Turney responds to Michael Verdu hit piece

Facebook:
Lies are what you resort to when you can't or won't discuss the issues. It's where you go when you're on the wrong side of too many issues.

I want to set the record straight on these lies:

    2. Verdu is using the tactics of Ken Moser. I hope you're proud Mr. Verdu for using Republican dirty tricks.

  2. Hi. It's the infamous Mike Verdu. My wife and I have a thick skin after this and other local fights. Cardiff rail trail opponents vandalized our home at the height of that battle and then a few weeks later left a dead squirrel draped over our gate; those were fun times indeed. So we've had our rough and tumble introduction to the sharp-elbowed politics in this little city. I normally let the anonymous comments here fly by without responding.

However, I take issue with the way @Encinitas Undercover framed up this particular post.

Two of the so-called "lies" Susan cites came from some other mailer (or mailers) - not from ours. We did not say anything about seawalls or climate action. So - if you're going to associate something with me, make sure it's at least accurate. You could say "Susan tries to rebut claims made in recent mailers". But these are not exclusively my claims.

For the other two so-called "lies" which did appear on our mailer (which aren't lies at all):

    1. On the topic of her housing plan, Susan is not telling the truth under her headline "TRUTH". Her plan is a fantasy, a simplistic pie-in-the-sky solution which basically amounts to adding 5% to our affordable housing percentages and then locking property owners out of the meetings to create the plan. Nice. If it was that easy, don't you think someone would have tried this?

It's not that easy. And it's disingenuous to claim it would be viable just because someone on the planning commission supports it. This is a political calculation - and Susan is getting it wrong.

Her plan will fail at the ballot box for the same reasons that Measuress U and T failed. A 5% increase in the affordable housing requirement is not magic pixie dust that will suddenly make a housing element palatable in a Prop A vote. Property owners who object to the increased % and neighbors of up-zoned parcels will fight like demons during election season... and there is no natural constituency in favor of a housing element so the flood of impassioned mailers, ads, emails, social media posts, and PR stunts from opponents will be met with silence. That's what happened before with U and T. It's naive to think Susan's magical 5% is the answer. It's more complicated than that. She's going to land us back in hot water with the state, which means many more millions of dollars in legal fees and lost grants.

As for blaming the mayor and Council for the sticky mess we're in, that's funny because Susan helped make the mess. She's as much or more to blame for the millions we've already spent as the mayor and Council.

    2. On the matter of FPPC violations: Susan can dance around the FPPC violations as much as she wants but they're a matter of court record. Susan may think missing filing deadlines and mis-identifying the name of her special interest PAC in ads are trivial, but she was tagged for it and admitted to it. Voters should make up their own minds about whether or not she's ready to run a city in a litigation happy state.

Her "TRUTH" isn't so much the truth. It's her opinion. And on the subject of housing, we think her opinion is wrong and will get us into more trouble.

    2. Just moved here? WTF? That's another misleading meme right from Julie herself (she repeated it recently in a video). My wife and I have lived her for 9 years. How long does it take to be able to have a legitimate opinion in this town? I think 9 years is enough.

    4. Mike - I appreciate you posting as you have. Thank you.
Here in Leucadia, homeowners have no traction with this administration.
From beach access to steetscape to the monstrosity built on the bluff at La Costa, the interests of the people living here have been dismissed. Blakespear has clearly shown that she does not care about homeowners / residents in this part of town.
I hope she is gone. I voted for that outcome.

    5. Re the hotel, ask Pam Slater Price, who approved the project decades ago.

Current council has nothing to do with it.

      Delete
    6. 11:17 - sorry - your statement is absurd. The current council could have contested the project. It was clearly green-lighted, ram-rodded. Marriott dollars.. There is no other coastal city in CA that is so beholden to developers and willing to destroy natural coast line as Encinitas - this is not legacy, this is current council - these people appear to be co-opted by the $.

    7. 9 years is not long enough. You remind me of my neighbor from Huntington Beach who moved from their because they hated the crowds, but then wondered why the citizens do not support 5 story condos in town. You have to wonder how some people get by in life. I guess you invent video games, thats how.

I hope you move back to SF or LA where it sounds like you belong.

Blakespear has made a major dent in Encinitas's character. Shame.

      - Proud NIMBY for life whos purpose is to preserve Encinitas character as much as possible.

  4. FPPC was a “nothingburger” and you know it. The Mayor has given developers a red carpet, there has been no real try at housing numbers and the 5% is doable. The Mayor a willing pawn and you seem to have development interest as well.

  5. Mike Verdu, was it you or Marco's PAC that paid for the FAKE COP endorsement for Mayor Blakespear? The Sheriff's Officers actually endorsed Julie Thunder! Please answer this one question for me. Did your PAC lie or did Marco Gonzales PAC lied? Please answer this question!

  10. Verdu has no credibility. Hes a 9 year newbee, trying to change Encinitas to is SF crowded homeless promoting city roots. Yuck. Please leave.

  11. And take Mr and Ms. Blakespear-Gonzales with you!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Mr. Verdu, I'm curious what your motivation is since you've invested so much time and money into this.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Verdu never quite gets his facts straight. This is what happens when you don't pay attention then suddenly think you're going to explain it to those who have been.

Verdu go study up on your own and stop getting your tangled facts from your candidate. If you want people to think you're clever, you're blowing it.

    ReplyDelete
  14. After 9 years we'd think you'd know more, Mike. If you want to claim you've been here "long enough," you are somehow incredibly clueless about Encinitas. So what's your deal, really?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Just a thought, maybe Verdu owns a sign business. Have you seen his place on San Elijo that has dozens of political signs plastered to the house and the decks. Mostly Blakespear but all of the other libs are represented. I'm starting to think that 8:04 has a point. Turn Encinitas into San Francisco where it's A OK to poop on the sidewalks and leave you'r used needles where they drop.

  16. Dude stuck his neck out. Don't agree w him on multiple issues/policies but give credit.

The whole screwing w his property is just wrong.

FWIW I attended the April freeddom rally and declined the idea of going to Mayor's house. Not my cup of tea however if you are an electrd leader and basically say FU yo constituents in the name of self serving greed you open yourself up plain and simple.

The cordial aspect of politics is gone forever. Its a fight to the death now.

Further it's childish and ignorant claiming its orange man's fault.

His predecessor was an affable chap but was the divider in chief.

After Trump leaves in 2024 hopefully things get more reasonable.

    Doubtful.

Fight to the death or give up the ghost.

  17. If Turney loses which I hope is not the case (she our house's two votes), its because she listed Crazy Eyes as a supporter. Crazy Eyes and the Lword are they most illogical creatures in Encinitas. I'm shocked they are not homeless. Bad call to tie yourself to that nutcase. At least she didn't list the Lword.

  22. I don't know Michael Verdu personally, but I know of him since he is a noteworthy presence when it comes to Encinitas politics and issues. I am actually in agreement with him on most issues. But I have some issues with his approach. I hope that Michael reads my remarks and reflects on how he comes across to others. He appears to have some trouble "reading the room." He comes across as boastful about his career/financial success, he seems to believe that his worldview matters more than that of others, and he does a very poor job of conveying exactly why he is spending so much of his time and effort supporting certain issues and candidates in Encinitas. Michael, I can assure you that you would have more of an impact on local politics if you would change your style. You come across as someone who thinks that your opinion matters more than that of others because you have been fortunate in your career. Not an effective look for someone who wants to have influence locally. I wish you luck, as our politics are in alignment, but I think that you need to make some real changes in your approach.

    1. He also takes a very passive-aggressive approach. He puts out the most sensational mailers, imitating the absurd Margo, then says "oh let me explain myself." He's not fooling anyone with his single-player good cop/bad cop routine.

He throws out nasty barbs on Encinitas Votes then takes 20 paragraphs (for real) to "explain" himself. No one's buying his fake concern.

He's concerned only about himself and his supersized ego. After throwing out the worst trash slogans, he came back to ask "Have I gone too far?" He doesn't care that he did - he knows he did - he only cares that he may have looked bad for it. Poor impulse control and even worse judgement. Not only in writing, but in choice of candidate to back.

    1. So EU calls a mailer a “hit piece,” and you suggest going after the personal lives of private citizens?

Y’all really need to decide if you are victims or attackers.

Pick one and stick with it. The rest of us are getting dizzy.

      Delete
    2. These "private individuals" have made themselves quite public. Verdus have been barfing all over several Facebook sites for months. They are attackers who play a strange game of attacker/attacked.

If you've followed their antics at all you shouldn't be getting dizzy.

  25. To add to the weirdness the wife makes juvenile posts about Blakespear opponents but blocks the very people she's posting about.

Having to sneak around and buy an election should have been their first clue they're backing the wrong candidates.

  26. Verdu just vomited more verbiose nonsense on EV:

"We need to live together in peace. We all love this city; we just have different ideas of how to solve its problems and take the community forward. On November 4, I will extend an olive branch to all of you."

On November 4 I personally will be turning my back on his BS olive branch. He spews the most disgusting lies then pretends he has a conscience?

Not buying it, Mikey - and I'm not alone. You showed your true colors, you know where you can stick your olive branch.
