Encinitas grocery shoppers are about to get a little more European influence. A design review permit application with the city became public last month, for the opening of an ALDI supermarket. It will be the sixth German-based store opened in San Diego County in the last two years, but the first one along the upper-middle class coastline.
ALDI’s website identifies the chain as “discount grocery.” Grocery items are shelved directly in the product’s cartons or open boxes. Their stores do not have banks, pharmacies, or cash checks.

The city web site identifies that application as 333 N. El Camino Real, the closed big box store in the Michaels center. But wait, isn't that also slated for R-30 by the Housing Element. Can it be both at the same time?
ReplyDeleteCorrection, The Michaels center is not on the current housing element. So many sites, like little fleas, have hopped on and off the plan and it's getting difficult to remember what the plan is doing.
ReplyDeleteIt's going to have a tough haul being stuck in the NO VISIBLITY shopping mall. I hope they got a great deal on the rent. I seldom cross El Camino for anything. They will have to discount, discount, discount.
ReplyDeleteI give them 18 months.
For the half of the city's population that lives near or east of the El Camino Real corridor, this may be attractive. Working people don't have the time or patience to their errands along 101.
ReplyDeleteALDI owns Trader Joe's. We have one of those.
ReplyDeleteI don’t need a GE jet engine; I already have a GE toaster.
DeleteIn fact both stores are owned by a German company. Aldi's products are very different. They're cheaper
DeleteAldi has many different products...None of them are the same as Trader Joes....So glad they are coming to Encinitas! Yay
DeleteAlpo makes dog food, can I get that at Aldi?
ReplyDeleteIs Solana Beach renewable energy scam going to be pitched to Encinitas next?
