Fatal Encinitas e-bike crash covered in NY Times
NY Times:
On a Thursday evening in late June, Clarissa Champlain learned that her 15-year-old son Brodee had been in a terrible crash, the latest teen victim of an e-bike accident.
He had been riding from home to shot-putting practice. The e-bike, a model made by Rad Power, had a top speed of 20 miles per hour, but his route took him on a busy road with a 55-mile-per-hour limit. While turning left, he was clipped by a Nissan van and thrown violently.
What does this Chad Majer guy who lives in Carlsbad and works for a company in Encinitas that pushes e bikes have to say to the parents of this victim? He was pushing hard for Encinitas
ReplyDeletee bikes, and had rings of heart emojis around any comment about e bikes since he seemed to be make money on them at the expense of those who have been hurt or killed. Encinitas doesn't have to be the first in every experimental idea! Why not wait and look at other communities with experience before making decisions that jeopardize the safety of residents?? Why not?? Because it is all about bragging rights for council campaigns since they have nothing else to offer!
So sad. Encinitas gives lip service about an emergency declaration but then spend $20 million plus huge outstanding annual operations and maintenance cost for a second community center by the beach.
ReplyDeleteThe streets in Encinitas are not only super dangerous, but they’re literally falling apart. Deferred unfunded maintenance. So irresponsible and so sketchy.
Many more lawsuits to drop. Dr. Worley’s wrongful death suit settlement is going to be well over $20 million. I’m guessing in the $40-$50 million range.
Elections have consequences. We have The Town Dunce and his girlfriend first lady Starvin. Along with the town jester 🐖👧 to thank.
Where is the outrage from the citizens and voters?
DeleteSpending $20 million on a second community center and funding many more staff to run the second community center is completely irresponsible. All while the city pays out millions and millions in losses due to negligence and wrongful death.
My car got major damage from hitting a freaking pothole on the way to Home Depot. I wonder how many people on bikes go down because of that crappy Street conditions. How are the improvements along La Costa and Vulcan going June or LeucadiaNow?
Why aren’t you getting up in front of city council and telling them we don’t need a second community center by the beach and use the money for really needed projects?
10:25- First the Council is not in session until August. Second, they don't care and lastly, many have spoken time after time in oral communications while the Council takes a nap.
DeleteWhether Brodee was on an ebike or a regular bike, this tragedy is the result of negligent car drivers. The bikes aren't going away. Speed limits need to be reduced, additional signage added, and more protected bike lanes. Stop blaming the bikes for the failures of car drivers.
ReplyDeleteYeah because more signs = more better. Just look at the car that managed to wedge itself in the bike lane in Cardiff. Neither cars nor bikes are safe from the Blakespear/Kranz "improvements." Wake up 10:46 and figure out that merely declaring us a "biking town" does no one any favors.
DeleteYou are half right...many drivers are irresponsible jerks in many cases. Now, on to stupid, arrogant, youthful bike riders.
DeleteDo stupid things...win stupid prizes. I see it all the time. Three tiny kids on one ebike in busy traffic.
My neighbor simply refers to them as "road kill".
10:46- you show your ignorance.
DeleteLowering speed limits does nothing. Drivers ignore signs. They don’t follow the current speed limit. Why would they follow any future revise speed limits? They don’t and they wouldn’t.
Sharpen up there girl.
10:52- 💯. You get it completely.
DeleteWhat is negligence? Failure to maintain 110% hyper-vigilance 100% of the time?
DeleteThe pro-bike team around these parts feels that ALL riders of bikes should feel safe-space safe on ALL roads at ALL times. Nice enough goal, super unrealistic.
There are signs on the street, in the air, side of the road. How the stinkin badges am I supposed to see a bike amidst all the CLUTTER? Too busy trying to read the signs. Or as others elude to, ignore the signs.
My son thinks that Abe is enacting some sort of revenge on the residents by continuously creating failed road redesigns that appear to be designed by children.
11:55: 95%. -5% for children comment. kids are much smarter and would not produce such flawed designs.
DeleteNo mention of the gangs of children on ebikes that constantly follow Lorri around just to knock her over?
ReplyDelete💯🥰🤣
DeleteDid she really say that? 😱
Delete6:20: Yes, during a council meeting too. She can't delete that! 🤣
DeleteThe roads in Encinitas are confusing, dangerous, and undeniably poorly maintained. Leadership fail.
ReplyDelete💯. Why do we have The Town Dunce as Mayor?
DeleteI thought the report of this accident described the bike rider had swerved out into the traffic lane and into the van.
ReplyDeleteThe van driver had not been cited at the time. Is this correct?
Nevertheless, whoever was at fault, this is a tragedy that did not have to happen. Let's hope others can learn from this and there will not be a repeat.
We all know some e-bike riders are an accident waiting to happen. We also know some kids are misbehaving to the point of criminality. Not all kids, mind you.
These motorized vehicles should be licensed, as much for themselves as for doing away with the anonymity factor that certain misbehaviors have spawned.
E-bike do not need licenses FGS…
DeleteYour gov will not save you and make you happy. Go back inside and keep your mask on.
- don’t tread on me
11:19-
DeleteAbsolutely. The last thing we need is more paperwork and rules that will not be enforced. And taxes/fees to boot.
The cops don’t even enforce straight pipe motorcycle laws, so they’re not gonna enforce any kind of bike permits or licenses. Like Encinitas has more money to give to sheriffs? Right! Geez….
What is wrong with some of you? Licenses are the stupidest idea I’ve heard.
I think some people just love a nanny state. Freaking Commies.

E-bikes and cars are incompatible. Always will be.
ReplyDeleteit sounds like the kid abruptly cut traffic lanes starting from the far right side, trying to access the left turn lane and got nailed in the process. These bikes should not be allowed in the regular traffic lanes - they should remain in the right lanes and walk across intersections. Otherwise, register them as motor vehicles and reguire licenses.
ReplyDelete4:46- they should require licenses for idiots like you to leave your house.
DeleteYou are not only hazard to yourself, but you’re a hazard to society. I think the state needs to have a license requirement for people to pass common sense questions before they’re allowed to leave their house.
I’m 100% certain you will fail.
Get a license to leave your house, or stay at home or face a huge ticket. Plus, they should let third-party citizens self check other peoples licenses so I can whip your ass if you didn’t pass the test. And then I get to throw you back in your house.
4:46 you are 100 percent correct

ReplyDeleteGot to live in a special kind of bubble to ignore what your eyes tell you.
Degher would happily throw himself in front of a bus if he thought it would do Blakespear and Kranz any good. Consider the source.

So is the weird obtuseness of your snuggle comments. Yes Kranz and Walsh worked together to get Kranz elected and to be sure it's a strange relationship there. But if you want to harm Kranz you'll be most effective by making sure his progressive supporters know who and what he's in league with. Just a suggestion.

"Losers can't get over losing" Is that the campaign slogan for Barstow's finest?
Delete🐖👧
DeleteThey should revise the statement to “Encinitas voters can’t get over losing…. “
ReplyDeleteThey are right. the losses do you hurt the Encinitas voters. Maybe someday enough people will get involved when people are tired of the roads being shit and they’re paying for two or three community centers for a few special-needs citizens.
How many finger painters are actually going to use the second community center? And how many millions is it costing per year?
How many people use our roads? And how much are we spending on improving safety on the Costa and walking and all of our roads in the city?
Yeah, that’s kind of interesting…
this will never happen. Lets the lawsuits fly. and remove BIA from office.

What will happen is to move the railroad tracks off the beach and route them to I-15 and up to the backside of Camp Pendleton.
ReplyDeleteRailroads were 18th century technology. Unless if they are going 300 mph and EV they just don’t make sense.
Ev sucks.
Deleteya right...that is exactly what everyone needs, something that travels 300 miles an hour.
DeletePerfection fallacy:
Delete“Unless if they are going 300 mph and EV they just don’t make sense.”
Perfection fallacy attempts to set an unreasonable and impossibly high bar of success for any solution so that nothing gets done.
The true threshold for success isn’t whether the solution is perfect, but rather whether it’s better than what we have today.
In fact, more people using current public transportation technology would be a significant improvement to carbon emissions. The question is how to make it more practical and desirable.
This is where people are clueless. Where does electricity come from? Windmills are a proven joke, solar is just o.k for a house but not to power the grid...not possible.
DeleteNever mind...tricity comes out of the wall
EV sucks? More like you are an idiot. EV sales have crushed all non EV sales. So I think the market is smarter than you.
DeleteOK stupid. move over to Encinitas all stupid people are welcome.
PS- electricity comes from solar stupid. I’ve been driving for free for over ten years.
DeleteNo electric bills are great!!!
7:55- so what you’re saying is the Chinese and Europeans and other nations are smarter and can have high speed rail but the US count and drivers will gladly ride a 25 mph train or get on a drug killed slow bus?
DeleteI think the data shows otherwise. The slow drug trains and buses are empty and I still polluting our environment.
* 7:55- so what you’re saying is the Chinese and Europeans and other nations are smarter and can have high speed rail but the US can not and drivers will gladly ride a slow 25 mph train or get on a tweeker slow bus?
DeleteI think the data shows otherwise. The slow tweeker trains and buses are empty and are still polluting our environment.
Even if electric vehicles were powered by a 100% coal fired grid, they would still be better for the environment than internal combustion cars.
DeleteHere’s why:
At the size and scale of a coal fired generation station, the conversion from the potential energy stored in chemical bonds to electricity is extremely efficient. Very little of the energy released from coal power plants is lost as waste heat. And electric vehicles can convert nearly all of that electricity into motion.
But your internal combustion engine car has to have a complex system to remove excess heat and dump it into the air. Coolant has to be pumped through voids in the engine block and sent to a radiator that has an electric fan. So much of the energy in gasoline is wasted that the engine would literally melt without this cooling system.
Even when you factor in transmission losses in the electric grid, EVs powered by coal plants would still produce less CO2 than an internal combustion engine.
But no grid is 100% coal anymore. Natural gas fired plants are better than coal, and hydro, nuclear, wind and solar all play a role. So the case for EV is way better than described above.
Then there’s looking at the comparison over time. A new gas burning car purchased today will still burn 100% gas 20 years from now when it reaches end of life. But an EV purchased today relies on a grid whose supply mix is shifting away from fossil fuels and toward renewables. So an EV purchased today that relies on a grid that runs 70/30 fossil/renewable—in 20 years that same car may be running on that same grid powered by a 10/90 split (fossil / renewable).
So an EV powered by a 100% coal grid would still beat your gasser. With the actual mix today it beats your gasser by an even wider margin. And an EV purchased today will continue to become more and more efficient throughout its useful life.
3:45. Lets us not forget the constant mining of materials for these ev battery vehicles. It will run out. The mining is ruining land all over the world. All Over The World.

Deleteseems like the price of dogfood should be going down next week.
DeleteWhy 1:48...did you have your mother murdered
DeleteI don’t think licensing will help with eBikes.
ReplyDeleteThere are three problems:
1.) E-bikes move differently. Drivers develop a subconscious expectation of when and where bikes will be. E-bikes are faster than this mental map would expect. They end up physically in a different place than a driver expects.
2.) They make riding a bike easier, so more people will do it. This cuts both ways. It’s a good thing for carbon emissions and for parking and traffic. More people opting to take a bike to lunch or school means less cars making those trips. On the other hand, more people on bikes means more people traveling without the benefit of a steel cage to protect them, and presenting a smaller less noticeable visual presence. A driver is less likely to notice a bike as opposed to an SUV. More people on bikes translates to more car-bike accidents and deaths. We can work on mitigating this risk, but it will never go away.
3.) E-bikes are relatively new. They are drawing in new riders that don’t have the same skills as experienced riders. Riding a bike safely requires different skills than driving a car. The ability to anticipate what a car might do; the ability to scan windows of parked cars to predict an opening door; active listening for the sound of a car approaching from behind; the ability to scan for shadows on the ground that could be a hidden dog or kid chasing a ball—all skills that a bike rider has to develop over time. Many E-bike riders just lack the many hours needed to develop these skills.
Licensing riders won’t hurt, but I don’t see how it helps either.
Adding on now that I think about it, two more contributing factors:
DeleteE-bikes are heavy, which translates to longer braking distance.
E-bikes are faster, adding energy to any crash. Injuries are likely to be more severe.
But I’m not convinced any of this would be addressed by licensing.
DeleteLicensing comes with a test to demonstrate a basic knowledge of rules of the road. Raising awareness never hurts. You never know when someone is actually paying attention and learning something.
Whenever someone says they are “raising awareness,” I hear “doing nothing but making myself feel like I’m doing something.”
DeleteChew on this: no one cares what you hear
DeleteCongratulations.
DeleteYou have raised my awareness.
Thank you. You raised my awareness that the plane did dropped Boner pills and Phony had an enchanting weekend with Starvin
Delete8:17 additionally, cyclists primarily learn those skills on traditional bikes at slower speeds.
DeleteWhat's the difference between Starvin and a canoe?

Delete10:24- You have been voted off the blog. You are just too stupid to continue.
DeleteYou are very welcome at Encinitas Votes through, no need for intelligence there and Larri will never block you for being stupid.
Licensing is a stupid idea. My God. Your people share love your nanny state with all the rules. Did you hear Tony’s thinking about closing down the beaches and adding move fencing along our coast. Heros keep cutting the posts and cables off his first coastal fence. He said it’s not fair to fat people like him to not be able to enjoy our coast like healthy people, so it’s an equity thing. He’s talking w BIA to pitch an assembly bill on the subject.
DeleteBike licenses would take a lot of needed manpower from the police department and they currently don’t spend enough time focusing on crappy car driver behavior. Where are you gonna come up with the extra enforcement budget needed to make a difference?
Once the PD starts enforcing no straight pipe noises and no smoking laws, they will be ready to take on possibly some bike issues.
Starvin run uncensored. Get your pages straight! Lol
DeleteUnlicensed motorized vehicles on our roads should remain unlicensed? Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. Thank you for the much needed population control mother earth needs.

Yes. Licensing sucks and you only embrace it if you’re a communist fag.
11:50am What does that make you? Not even a nice deflection.
ReplyDeleteThe issue was e-bikes being licensed after too many unneeded tragedies. Sadly, there will be many more to come with such mental defectives as you exhibit by your response.
Our town does not need to wait for Sacramento to get their act together to enact licensing for e-bikes. There is a great need and it needs to happen now.
This desire for regulating e-bikes on our roadways make me a card carrying communist fag? Whew. The stench of someone in this community could be so clueless as you, is not that surprising.

ReplyDeleteThe kid blew across traffic lanes from the right, trying to access the left turning lane. Miscalculated the oncoming traffic or didn't even look and differential in speed occurred.
