Planning Commissioner Jody Hubbard to run for Council

Coast News:
Encinitas Planning Commissioner Jody Hubbard tossed her hat into the City Council ring, announcing her decision on June 10 through a campaign launch party. Hubbard will vie for District 3, which represents constituents in Cardiff and part of New Encinitas.

Mark Muir currently occupies the seat and has not publicly stated whether he will run for re-election in November. No other District 3 candidates have emerged yet.

[...]

Hubbard has been endorsed by Teresa Barth, former mayor of Encinitas, and by Lisa Shaffer, former deputy mayor.

  1. I liked what I read until I reached the last line and saw that Teresa and Lisa had endorced her.

  2. Watch her in action on the PC and you'll like her even less. But I agree: those endorsements alone are a huge red flag.

  3. OMG, has Jody learned nothing from Catherines' mistake in taking counsel from both of these has beens?

She is now doomed to fail, and it didn't have to be.

This community wants genuine change. Barth and Shaffer are irrelevant and duly reviled with the exception of a minority few. They both stabbed their former supporters in the back and this betrayal will not be forgiven or forgotten.

I hope she can make better use of her time on the Planning Commission to wake the f up for the next couple of years. Maybe then, she will be worthy of the publics trust. Maybe.

  4. On the Planning Commission for five months, now she's running for council. On the PC, she sounds opinionated but uninformed. The Shaffer and Barth endorsements are more a minus than a plus.

  5. JUST LOOK AT HER BACKGROUND AND VOTES ON THE PLANNING COMMISSION. SHE WORKED FOR A DEVELOPER FOR YEARS AND SUPPORTS HIGH-DENSITY RESIDENTAL PROJECTS IN OUR NEIGHBORHOODS. NO WAY!!! SOMEBODY ELSE HAS TO RUN...

  6. She pushed hard for 37 feet for the affordable housing, saying "I think it would be nice to have a fourth floor deck that you can step out of an elevator onto."

She had to be reminded that this is for affordable housing, the state doesn't require it, and voters would reject it. She still insisted "I think it would be nice."

On another issue, O'Grady had to tell her that what she was proposing violated code. She looked surprised at the notion that she had to apply code and had to be reminded repeatedly that it existed.

She talks about what she would like, not what the code and law dictate. It would be funny if she weren't making decisions for the rest of us.

    1. That sounds funny peculiar. A 4th floor deck and an elevator, this in what should be affordable housing in a community known to prefer 30 feet for views over the top of nearby homes.

    2. It is peculiar. In the tradition of Barth/Shaffer/Blakespear, she inserts her personal preferences into opinions and decisions that affect us all. She seems particular dense in understanding or even simply remembering she needs to apply code and the law.

She has been on the commission a few months and already discounts public input.

One speaker on the HEU said the difference between 33' and 37' would mean she and her neighbors would be looking at a wall of buildings up against their back yard fences. When Hubbard continued pushing for 37', another commissioner reminded Hubbard of the resident's comments. She merely shrugged. That attitude is all too familiar already on council, we don't need any more of it.

Please, let's not give her any more decision-making power than she has already. She would be a disaster. She's a bad combination of knowing what's best for the rest of us, pushing what she likes personally, and ignoring the rules.

  7. Those endorsements don't help.

  8. I know Jody and she'd be a disaster on the council. If she actually runs, I will come out with all the stuff that even her good friends will fear or at least laugh at!

    1. Oh God - another catastrophe coming. Maybe spill the beans now and she'll be dissuaded to even attempt a run at the council.

    2. Agree, 9:27. Can't be too careful - Shaffer and Barth somehow still have tiny pockets of support in this town and you can bet both are working good and hard, as we write, on Hubbard's behalf.

Blakespear too is crowing about Hubbard running.

    1. Barth and Shaffer ended up voting exactly the same way as Stocks did and would have on most issues. They are by far worse than Stocks since they were users who pretended to be different. Also, Stocks would sometimes listen to residents and vote with them.

      When?

  13. Stocks listened to citizens concerns about the Barth-let General Plan update which paid consultants MIG and their contractors $1.6 million dollars.

Stocks also voted against the original plan to develop the property across the street from SDA next to Park Place when they wanted to put over 200 houses on the site. It later came back with those huge houses with the the agressively peaked roofs, but it was better than the original plan.

He did other harmful things as mayor, but in those 2 cases he voted with some of the residents.

  14. I've watch Jody on the Planning Commission. Not smart (barely above dumb) and she's a pond for the developers.

  15. Hubbard has been on the Planning Commission for 5 minutes and is already running for City Council. Sounds like Tasha 2.0 – or is it Tasha 3.0, since Tasha’s done it twice now? Vote NO for any city official who runs for higher office before they’ve complete their first year – or 4 months for Hubbard – in the office they were elected/appointed to.

  17. With announced backers like Lisa and Teresa, that alone shows Jody is not the right person for the job.

New blood is needed, but not when it comes with baggage like that.

Sorry , not sorry Jody. Fatal move. Enjoy the rest of your time on the Planning Commission. You are not going anywhere else. At least you will have to wise up if you choose to do so.
