Kristin Gaspar goes nuts when her two-year appointment to mayor is shot down

Wow. Watch Gaspar's meltdown here. Fast forward to 03:42:00. Watch Gaspar's whole speech.

How dishonest that she keeps saying she supported all the issues Barth tried to put on the agenda, when Barth moved to put pension reform on the agenda and Gaspar has let it die.

While Gaspar's outburst was directed toward Barth, it was clearly a reaction to both Muir and Bond refusing to anoint her as well as the overwhelming public opposition.  Take a look at the twelve members of the public who spoke, many of them quite eloquently, beginning at 02:51:20.  Barth's comments which preceded Gaspar's outburst called the proposal "Orwellian" (I would have preferred the term "Machiavellian"), but hardly rose to level of prompting such a reaction from Gaspar.

I was drawn to look up the video by Andrew Audet's column in the Coast News.  Audet wrote:
Gaspar followed Barth and rather than address public comments, chose instead to let loose a verbal attack on Barth as being the cause for Gaspar’s negative portrayal in the media and local blogs.
Audet appears to be referring to Gaspar's statement, "I appreciate you [Barth] saying that it's not about me because every time we've discussed this issue, it becomes all about Council Member Barth, and the criticism that's come my way I believe is unfair as it relates to Council Member Barth."

While Gaspar didn't specifically mention blogs by name, I'm honored if in fact she is so consternated by "the criticism that's come my way" in the local blogs. The biggest local blog, the Leucadia Blog, hasn't said much about Gaspar, and as far as I know the little ol' Encinitas Undercover blog is the only one to comment on her earlier tirades or compare her record to her campaign promises.  Logan Jenkins of the Union-Tribune, certainly no Barth fan, has also criticised Gaspar at least twice (1, 2) for her pettiness toward Barth.

For the record, this blog does not get its narrative from Teresa Barth.  I call 'em like I see 'em, which includes being critical of Barth.
Here's local cartoonist Mary Fleener's cartoon on the subject from the Coast News:

  1. Thank you W.C for posting this, as Leucadia blog does seem to have gone into sleep mode.

I was at the meeting and was quite taken aback by Gaspar's outburst. She will regret doing this. My thoughts at the end of the meeting were exactly like yours. Gaspar was petulant and petty because her five-year plan (remember the old Soviet Union?) for personal advancement got derailed.

We are finally seeing the real Gaspar that has up to now been hidden behind a smile and trite comments.

She is truly the dragon lady. The dagger was unsheathed. I can hardly wait for Chapter Two.

  2. Petulant is a good word to describe that pathetic display of immaturity. She comes off as such a stereotypical SoCal air-head teenage girl. What an embarrassment to Encinitas. She, on the other hand, surely lacks the self awareness required to be embarrassed by one's own actions.

  4. Yes, her display was embarrassing, unprofessional, and petulant, as well! I hoped for the best, wanted her to be able to think independently, but she seems ruled by appearances, and unable to think for herself, always following a script, apparently "gone over" by her and Stocks, beforehand.

She was absolutely wrong at the 4/11/12 special meeting about the applicant, Danny Salzhandler's not going through "the process." It is the City that is and has been denying citizens due process of law by first attempting to abridge our First Amendment rights, and now declaring, arbitrarily, without Council discussion or citizen participation, either, that no new applications for sign permits in the public right of way will be accepted pending revision of the current code. That could take some time!

The current code is fine. Public officers, at the direction of the mayor to city attorney Glenn Sabine, improperly advised our new city manager that Maggie Houlihan's image is political AND that political content can legally be prohibited. That's not what our law says, FOR A REASON. To do so would be unconstitutional. The City can regulate the medium, NOT ban the message.

    1. Gaspar showing her true colors. There is no doubt that the banner permit was rejected by the city manager. That is why the image was coverered. There was no determining how long a council appeal would be if there was an appeal. The organizations had commitments to sponsors and artists. It was deceided to hang the banners with the tape hiding the image that Stocks could not tolerate being displayed. And the claim that the sign policy had any plausible reference to political images is rediculous.
Danny followed the process, was rejected and hung the banners as allowed by the permit. Gaspar knew that the permit applicant had nothing to do with the law suit threats.
The applicant is the receipent of the vollenteer of the year faward for all of
Encinitas, Rotary member, Arts Alive Founder, Artist, Board member of Cardiff101 MainStreet and offers his time and energy for many other causes.
Gaspar owes the applicant an apology. She knew that he had nothing to do with the threatened legal action, but used that as her resoning to vote no. She knew the applicant would not be there.
This is all on Stocks. He is the one that did not allow the flag to be flown at half-mast, had a permit for a memorial for Houlihan rejected.
And he had Sabin read things in the sign code that were not there and had the new city manager explain this strange interpretation of the sign code.
And the city council gets a rose for doing the right thing from NCT.
How can Stocks get away with doing these horrible things.
It is horrible to say but how would he feel and how would his wife feel if Stocks died and know that someone would fight to make sure friends, family and supporters would be thwarted from honoring him.
      Very bad form. Not worthy.
