A group of residents is urging the city to reconsider plans for a large, concrete staircase at Beacon’s Beach to supplement, and ultimately replace, the iconic switchback staircase beachgoers currently use.
The group, called “Preserve Beacon’s,” has mounted a petition drive and campaign in advance of the July 19 Planning Commission consideration of a coastal development permit for the proposed staircase.
I like the staircase at Swami's. It's wood timbers and concrete footings. The problem with Beacon is that it is still an active landslide and even now it doesn't have enough parking but the proposed changes will reduce even that.
ReplyDeleteReduced parking = reduced beach access = of interest to the coastal commission.
ReplyDeleteWho cares about beach access?
ReplyDeleteBoth the city, and the protest group are missing the real problem, which is the corruption of the real name of Bacon Beach.
The old man who used to live inside the aeronautical beacon at the top of the bluff used to go down to the beach to cook his breakfast. Some say if you go down there in the silent darkness before dawn, you can still hear and smell the sizzling bacon. To this day, surfers bring pork-based offerings to the ghost of the bluff (he prefers breakfast burritos). In exchange the ghost offers his blessings for a safe and glassy, peeling, uncrowded peak.
Bacon Beach.
True story.
Go back to teaching math.
DeleteI didn't know that!
DeleteExtremely heavy rains destroyed the Grandview stairs. What's there now is a replacement.
ReplyDeleteThe Swami's stairs are also a replacement. What caused the previous stairs to be replaced?
Heavy rains could take down the Beacon access as it is now or will be if stairs are built there.
If you want to improve beach access just build a tunnel from Leucadia Roadside Park to Beacon/Beacon's Beach. Just need a door to close during tsunami alerts.
ReplyDeleteYou spelled “Bacon” wrong.
DeleteI think a water slide to the furthest waves would be popular.
ReplyDeleteReverse tsunami syndrome.
DeleteOr is it possessive: Bacon’s Beach?
ReplyDeleteDo we really need another huge, over-priced structure after what happened at Moonlight Beach?
ReplyDeleteWhy don't they just install an elevator?
ReplyDeleteMy surfboard is too big for their elevator.
DeleteAnother bad night for Brenda. Here's hoping she's headed for the door.
ReplyDeleteWell done Encinitas citizens! Marco was in favor of this project? I don't understand how this is environmental.
ReplyDeleteIt's not. He's not.
DeleteOur dark knight may have once been a known environmentalist lawyer, but he has long since squandered whatever good reputation he had for those pursuits.
ReplyDeletecha ching.
He deserves little respect, except from the pillagers our community is dealing with.
How nice that he has chosen to set up shop here. It is not for the good of this community preserving our long beloved specialness that he has helped to diminish.
He probably revels in being known as the dark knight and showing up at council meetings with his earrings and hat on backwards after lubricating himself for free at the downtown bars he defends.
It sure has been profitable, no doubt helping to degrade our community while padding his bank account. He fits right in with what our downtown has become.
At least of those of us who have been around long enough know what has been lost and have our memories.
Ain't progress wonderful with all the alcohol based vibrancy? For a few yes. $$$$ Not so much for rest.
Marco is a dis-ease.
