Carpet-bagging Blakespear crony given influential housing position

From the Inbox:

Mali Woods-Drake is one of two "Project Planners" on the city's Housing Acceleration Plan on next week's Consent Calendar.  Tasked with spending $310,000 in grant money, she will work to change city code with a "major area of area of focus to attain a legally compliant Housing Element."  Would love to know her qualifications other than she can be counted on to continue the mayor's attack on Prop A: MetaViewer.php (granicus.com).  Mali bizarrely blames Goodson [the huge Olivenhain condo development] on Prop A, not the council that put it on the map, and is getting her facts from who knows what source.  This is the latest mayoral appointment in a string that puts Mali, someone severely undereducated in Encinitas, its history, and its citizens, into yet another important position of influence.

  1. That's not the only area Mali WD has influence... She is now on the Pacific View Board of Directors and is the Vice President. https://www.pacificviewacademyarts.org/eacea-team/ (accept to get past security wall, it's harmless)

  2. I see no actual leadership ability here. She and Marco Gonzalez are tearing our city apart through unsupported accusations of racism and a plethora of misinformation that seems to be coming from the BIA. In both cases, they appear to be out for their own interests when racism is a serious issue that most people actually care about. This is a new low in Encinitas.

  3. The same Mali who rants about being the future of Encinitas and the world? Who claims we're all racists and she's lived in Encinitas for 10 years? The same Mali who's having a house built (and brags about it), drives a Tesla and has really lived in Encinitas less than 3 years? Wow, she's come quite far under Blakespear's wing. Hopefully when we kick Blakespear to the curb, Mali will crawl back to wear she emerged from. Hateful woman!

  14. People have wondered why she claims she is unable to buy a house. Maybe the key is her credit rating. If true, the history of legal issues should have excluded her from the job she currently has if she reported it fairly. The members of her union need to be made aware that she could pose a risk to the credibility of their union. Many citizens of Encinitas don't seem to care for her representation of us.

    2. 2:18 - I'm just calling out what a bunch of pathetic shitheads there are on this blog. None of this coordinated attack is relevant to work being done in the city by Mali or anyone on her side. The personal attacks reflect weakness on the issues. Are you telling me none of you have ever had a speeding ticket in the last 20 years? This blog is for small minded, scared, racists who apparently can't win their issues in public, so they come here to spread hate. You make Encinitas worse.

      Delete
    3. It is a rare person who does not have some sort of traffic violation on record. The issue here is the lack of responsibility if she didn't pay the ticket or even show up in court to ask for leniency or a structured payment plan. This did not happen only once but appears to be a pattern with Mali.

    2. So how is it the fault of racist/elitist Encinitas taxpayers that she is unable buy a house in Leucadia? It seems the wrong set of rewards when many people sacrifice and are protective of their credit ratings and work history in order to be considered a good risk to buy a house. How can a person with this record represent law-abiding citizens?

  17. This is pathetic. What did this person do to piss you off SO much? I can understand annoyance or a bit pissed off, but this is over the top. Someone, or several someones, appear to have personal or business issues. Reslove it privately, or you're lame bullies with grudges, and nothing more. Mentioning a speeding ticket (over 70? Wow) is beyond petty and jr. high school mentality.

    1. Traffic tickets and poor money habits are sometimes indicative of other problems like substance abuse for example. MWD is the one who has preemptively attacked Encinitas residents as racist and has blamed people living here for her inability to buy a house. She is unqualified to manage taxpayers' dollars and is not representative of most people who live here.

    3. 6:04 Mali has posted extensively on social media about her history with drug abuse and the ones she's on currently.

On the one hand good for her for telling her story. On the other she clearly was recruited to Encinitas so she and the mayor could wash one another's hands. Nothing else explains her arrival and immediate adoption of the mayor's and Gonzalez's attacks on citizens, right? All in the name of "equity" of course.

  20. How is this unqualified friend of Blakespear getting all these important appointments? This lack of proper job vetting is an abuse of power on the Mayor's part and shows very poor judgment. Looks like Blakespear wants her lackeys in place to rubber stamp her opinions. Something stinks in City Hall.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Obviously, Mali did not come from a background where she inherited a house or could get support from parents to help her buy one. I get that. However, there are a lot of other people in this city who were similarly disadvantaged and found ways to earn more money, save money, and pay their bills on time, and who avoided getting tickets so that they could qualify for a mortgage. Ms. Woods Drake appears to be flighty and unable to face the consequences of her actions. She seems impulsive and easily manipulated into becoming the mouthpiece for the building industry--perhaps in hopes of a favor in return. A person with this much poor judgement and such a lack of relevant experience make her unqualified for the important roles that she has been assigned. I have nothing against her as a person, but that does not mean that she is qualified to represent us in the important positions that she has been given. She seems to be focused on the titles or her perception of the prestige of her titles without demonstrating any ability to do the jobs.

  22. @7:59 This is clearly part of a coordinated attack. A group of unrelated people don't start attacking an individual in the same week, in the same way, without communication & planning. 24. 9:48 aka Rip Van Winkle, turn your attention to a three-month old deep dive into Woods-Drake on EG:

Who Is Mali Woods-Drake and Why Are Locals Talking About Her?

As far as Google knows, Mali Woods-Drake first came to prominence in Encinitas as an organizer of Black Lives Matter protests following the murder of George Floyd in late May 2020.

In late April 2021, the City Council chose Woods-Drake as one of eight members of the Encinitas Equity Committee, created by the council the previous February. The city’s statement:

“The purpose of the Encinitas Equity Committee is to help the City of Encinitas and Encinitas community create safe, healthy, accessible, and inclusive opportunities for everyone who lives, works and visits Encinitas. The committee will provide the forum for a diverse mix of voices to provide suggestions to the City of Encinitas to help plan, prioritize, manage and build projects and programs; frame how we work with our communities and public safety personnel; define how we recruit and develop our employees; guide our efforts to compile and interpret data and set up expectations for stakeholders and sub-contractors that work with us.”

How the committee, which includes Mayor Catherine Blakespear and Councilwoman Kellie Hinze, will accomplish the purpose is not clear.

Note that the Encinitas Equity Committee and Encinitas4Equality (E4E) are separate entities. E4E is a private organization of which Woods-Drake is a director. It maintains a studio and retail location at 414 N. Coast Highway 101 in Leucadia.

At an indeterminate point in the timeline, Woods-Drake was appointed board vice president of the Pacific View Academy of Arts, also known as EACEA, although nobody can remember what that abbreviation stands for.

Woods-Drake is a senior coordinator at the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). It’s been alleged that SEIU owns Mayor Blakespear.

Woods-Drake is a graduate of Bloomfield College in Bloomfield, New Jersey. The college’s statement:

“Bloomfield College is committed to enabling students, particularly those who have been historically excluded from higher education, to realize their intellectual and personal goals. The College’s mission is to prepare students to attain academic, personal, and professional excellence in a multicultural and global society. Bloomfield College is the only 4-year predominately Black and Hispanic serving institution in NJ.”

Although Woods-Drake does not herself appear to be an African-American, she has embraced Black movements and causes. One interpretation is that, like Rev. Al Sharpton, she is a sort of all-purpose Black protester.

Woods-Drake appeared at a Carlsbad press conference to protest a police tasing. She wore a black T-shirt that read “The future is black and female.” According to the Coast News, she “spoke about the historical context of police, noting police forces were originally slave patrols. She said the entire police system in the U.S. was founded and built on oppression.”

Woods-Drake said she has “10+ years experience in labor and community organizing, with a passion for social and racial justice.”

According to the Encinitas Advocate, Woods-Drake said her parents were labor organizers. “I always joke that I was raised on a picket line, so it’s kind of been in my blood since before I was born,” she said.

“I believe the vast majority of Encinitas residents believe in equality and equity,” Woods-Drake said. “Because this isn’t something that we deal with on a day-to-day basis — we don’t experience a lot of racism when there’s not a lot of race diversity here — [E4E] created an avenue for people to get involved who have been looking for a way to do something in their own backyard.”

It appears the Equity Committee and E4E are a solution to a problem that barely exists in Encinitas.

    1. There are a number of citizens who have advocated personally to get the council to build the 100% affordable housing that Blakespear sent up as a number to HCD. The problem is with our Encinitas City Council. There was absolutely no financial gain to those who advocated for Blakespear to follow through on her promise to HCD. In contrast, it is not clear what financial benefit the non-profits you mention are receiving for their own work. They seem to be acting as mouthpieces for the BIA, and by association the city council members who are BIA backed. Despite what you may hear about supporters of Prop A and other community activists, they actually DO care about qualified low-income residents. Why doesn't the council?

      Delete
    2. The only person that was backed by the BIA in the last election was Julie Thunder. She's the one whose family business has a longstanding affiliation with the BIA and who received support in the form of hit pieces against the incumbents, paid for by the BIA's PAC. How do you posit that the BIA backs the current council when they spent money in opposition to their reelections? Your narrative is bullshit.
