City cleans up homeless camp after fatal overdose

Last week’s fatal overdose seems to have spurred the city into action in clearing out a homeless camp by the freeway south of Encinitas Boulevard that had been there for months.

It’s a shame someone has to die before the city does anything about the homeless.

  1. Hold the fort here. What does some fool overdosing on dope have to do with cleaning out an encampment of losers? The two have nothing in common. The encampment should have NEVER been allowed to be set up. The overdose was just a side note with the topper of death.

  2. The City never lets a death or lawsuits regarding the death deter its path forward.

Take N. Coast Hwy 101 for example- many people have been mowed down due to no bikelane in the southbound direction and the City has just paid out $11,000,000.00 because of of their liability in knowing about the hazard, yet they keep the same existing hazard in place for yet the next person to get mowed down.

The massive lawsuits will continue to drop and drain the City's tax base. The next one will be Dr. Worley (RIP) https://thecoastnews.com/cyclists-death-inspires-bike-safety-advocates-in-encinitas/#:~:text=ENCINITAS%20%E2%80%94%20A%20bicycle%20adorned%20with,fight%20to%20cure%20cystic%20fibrosis

after this one, then many of the S Hwy 101 claimants, and then the coming claimants from forthcoming people mowed down on the N. Coast Hwy 101 which still has no bicycle lanes on a stretch of road that is along the 2nd most active bicycle routes in the county. How can our leadership be this bad?

Regarding the homeless camps, now wait for the City sanctioned tent city near a park or street near you. BIAspear is feeling left out that we do not have one yet, so one is not far off. :(

  3. Geez back with your old fabrications "many people have been mowed down." Liar.

The mayor did go wacko over pal Walker's accident and went on a striping and bollarding rampage, over the objections of cycling groups. It took the recent death on Leucadia Blvd. to get the city to rip out Blakespear's "improvement." Talk about an admission of guilt. Can't wait to see that payout. Although the guy isn't a personal friend of Blakespear so maybe he won't get the bonus Walker did.

  4. Oh geez 1:35 and 9:16am I am so sorry. I seems you do not like the verb mowed. Let me just describe it a different way then-

she was hit from behind by a truck headed southbound near Phoebe Street intersection in front of the Leucadia Post Office causing - Walker suffered multiple injuries — traumatic brain injury, fractured skull, spinal and facial fractures, nine broken ribs, a broken clavicle and sacrum, subdural hematoma and impaired mobility and cognition — and was placed into a medically-induced coma.

Wow. That doesn't seem that bad does it? Nothing like being mowed down.

How about the one with Stephanie Berger? riding her bike on North Coast Highway 101 near Basil Street in what is called a sharrow -- a lane designed to be shared by cyclists and drivers.

A Mercedes C series struck Berger and fled the scene, Stephanie suffered a serious brain injury and has undergone a number of surgeries, family members said. A piece of her skull was removed in an effort to minimize swelling and she remains in a medically-induced coma.

Wow, that seems like another fun one doesn't it? Is severe head trauma serious?

How about Dr. Jennings Worley? He sounded like a really nice guy. So sad. https://www.sandiegoreader.com/news/2021/mar/08/stringers-san-diego-bike-lanes-deadly/

You can call it what you like, but it doesn't change the carnage on the roadways that is happening in Encinitas and the hazardous conditions still exists today. These are known hazards and we can expect more blood on the roads, suffering for residents, and payouts in lawsuits.

This is what you call a lose- lose situation.... were everyone loses because of poor City leadership.

    1. 3:38 You have made your point over and over and over again. Enough already! If you want to be truthful and persuasive, use the correct language.

"Mowed down" conveys intent. None of the drivers intended to collide with the bicyclists. The crashes were accidents.

And you're ignoring that the same road conditions exist on just about every other highway in the city. They're no different from Leucadia 101 and Leucadia Boulevard.

Wherever vehicles mingle, whether they're cars, trucks, motorcycles, bicycles, golf carts or whatever, there will be accidents. And the operators of the smaller vehicles will always come out worse off than the operators of the bigger vehicles.

Those are the facts of the matter, and you persist in ignoring them.

      Delete
    2. Your facts of the matter are wrong.

The true fact of the matter is most major streets have bicycle lanes next to them like north bound Hwy101 on N.Coast hwy101, leucadia blvd., Encinitas Blvd. Saate Fe Ave,, El Camino Real, and Hwy 101 throughout Carlsbad, yet through Leucadia N. Hwy 101 does not have a bicycle lane and that is why people keep gettting mowed down. God out there with your kids and ride in that sharrow lane and tell us how safe you feel moron.

The existing hazard is why the City had to pay $11,000,000 for the first person who got mowed down and more to come. Beside maimed Stephanie and dead Dr. Worley, the City has the 24 and counting crashes in Cardiff to address. https://www.sandiegoreader.com/news/2021/mar/08/stringers-san-diego-bike-lanes-deadly/

What until someone get mowed down on S. Coast Hwy 101 do to the City removing the bicycle lanes. That issue has been documented well by the web site dedicated to trying to get the City to fix their mistake.

When the person is mowed down, the City will be losing over $20,000,000 per death on that stretch do to the City and everyone else knowing about the hazardous condition.

      Delete
    3. No bicycle lanes through downtown Encinitas. Sharrows between Cardiff and Solana Beach. Dr. Worley died on Leucadia Blvd where there is a bicycle lane.

The point is accidents will continue, unfortunately.

      Nobody was "mowed down."

"God out there"? What does that mean? "Do to the City"? Let's suppose you mean "due to."

Nobody can argue with your ignorance or open your closed mind, so go ahead and keep posting your rants. That seems to give you some relief.

      Delete
    4. No Shit accidents will continue and the City will continue to the sued for negligence for not addressing the known hazard. My point is they should address the known hazard like they did in the north bound direction.

If they installed a bike lane in the southbound direction, people would not continue to get mowed down on that stretch of road and the millions of dollars not spend on lawsuit payouts could be used for many other needed projects.

The current situation is really bad and everyone knows it.

I call that the child was mowed down. You can call it what you want but there is more mowing to be had considering the same conditions exist today with no bicycle lane on the second busiest bicycle corridor in the nation.

I did not care what you call it. More blood and taxpayer payouts are in the future of that deathtrap.

  5. Most believe Walker flew down Phoebe, cut across the post office parking lot, and never looked twice. Pitch black, dark clothing, no lights on her bike according to testimony given the sheriff by a guy who arrived within two minutes of the crash by his estimation. Driver never cited. Sheriff's report sat on by the mayor. Give us all a break.

If Walker had stopped at the bottom of Phoebe and looked left, she would have seen the truck and not thrown herself out in front of it. Stands to reason she didn't stop at the stop sign. That $11M was a pal payout, pure and simple.

You cite three stories, Walker's assumed to be self-induced and you call that "many mowed." Three stories, one self-inflicted, and it becomes "many" in your head. Way to lose credibility.

  11. Mowing down cyclists is charley boys mantra. His intention has always been to ultimately profit handsomely off the steetscam. He will. That is not debatable.

His motivation has never been about anything else in supporting this disaster in the making. It has always been about profiting off of a project that was never allowed to be voted on by the residents.

The few vocal supporters were always in the minority. Even the majority of business owners on the 101 were against this plan.

Charley boy was known to harass certain business owners who disagreed, and thereby called to question his profiteering attempts to use the streetscam project to his own personal advantage.

Mowing down cyclists is always a clear indication of the source.

Roberta got paid handsomely for her lack of responsibility in riding when and how she did on that dark morning.

    Shame on her.

Shame on Catherine for ultimately causing us taxpayers to cover Roberta's lack of responsibility for her behavior on that fateful morning.

We have all been scammed out of $11 million of our tax dollars that could have been better used elsewhere.

  13. I love that our own dumbass Lword admits that the streetscape would be wildly successful at meeting its goals, yet she opposes it because she is concerned about the increased parking pressure on North Court where she currently lives.

"His intention has always been to ultimately profit handsomely off the steetscam. He will. That is not debatable".

Well there you have it. If the streetscape was horrible for the area and made it worse, the surrounding property values would go down. But that is not the case as you have seen in both downtown streetscape and birdrock La Jolla. The streetscape make the corridor more walkable and safe and hence property values sky rocket because more people want to live their and visit there.

All you need to do is review the charts of home and business prices, pre and post walkable streetscapes and you will see the results.

So what we really have here is old curmudgeon that lay in bead with their blinds closed all day do not want Leucadia to be safe and walkable or biking. They prefer to drive everywhere and want to keep it unsafe and crappy to keep visitors away.

  17. WC- Please start a new post regarding https://coaster-rail-to-trail.org/

This is by far the best idea regarding the NCTD right-of-way to date.

    EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Even before the pandemic, Coaster ridership numbers were very low and in multi-year decline, with many trains running nearly empty.

The coronavirus crisis caused rider volumes to plunge an additional 90%+, making for an even more dire financial and future outlook.

Rail freight volume is miniscule, account for only 0.5% of total freight volume in San Diego County. The other 99%+ of freight occurs on the highways.

The train creates serious conflict and many social negatives including accidents, noise, barriers, trenches, and fences that block coastal access and lead to divided cities and poor urban design.

Erosion of the bluffs could cause catastrophic failure. Rerouting the tracks is not practical because it would cost billions and create serious environmental problems.

California's high speed rail project has encountered significant problems, leading to tens of billions in added cost and years to the projected timeline. It's a cautionary tale.

Technology advances in autonomous electric vehicles, ride-hailing, and solar energy are set to substantially change transportation in the future, creating dynamic and personalized mass transit on the roads and highways, further limiting benefits from fixed line rail.

The Rails-to-Trails Conservancy has inspired many successful rail conversion projects across the nation. A trail here could be remarkable and create billions of dollars in increased economic value.

We request that SANDAG conduct an analysis that compares the tracks vs. the trail concept, both today and in light of coming technology changes.

    Thanka,

    -Peace

      Delete
    2. The high speed rail is in a partial construction mode, but seriously delayed due to land appropriation and budgetary concerns. It is years off schedule and will never be able to be self-sustaining. It is rationalized that it will promote economic activity in the boondocks area where this partial leg is going in - farm workers and chickens will be able to speed to their destinations at taxpayers' huge expense (if it is ever completed).
