Fatal Encinitas e-bike crash covered in NY Times

NY Times:
On a Thursday evening in late June, Clarissa Champlain learned that her 15-year-old son Brodee had been in a terrible crash, the latest teen victim of an e-bike accident.

He had been riding from home to shot-putting practice. The e-bike, a model made by Rad Power, had a top speed of 20 miles per hour, but his route took him on a busy road with a 55-mile-per-hour limit. While turning left, he was clipped by a Nissan van and thrown violently.

131 comments:

  1. What does this Chad Majer guy who lives in Carlsbad and works for a company in Encinitas that pushes e bikes have to say to the parents of this victim? He was pushing hard for Encinitas
e bikes, and had rings of heart emojis around any comment about e bikes since he seemed to be make money on them at the expense of those who have been hurt or killed. Encinitas doesn't have to be the first in every experimental idea! Why not wait and look at other communities with experience before making decisions that jeopardize the safety of residents?? Why not?? Because it is all about bragging rights for council campaigns since they have nothing else to offer!

  2. So sad. Encinitas gives lip service about an emergency declaration but then spend $20 million plus huge outstanding annual operations and maintenance cost for a second community center by the beach.

The streets in Encinitas are not only super dangerous, but they’re literally falling apart. Deferred unfunded maintenance. So irresponsible and so sketchy.

Many more lawsuits to drop. Dr. Worley’s wrongful death suit settlement is going to be well over $20 million. I’m guessing in the $40-$50 million range.

Elections have consequences. We have The Town Dunce and his girlfriend first lady Starvin. Along with the town jester 🐖👧 to thank.

    1. Where is the outrage from the citizens and voters?

Spending $20 million on a second community center and funding many more staff to run the second community center is completely irresponsible. All while the city pays out millions and millions in losses due to negligence and wrongful death.

My car got major damage from hitting a freaking pothole on the way to Home Depot. I wonder how many people on bikes go down because of that crappy Street conditions. How are the improvements along La Costa and Vulcan going June or LeucadiaNow?

Why aren’t you getting up in front of city council and telling them we don’t need a second community center by the beach and use the money for really needed projects?

  3. Whether Brodee was on an ebike or a regular bike, this tragedy is the result of negligent car drivers. The bikes aren't going away. Speed limits need to be reduced, additional signage added, and more protected bike lanes. Stop blaming the bikes for the failures of car drivers.

    1. Yeah because more signs = more better. Just look at the car that managed to wedge itself in the bike lane in Cardiff. Neither cars nor bikes are safe from the Blakespear/Kranz "improvements." Wake up 10:46 and figure out that merely declaring us a "biking town" does no one any favors.

    3. 10:46- you show your ignorance.

    5. What is negligence? Failure to maintain 110% hyper-vigilance 100% of the time?

The pro-bike team around these parts feels that ALL riders of bikes should feel safe-space safe on ALL roads at ALL times. Nice enough goal, super unrealistic.

There are signs on the street, in the air, side of the road. How the stinkin badges am I supposed to see a bike amidst all the CLUTTER? Too busy trying to read the signs. Or as others elude to, ignore the signs.

My son thinks that Abe is enacting some sort of revenge on the residents by continuously creating failed road redesigns that appear to be designed by children.

  6. I thought the report of this accident described the bike rider had swerved out into the traffic lane and into the van.

The van driver had not been cited at the time. Is this correct?

Nevertheless, whoever was at fault, this is a tragedy that did not have to happen. Let's hope others can learn from this and there will not be a repeat.

We all know some e-bike riders are an accident waiting to happen. We also know some kids are misbehaving to the point of criminality. Not all kids, mind you.

These motorized vehicles should be licensed, as much for themselves as for doing away with the anonymity factor that certain misbehaviors have spawned.

Perfection fallacy attempts to set an unreasonable and impossibly high bar of success for any solution so that nothing gets done.

The true threshold for success isn’t whether the solution is perfect, but rather whether it’s better than what we have today.

In fact, more people using current public transportation technology would be a significant improvement to carbon emissions. The question is how to make it more practical and desirable.

    8. Even if electric vehicles were powered by a 100% coal fired grid, they would still be better for the environment than internal combustion cars.

      Here’s why:

At the size and scale of a coal fired generation station, the conversion from the potential energy stored in chemical bonds to electricity is extremely efficient. Very little of the energy released from coal power plants is lost as waste heat. And electric vehicles can convert nearly all of that electricity into motion.

But your internal combustion engine car has to have a complex system to remove excess heat and dump it into the air. Coolant has to be pumped through voids in the engine block and sent to a radiator that has an electric fan. So much of the energy in gasoline is wasted that the engine would literally melt without this cooling system.

Even when you factor in transmission losses in the electric grid, EVs powered by coal plants would still produce less CO2 than an internal combustion engine.

But no grid is 100% coal anymore. Natural gas fired plants are better than coal, and hydro, nuclear, wind and solar all play a role. So the case for EV is way better than described above.

Then there’s looking at the comparison over time. A new gas burning car purchased today will still burn 100% gas 20 years from now when it reaches end of life. But an EV purchased today relies on a grid whose supply mix is shifting away from fossil fuels and toward renewables. So an EV purchased today that relies on a grid that runs 70/30 fossil/renewable—in 20 years that same car may be running on that same grid powered by a 10/90 split (fossil / renewable).

So an EV powered by a 100% coal grid would still beat your gasser. With the actual mix today it beats your gasser by an even wider margin. And an EV purchased today will continue to become more and more efficient throughout its useful life.

  23. I don’t think licensing will help with eBikes.

    There are three problems:

1.) E-bikes move differently. Drivers develop a subconscious expectation of when and where bikes will be. E-bikes are faster than this mental map would expect. They end up physically in a different place than a driver expects.

2.) They make riding a bike easier, so more people will do it. This cuts both ways. It’s a good thing for carbon emissions and for parking and traffic. More people opting to take a bike to lunch or school means less cars making those trips. On the other hand, more people on bikes means more people traveling without the benefit of a steel cage to protect them, and presenting a smaller less noticeable visual presence. A driver is less likely to notice a bike as opposed to an SUV. More people on bikes translates to more car-bike accidents and deaths. We can work on mitigating this risk, but it will never go away.

3.) E-bikes are relatively new. They are drawing in new riders that don’t have the same skills as experienced riders. Riding a bike safely requires different skills than driving a car. The ability to anticipate what a car might do; the ability to scan windows of parked cars to predict an opening door; active listening for the sound of a car approaching from behind; the ability to scan for shadows on the ground that could be a hidden dog or kid chasing a ball—all skills that a bike rider has to develop over time. Many E-bike riders just lack the many hours needed to develop these skills.

Licensing riders won’t hurt, but I don’t see how it helps either.

    1. Adding on now that I think about it, two more contributing factors:

E-bikes are heavy, which translates to longer braking distance.

E-bikes are faster, adding energy to any crash. Injuries are likely to be more severe.

But I’m not convinced any of this would be addressed by licensing.

“All of you who are looking for a welcoming place to live, or just take drugs and pander in the area, please come to our beautiful Encinitas beaches. We are here. We are your friend. We are very very giving and we welcome you! “

  35. Phony taught me how to perform a Rusty Trombone this morning. Phony enjoyed it thoroughly but it isn’t my personal favorite, though I will say it’s better than the Juice Boxing I had to endure the entire month of June…glad he’s over that phase, twas getting old.

  36. The kid blew across traffic lanes from the right, trying to access the left turning lane. Miscalculated the oncoming traffic or didn't even look and differential in speed occurred. When a vehicle meets bicycle , the bike always loses. That dynamic will remain in force. These bikes need licenses and users more training if they continue to be allowed to act as motor vehicles.

    1. Oh, you saw the collision?

You should report you observations to the Sheriffs.

What’s more likely is just blowing smoke out your ass and you’re making assumptions. So you should STFU.

  37. I have a brilliant plan.

What if every town spends a fortune trying to send the homeless to other towns. But of course all towns are doing the same thing, so lots of money gets spent, and nothing actually happens.

We can waste a metric shit ton of money that could have been used to provide temporary shelter and transitional services that actually help people get back on their feet.

    What a brilliant idea, huh?

  38. I have another brilliant idea.

How’s about we reject infill and density, driving suburban sprawl and exponentially increasing the length of the boundary between suburbs and wildfire chaparral. We’ll continue to expand the boundary to where it’s indefensible, and insurance companies refuse to underwrite the risk.

    How smart I am.
