CITY OF ENCINITAS COULD BE ENDING SURFING MADONNA EVENTS & SURF CAMPS FOR SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN
We know many of you have been emailing us and wondering why the Surfing Madonna Beach Run registration isn’t open yet for 2020. We have kept quiet about it with respect to our City Council, however, we can no longer remain silent.
The problem stemmed from us catching the city on a “clerical error” last October that led to Surfing Madonna getting over billed on our lifeguard fees by thousands of dollars. We tried multiple times to get the fees resolved, but to no avail. We asked the City of Encinitas Parks & Recreation Dept to remove our events (Surfing Madonna Beach Run & Encinitas Half Marathon) from the city events calendar, if the lifeguard fees couldn’t be corrected. Through a public records request and a letter from a lawyer, the fees were then corrected and we received an apology letter, but now we are no longer approved for future events.
Our last event could be the upcoming Encinitas Half Marathon & 5K on March 29th. Jennifer Campbell (Parks Director) said they have new policies and procedures for special events that will be put in place, however, these new policies could end the Surfing Madonna Events and nonprofit. They will not share any details with us.

ReplyDeleteI don't care at all about narcissistic running races (paying $40 for a look-at-me I did a half marathon t-shirt) but I take deep offense at the depiction of our Mexican patron Saint, la Virgen De Guadaloupe being depicted as a selfish surfer and being prosituted to serve the environmental fascists agenda. If we were anywhere else, this mural would be destroyed in an instant for religious insensitivity. Good riddance to this degenerate 'art' and closure of our roads for the narcissistic running/tri crowd.

DeleteRumor has it that the city clouncil has contracted a transvestite to create a surfing Allah mural flag and run it up the flagpole at the city building. People close to the situation were heard murmuring "it's only fair" while anonymous sources were heard saying "well sonafabeach"

DeleteThe lack of communication or explanation is so disrespectful. I can't imagine the frustration after doing so much good for the community over the years. My son benefits from the special needs surf camps that SMOP organizes and i can attest to the good that this group does every year. Someone from the City owes them a phone call or email at the very least..
ReplyDeleteThe Surfing Madonna people are just unaware of the situation. Blanco Nightmare was trying to extort the city for a portion of the entry fees. The FBI was investigating, and raided a house over by Oakcrest on Monday.

Maybe you should compare that charity with others and see how much they contribute/keep for themselves. Think you'd change your tune.

Komen is ranked 3-star overall and receives a significant amount of money as contributions, not just race entries. They also pay out over $22M (million) in salaries. Not really a fair comparison. Since charity navigator doesn't rate SMOP, how do you arrive at "much better". Please provide information, not opinion.

DeleteSurfing Madonna spent more than 30% on top 2 people's salaries alone.
Komen's total income includes tax-free donations to the tune of several millions of dollars. SMOP derives 99% of its income from race entry fees. That affects the comparision of percentages. Komen's executive makes twice what SMOP does, and then they have $22M additional in other salaries. I'll take SMOP any day (and twice on race day!).

DeleteNot sure. Maybe we could have had a town council like RSF or La Jolla. But I doubt it. The developers would have eaten the town alive and we would look and feel like downtown Oside.
Deletethis is only one side of the story. There's some shady stuff going on regarding funds and salaries in the Surfing Madonna charity. Google the recent Union Tribune article a few weeks ago. And as soon as that article hit, Bob Nichols starts posting all over facebook, especially in Encinitas Votes, about how he is mistreated by the city. Seems like he's loudly trying to deflect attention and scrutiny away from himself. And perhaps the city is rightly distancing themselves from him because of his attitude, behavior, tactics, and this article and scrutiny.
