent these kinds of accidents.

There were crosswalks within 200 yards in either direction from where this unfortunate soul passed. Should we have them every 50 ft? 20 ft?
9:21 where did you study law? pedestrians have the right of way in all conditions. They do not have a right of way when jaywalking.

DeleteThe pedestrian may have jaywalked, but the city made it more difficult for the driver to see the pedestrian by narrowing the lanes.

ReplyDeleteHas anybody thought about the person that hit the guy? They were following the "rules" and hit a guy running/walking in front of them. I feel bad for the poor person who hit him. No citation was reported issued. The poor person driving the car has to live with that! How would YOU feel?

ReplyDeleteThere is a bus stop in the middle of the block on both the east and west sides of El Camino Real. City is responsible for that placement and invites people to jaywalk to the bus stop.
