Encinitans rally for freedom

KUSI:
Saturday, there was a “Freedom Protest” in Downtown San Diego, only to be followed up by another “Freedom Protest” in Encinitas.

KUSI’s Dave Scott was live in Encinitas where he spoke to the protest organizer and some participants.

    1. Yeah. He's a lot smarter than you. You should listen and try and understand what he is saying. Its easy for most and I recognize some people may need to listen a few times. Take your time and listen to it 7 times. You can learn if you want to.

    2. apparently he's not if he's not wearing a mask or maintaining a 6 foot buffer. I listened to what he said, some of it was relevant, some of it was off the mark. Obviously he's not taking his own advice. He's in the age bracket that should not be outside during a protest.

    3. His name is Jan Schnitzer. He is indeed an MD, but he never even did a residency. Instead he went straight into research. I have had the opportunity to watch his research career usp close sine 1992. Mor on that later.

He did indeed say make some insightful and quite correct points, but actions are louder than words, and his were incredibly irresponsible. He also spoke in an arrogant way that condescended to less informed people's fears.

FWIW, on paper he has had a stellar academic career, but his career arc can best be characterized by "failing upward." He's been a joke for over 15 years, nearly running SKCC research into the ground by the time he was forced out in 2010. His last paper in a top tier journal was in 2014 and has garnered a total of 34 citations. Journal average is 497, meaning his work was dismissed. His bullshit PRISM is a laughingstock con game, 10 years with nothing to show but conned investors.

He also failed to tell the KUSI reporter to stop adjusting his mask, which anyone trained in PPE use would know instinctively is a dangerous practice. Schnitzer is an attention whore, and he will cause deaths.

  3. I assume that all of us agree with the experts who say that social distancing is reducing the potential impact of COVID-19. Although I am personally fine with the "stay at home" orders, I can understand why others would like to re-open beaches and the like as soon as possible. The problem I have with the protesters is that they did not follow social distancing during their protest. The strongest argument for re-opening beaches would be that people can gather on beaches while respecting social distancing. Instead, the protestors showed that they don't respect social distancing and thereby made their protest a waste of time. I mean, really: Who is going to re-open beaches for folks who couldn't care less about social distancing? Whoever organized the protest dropped the ball on this one.

    1. So come up with a rotation system. Divide the alphabet into 7, allow people one day a week depending on the first letter of their last name. Allow co-habitants with different names and proof of common addresses out together.

This is not an either-or situatio & it's not hard to make reasonable accomodations. Jack up the fines for violators.

Anyone with an understanding of how epidemics work knows this is a strategy for hot spot flare-ups. The false dichotomy (everyone at home v everyone free to roam) may help some politically, but in the long run it will harm businesses even more, and will kill thousands.

  6. 8:46 is spot on. The beaches were closed because people were not maintaining social distancing. Protesting the beaches being closed during a pandemic is like protesting the lack of ice when the titanic is going down. This is all a drag for all of this. We can fight over which set of so called experts we want to believe, or we can all hold the line together, stay off the beach for another month and then try and gradually re-open everything. There's going to have to be some changes, big gatherings, outdoor concerts and regular trips to the beach might take awhile. The key thing is we need testing, so we can have a system of who's going back to work and into the public space.

  7. 6:20 bullshit. Reopen beaches and trails. People are smart enough to stay away from others if they fear getting sick. It should be a personal decision not a government decision. Beaches were closed because a politician wanted to make a name for herself. Wuhan virus doesn't swim well so if you are at the beach surfing less chance of getting it than sitting in line at taco bell, Walmart, Costco etc.

    1. Agreed. Some people are dumb as hell. I can guarantee you that stores, sidewalks, and all elevators are not maintaining the 6 feet. There is not enough room.

The closing of the beach was an act by Blakespear that should backfire big time. She is bad for Encinitas.

    2. Classy. People weren't maintaining the distance on the beach either. Same goes for Neptune.

      Delete
  8. No they're not. I give you the first weekend or two after people were asked to self-isolate. the beaches, campgrounds and even beaches were packed from Encinitas north to Oceanside. Neptune in Encinitas is still basically too crowded to maintain distancing, unless you go very early in the morning. What it comes down to is personal responsibility, and people aren't owning that and staying in their own neighborhood. If you let surfers and swimmers onto the beach and into the water, then everyone has a right to be allowed down there. I'm exercising just fine, walking on the highway. As for Walmart and Costco, this is the time to avoid those stores at all costs. I wouldn't go into Costco right now for a million bucks.

    1. Then don't. Stay in your house if you want the rest of us want to live. There is no reason for the beach closures.

    Ireland 15,251 610 4.0% 12.57

    India 17,615 559 3.2% 0.04

    1. That's a total oversimplification on both points. The middle class has been shrinking for decades. A lot of it is due to the cost of housing, and the high % of income that housing costs suck up. Add in higher education costs and healthcare, with stagnant wages and more people entering the workforce, and you have a shrinking middle class, while the upper and lower class grow. Throw in a major recession, the loss of the social contract and boom, you have our current situation. Hence the rise in populist sentiment...

    2. Free speech is a different animal on the web now than in the old days where people had to sign their name to an opinion. Either way, I think it's pretty awful to threaten someone's job when they are acting as a private citizen. She did give her name, and it's on tv, and obviously I can't speak for how her employers view that kind of action, that is their call. But to advocate a boycott of this company, which has nothing to do with this AND is providing the city with sanitizer, is beyond lame. Too bad, I remember when this blog had really good info on what was truly going on in Encinitas.

The whole thing becomes a chain of stupidity in the washer machine of the 24 hour news cycle. Despite the right to carry coverage of the protest, I wouldn't do it if it's my paper or station at this point. Just let it die a quiet death. You give people air time, followed by online discourse back and forth just gives the whole thing legs. It's a big city, I'm not going to let 200 maroons ruin it. 26. It's quite pathetic the levels of anonymous online trolls will go to. I would venture to guess the anger is getting to the point of serious social unrest to the point where most cannot even fathom. The woman had the courage (most here have none) to put the truth out there and act on it. Do not we all want to have some sense of normalcy even if it's the lighter but special things in life like nails or hair being beautified, kids able to practice sports on open (not padlocked) parks, kids and/or adults enjoying surfing in the fresh spring breeze which is 10,000% less like to hold a virus, men getting their wigs clipped, walking and watching the sunset instead of encountering blockades of foolishness, people being able to work and make a living and such. Article in the LA Slimes today about how 55% of the LA population is now out of work? If true that is the perfect recipe for social unrest most have never seen. It will leak into the privileged neighborhoods of Encinitas. You mark this post if you think we can go another month of this complete and total abomination. I submit the panic merchants and fear mongerers have no idea. If things don't begin to change in a week it's over. Hopefully your S&P 500 will hit 666 or lower where it deserves to be. You're all a bunch of docile wimps.

  28. Three thoughts:

    (a) Those who protested the beach closures have a right to protest, but they have to do so in alignment with the health orders issued by the state and county. All of the people who gathered close together on Sunday on the 101 should be slapped with a $1,000 fine (and they should feel lucky not to be tossed in jail).

    (b) Regarding trying to get someone fired, I am not a fan of such an effort.... Reminds me of Bernie Goetz in the 1980s. Vigilantism...not cool....

    (c) Whether the intent of the protest was noble or not (and I think it was misguided from the start), those who protested came across as whiny, entitled, soft, and out-of-touch. I am fond of Encinitas and don't care to see the hashtag #EncinitasMorons become a popular hashtag.

  32. I agree with 8:15 and I am also so embraced at how stupid so many Encinitians are about the spread of COVID 19. You all are so missing the point. The point was to flatten the curve. Here is the main point.

THE CURVE IS AS FLAT AS IT COULD BE WITHOUT GOING NEGATIVE. OVER THE LAST MONTH THE POSITIVE TESTING RATES HAVE RANGE UP TO 130 CASES PER DAY BUT THE HAVE BEEN STEADY NEAR 50 FOR A WHOLE WEEK.

    https://www.sandiegocounty.gov/content/dam/sdc/hhsa/programs/phs/Epidemiology/COVID-19%20Bar%20Graph%20of%20New%20and%20Total%20Cases.pdf

At even 100 new cases per day to work through even say 20% of the 3.4 million people in SD County would be 18 years.

I am not staying inside with the beaches closed for 18 years for a virus that has a death rate of .0003 of the population including already sick really old people (75 and older- many of them were probably close to dying regardless of COVID).

Catch a fucking clue. If you feel vulnerable stay inside and isolate as much as you can. The rest of the world may want to get back to living!

There are 4,000 ICU beds in San Diego County yet barely no one whith COVID are filling them. WTF? WE have been at this for over a month and yet no spread. This is total BS. The spread has already happened and I am sure over half of you idiots who are walking around in your mask and rubber gloves (totally unsustainable actions) already have been exposed to the F'ing virus.

You people are fucking morons. I am going out for a long run and bike ride right in front of your home to enjoy the outdoors. You fucking idiots stay inside and watch Contagion again and then watch I am Legend. That is what will happen to you next time you walk outside and get near someone.

  42. Re: Relaxing stay at home order.

    It will happen, but . . ,

We still don’t have a reliable antibody test, so we don’t know how many have been exposed. We also don’t know if a positive antibody test equates to immunity, and if so, for how long. We also don’t have testing for active infection in sufficient accuracy and volume to monitor for flare ups that, left unchecked, could very quickly swamp the healthcare system. We also don’t have a green light from the local hospitals that they are sufficiently stocked up on PPE and ventilators to manage the expected flare ups from relaxing the SAH order. Nor do we have a plan, and enough trained professionals to perform contact tracing.

Once we have all of these things in place, then we can start talking about relaxing the order.

Maybe if the fat orange turd hadn’t wasted six weeks in February and early March doing nothing to implement distancing, solve PPE shortage, fix the testing debacle—then maybe our peak would be lower, and we could be at a point today where relaxing was possible. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen, and we must live with the consequences of mismanagement.

A lot has been made of modeling errors to suggest that this isn’t a big deal, and that relaxing the SAH order will be fine. But remember, on the cruise ship Diamond Princess, the models suggested that locking everyone in their cabins would result in an estimated 64 infections by the time they could debark the ship. In reality, they had over 700. So the models can be wrong in both directions, and with an exponential logistic curve, a tiny error makes a huge difference.

Relaxing SAH orders have to account for that error possibility and what it could mean for the local healthcare system capacity.

We will get there, but there’s a lot of work that remains to be done before we’re truly ready. And relaxing will be very cautious and gradual with heavy monitoring to map predicted impacts to actual results.

  43. Interesting thread, to say the least.... A lot of folks trying to intimidate others....

I am sure that a creative lawyer could find some valid reason to file a lawsuit against those who are threatening to get the protest organizer fired from her job. So, for those who are threatening the protest organizer, just stop already.

And for those who are threatening others on this blog, just stop already as well. Seriously. If you want the beaches open, then make the case to open them. You had a chance to do so at the protest on Sunday and failed miserably--on national news, no less. Had the protest exercised social distancing, the move to re-open the beaches might have received broader support. For those who say the virus is exaggerated, it is not your call whether to follow social distancing--it is a state order. So, you should have followed it during the protest.

    1. What threat?

A peaceful boycott isn’t like, say, organizing a mob to violate a public health order in front of the mayor’s private residence where her kids are.

    2. 11:25 First off please show us the historical scientific studies that show physical distancing has worked in the past or is actually working as we encounter this foolishness on a day to day basis. I believe there are studies the lockdown of families inside closed spaces actually makes the problem worse.

As far as threats on this blog. An angry male poster posted threatening information including encouraging people to call a young woman's employer and have her fired due to the fact that male poster hated this woman. Is rape ok with you? This poster should not only banned forever from this blog but he should either have his face smashed beyond recognition or be placed in a jail cell or both to think about what he did for a short or preferrably long (years) while.

If you do not agree I am sorry you enjoy criminal behavior and maybe you are part of the greater problem.

I think you are incorrect about the freedom protest on Sunday. The local fire department showed it's support for the civil liberties of the people as did the Sheriffs department.

I do not agree with them taking the group to the Mayors house yet I also do not agree with closing the beaches and padlocking parks and barricading beach entrances and other public places.

Even still the Mayor is a public figure and the result of her becoming a public figure and making really bad decisions over years of time has its consequences.

The distancing and mask thing is a complete abomination of scientific reality unless you're going to continue to do it in perpetuity.

Maybe the great wheel in the sky knows what he/they/her/him is doing and it needs to cull the stupid/fearful herd more drastically so Darwins angels can enjoy life a little more?

After all this is Encinitas man, what the hell did you expect?

  44. Crista Curtis obviously supports the right to peacefully call for a boycott of her employer. In her own words:

"To listen to the few naysayers... who want to control everybody else - look I’m just all about freedom," said Curtis. "I don’t want to tell someone else what to do and I don’t want to be told what to do."

I agree with Crista. Free speech is very important. Right?

  45. 11:25 right on. Despite whatever feelings you have about the govt or the virus, the fact is, a lot of people need food and have no jobs. If the organizers of this activity had a table to collect food or clothing or sign up sheets to form a group that would educate people, I would less critical. As they say: "If you can't dazzle them with your brilliance, baffle them with you bullshit".

    Nice people.

Ogden was booted out of the radical “Patriots” movement in San Diego for his racist attack on a black conservative activist.

When you look around at your friends and allies, and you and see Nazis, it doesn’t mean necessarily that you are a Nazi, but it definitely means it’s time to take stock of the beliefs and decisions that brought you to this point.

    1. No new cases in Encinitas for weeks.

Countywide curve completely flattened for weeks.

The 109 you got so excited about was a one-day blip. Now back to 50-something per day, where it has been for weeks.

Go back to your basement, Granny.

    2. Unless we’ve closed the border to Encinitas and I’m unaware of it, then people are mobile, and the county number is more relevant.

At a stable 50 new tested cases per day, and an average infectious period for each case of 10 days, that means 500 active cases. Which leaves out the untested due to the lost six weeks when the fat orange turd was predicting magic would take care of it in April, but I digress. Then there’s the asymptomatic. It’s estimated that the asymptomatic and the untested cases are in the neighborhood of 20x the tested cases. So it’s not 500; it’s more likely 10,000 active infectious cases wandering around the county, some without any clue they’re a vector.

With that kind of seeding in the region, combined with still broken and inaccurate testing, and a medical community that doesn’t have enough PPE for a major flare up, and very few professional contact tracing workers—with all of that being the reality, it’s time to stay home, chill out, and let people smarter than you (or me) do their thing.

We will get there. It will take time.

  56. The NC3 group needs to get rid of Thomas Roger Thomas Ogden if he has in fact been allowed to join their group.

This sorry excuse for a human being has been posting his racist views for years.

If Crista has anything to do with characters such as this, she has lost her way. I was disappointed to see her on camera apparently leading the stupid protest. She does seek attention before the camera's when they show up. If her notoriety comes back to bite her, she brought it on and has no one else to blame but herself.

Right wingers come in all shapes and sizes and the NC3 group is full of forever trumper lovers. Yes, there are a number of Independents involved in that group that I will continue to support, but this idiotic protest was not helpful and was dangerous to all of us as we navigate a new reality.

I’m glad you asked about Roger Ogden, because it gives me a chance to repeat that he is now part of Christa Curtis’ posse on her Free Encinitas FB group. He’s also a well known San Diego Nazi.

I’m not a huge fan of Tony Kranz, and I don’t advocate violence, but Tony did attempt to throw an imaginary baseball while standing very near Ogden’s face, and accidentally smashed it as hard as he could.

If you are going to lose it and smash a face, it should probably be with a Nazi, that’s all.

Do NOT be distracted by what all other coastal counties around the State are doing or the World, Mayor Blakespear DEMANDS that you stay indoors.

The virus is much much more infectious in the surf zone in San Diego water than the Orange County Water and that is why you must not go to the beach and stay in doors. A really really smart Phd said so.

It doesn't matter that no surfers contracted Corona in the surf zone, they could have and we will not take any chances - Again Stay In Doors.

we will reassess the conditions once we feel like it, but you must Stay Indoors.

Attention Citizens - if you are found in violation of not watching enough airtime about covid 19, we will reduce your rations.

Attention Citizens - Stay In Side for your own safety! By order of Mayor Blakespear
