Hipsters of Encinitas

San Diego Reader's Ask a Hipster column:
The next hipster haven will be somewhere nobody expects. Maybe Encinitas. Can you not imagine all the hipsters caring deeply whether they live east or west of the five? Imagine the hipsters on the right (left?) side of the freeway not-so-silently judging the hipsters on the wrong (right?) side of the freeway; sort of how real life Encinitas people do, but with detached irony. It would start ironically, but the next thing you know all the hipsters are sporting yoga pants and board shorts, and complaining about “non-locals” taking up all the brunch parking. The future is now!

  1. Sounds like an article from about 2005, when Encinitas was trending up. Most hipsters are leaving Encinitas now.

Cardiff still has its charm. Hard to lose since there isn't a whole lot changing there.

Deep Leucadia still has is it too. But after the streetscape, Leucadia will lose it and it will be like downtown now. Oversaturated trendiness. Downtown Encinitas used to have charm, then all the mom and pop shops got flushed out.

    1. Get a clue, Streetscape is deader than a door nail.

    2. I agree with the above, but.......Not sure if it is dead, per se, but it should be redesigned and restudied, and properly mitigated under a thorough traffic analysis. Hopefully coastal commission sends it back for additional study and identifies several areas of concern.

For example, Vulcan should be augmented in several areas, like adjacent to PEC and at Leucadia intersection, for additional car-movement. Maybe traffic signal adaption there too. Not sure if it can be done with expanding transit. Increasing frequency by two times will make crossings more frequent and unbearable for anyone trying to get east west during peak periods.

On street parking should also be eliminated near roundabout queueing areas. Parked cars can't leave a parking space if the 101 corridor is lined with slow moving vehicles, like it will be in summer months. It is already in congested areas. It will be like the downtown, but worse since the line of cars will be double since they move from two lanes to one lane.

I'd ask a traffic engineer, but they all left the City.

Who would respond to these questions when CCC staff redirects the same issues to City staff?

    3. Signal adaptation at L/Vulcan?

Orpheus/Vulcan needs a light. Like a couple of years ago. More traffic will destroy this area. I would have to double back just to get out of my neighborhood. I can't leave it in the morning as it is.

    4. Tony has the answer for all Streetscape issues: people will start using the 5 - problem solved!

    5. "Parked cars can't leave a parking space if the 101 corridor is lined with slow moving vehicles, like it will be in summer months."

Contending with slow-moving vehicles would make it easier to pull into and out of out on-street parking spaces. You will also see more vehicles yielding for that purpose.

    6. Angry drivers do not yield. And here's a news flash for the business owners: angry drivers are not in the mood to shop, either.

      Get a clue, folks.

    7. Slow vehicles will yield more readily than fast vehicles. If that's a difficult concept for you to grasp, then please save yourself the effort of responding.

    8. 10:29 AM, you seem like an angry person in general. So I would expect you to be an angry driver that does not yield and also does not shop. Because you're angry. I'll rely on the person in front or back of you to yield. It's all good.

    9. Not angry, just stating facts. You don't have to take my word for it; ask your friends. Be honest when you describe the situation, though.

Most folks when stuck in traffic are behind schedule and not the happiest of campers.

    10. 11:15 AM, I asked my friends. They all agree you seem like an angry person. They also all agreed that they would yield to let me park on the 101. Make some friends, and you too will be able to park on the 101.

    11. I think the poster at 8:46 is getting at a trend of "parked" cars that would be expected in the travel lane, that aren't going anywhere. Kinda like lines of cars leaving a ball game. I'm not sure the 101 would be that bad. But if there are slow moving cars, one car every ten or so seconds, then yeah, you should be able to get out pretty easily. But 101 will have a car every 2 or 3 seconds at roundabout constriction points.

I agree you won't be able to move out of a parked space near those areas. Elsewhere throughout the corridor, it should be ok.

    12. Question:

Does it take more time and distance to notice, react, and slow to let someone enter the roadway from 50 MPH or 15 MPH?

    13. 10:33 AM, your question is a good one. But someone here will soon respond that angry people won't let others out of their parking space regardless of speed. Because angry and because facts.

    14. You know who doesn’t let people in?

      Douche bags.

And douche bags are always douche bags, irrespective of speed.

Someone on this blog uses “anger” as an excuse, because they likely won’t admit being a douche bag.

    15. LOL @ douche bags, irrespective of speed!

    17. Im 8:46 from far above.

Why can't I have concerns about a project?

Isn't that what a thought process is supposed to create?

I am not trying to defeat an approved project. But I have questions. I want to know how it will work out, in real life. I may be off base with my concerns, but when a city's engineering division is completely gutted, I start to wonder. And my questions aren't going away.

I have driven Solana Beach in the summer. And it is a nightmare in some sections. I can't park in areas where I need to be and find more comfort parking on side streets or on Sierra or Acacia. It sounds like this project is going to do a lot more to the 101 that what they did.

  2. Everyone that lives west of the 5 don't want to live east of it. Everyone living east of Balour overpaid.
