RIP Fred Caldwell

Fred Caldwell, long-time proprietor of Leucadia's Caldwell's Antiques has reportedly died.

We had the pleasure of meeting Fred a few times. Always kind and funny, and ran a uniquely Leucadian store. Fred was also politically active in the "Keep Leucadia Funky" sense and was an occasional contributor/commenter to this blog.

We also remember Fred for his campaign to free his sister, pretty clearly wrongly convicted of a brutal murder in the 1990's. Fred told us that campaign was eventually successful back in 2016, but the family wanted privacy at the time, so we didn't post the news. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Caldwell family.

  2. I don’t live in Encinitas anymore, but I lived there for 20 years, and met Fred a few times. He was a good guy.

IMO, the best way to honor Fred would be for folks to get together and pressure the city to establish a Historic Preservation Commission.

Many cities have them. Owners of historic buildings, signs, and structures of any kind can apply to the commission to have an item added to a list of protected structures. Most protected assets are under a contract for a period of years. The contract assures the protected structure can’t change in appearance without additional layers of review and approval by the commission.

In exchange for accepting limits on changes to historical assets, owners can get property tax breaks, and become eligible to apply for grants to maintain or repair the protected asset. An example might be if La Paloma was protected, and the building needed a new roof, a grant might pay for some or all of the new roof.

So owners get a financial benefit for protecting parts of the community that are important to everyone.

A Historic Preservation Commission can also fund surveys to identify specific assets and districts worthy of protection to target outreach to bring assets under protective covenant.

I wish the surf cleaners neon sign had such protection years ago. That sign could have been refurbished if the owner had access to grant money.

The City of San Diego has literally thousands of assets and some whole districts under protective covenants. Encinitas has none.

I believe it would be a fitting tribute to Fred to jumpstart an effort to establish a HPC.

    1. No one cares anymore. The greedy pinheads are trying to build a huge ghetto apartment building in Historic Olivenhain. And who do you think sent out threatening letters to Encinitas if it wasn't allowed? The America Hating Leftists out of the sewer...Sacramento.
      That's right...lawsuits threatened the City.
The left doesn't care what they ruin. And no, I'm not on the right.

    3. Oh. So your strategy is to anonymously whine like a little bitch and do nothing.

      Got it.

    4. There’s nothing historic about the 7-11, sorry.

But there are other assets that should be protected, like Derby House, the house where the Eagles’ Peaceful Easy Feeling was written, the Lotus Tower, La Paloma, Pannikin (old train station), the Egyptian revival houses in the highlands, the mercantile building in Cardiff, the old school house behind Pac View, The Encinitas sign over 101, old bungalows in the Compiser district. The boat houses, the meditation gardens, the canary Island date palm on moonlight beach, and the Olivenhain meeting house (already protected on the natl register of historic places).

    5. Did It mention the 7-11? NO. Are you not aware what goodson (he is a front man for a major developer) intends to build? GHETTO APARTMENTS where two houses are now. Next to nice neighborhoods. Lock and load as part of the GHETTO PROJECT is low income. You people are clueless.

    6. You have a better location in O-hain, or do you want all of it in my neighborhood.

      re: lock and load

If you mean that, then you are a POS domestic terrorist, and belong in prison.

If you don’t mean it, then you are a weak little puss with a big mouth.

    7. 3:28, as usual you and the others are missing the point..
NOT ONE of the ghetto apartment buildings should be built. It was the America hating left that threatened to sue many towns and cities if not allowed. Gawd you people are awash in ignorance.
As for lock and load, yes, I'm dead serious. Low income ghetto apartments equals...crime. But you live in a dream world where everyone is the same.
Do yourself a favor, wake up.

  4. Apprarently Lorri won't allow the latest CN article on Morris' legal woes to be posted on EV. The article also hasn't been posted on this blog where typically both EV and EU can't wait to post Morris content. I discussed this with a lawyer friend and she said it seemed likely that this blog owner and Lorri are among the unnamed "does" in the latest Morris civil suit.

It was recently revealed that a de facto EV moderator is behind EN. Lorri claims to have known this but withheld it. She also claims she doesn't know who runs this blog but that's clearly another lie. We regularly see this blog, EV, EN and Coast News coordinating narratives. The whole state of things regarding media in this town doesn't pass the sniff test. There is obviously a small group of people controlling what we the people get to see.

    1. You need to ask yourself. What's their goal? Their goal is power by getting their candidates elected. If you think the candidates they support aren't in on it, you're sadly mistaken.

    1. The group paranoia and conspiracies from Uncensored are spilling over onto this blog.

They’re incredibly frustrated that their hero, Morris, is being sued. Also frustrated that normal people don’t care about Morris beyond seeing him held accountable for his despicable behavior.

    2. 10:44 and all you’re doing is contributing to the arguing and disrespect to Fred Caldwell.

Most all of the political attacks on here are being being made by the people who dislike Thunder, Morris and Encinitas Uncensored. Why is that?

Just chill for day and pay Fred Caldwell some respect! He was a good friend of mine.

    3. Why? Because Morris is a bully and Thunder is a traitor. Uncensored can’t even be taken seriously. Sorry Fred. πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™

  7. Fred? How about some respect for a recently departed local treasure for a change.

The morons and their morons in tow cannot resist polluting every thread, even this one as treasured as Fred was.

Legacy residents like Fred was, is, and always will be, to some of us with a longtime perspective is becoming an all too rare occurrence these days.

Geez, some people can't themselves. Showing respect for a treasured resident who showed respect for all sides should be an opportunity to bring this community together, at least for a few minutes or hours.

Alas, it is clear how far some have descended to a lower common, very common, denominator.

Is it really that hard to refrain from your typical moron crap and honor Fred for a couple of days?

It appears it is. Sad state of affairs and all for a candidate that was never suited to ever hold public office. The few well known morons in tow still persist. It is a sickness that needs a vaccine, if not for themselves, for us, a community that loved Fred for who he was and how he chose to not castigate others for their different opinions.

  9. Keep this thread about Fred. I know this may too much to ask for some blankety blanks.

You know who you are and we do too.

Enough already, you f'in morons. Fred deserves some consideration. At least for a couple of days.

Is that too much to ask? Never mind. The answer has already become obvious.

Any post that does not honor Fred, does not belong on this thread. Please?

For all the good this sentiment can do when dealing with a few malcontents that we have all come to know too well.

  10. My pleasure, 1:39. I am getting so tired of these few people who just cannot stand to say anything nice about anyone. Fred was a local who went to elementary school through high school here. His parents owned Caldwell Antiques, and when the passed, he owned it. He always kept it one story and didn't sell like he could have. I didn't always agree with him, but we could talk without having to disparage someone else. And we could compromise. He went through some hard times, but he put a smile on his face. Many of us in the community will miss him a lot. I hear there might be a memorial at Kenos, which would be a great place to have it.

  17. I passed by Freds on my way to the post office this afternoon and saw three people standing in front of Caldwells so I walked down to express my condolences.

Alas, there was one woman who looked local talking to a well heeled haha couple that reaffirmed my opinion that the vultures are circling. This couple then spoke about how good this site could be with a 4 unit on it.

I am sure this couple was not the first to stop by and have a look at what could Caldwells could be turned into for a tidy profit.

I bit my tongue and walked away before I lost my patience. Vultures fits them perfectly.

While we lose what many came here for, like the soulfulness of a once special beach community, it has become a fantasy that is history when we have profits to make off others unfortunate happenstance.

Greed is good, just not for those who knew and loved this community decades ago.

Fred was such a special part of this community for much longer than most any locals. My 50 years here pales in comparison to Fred.

  18. Some friends visited that hadn't been in town for many years. They asked what happened to Encinitas - it used to be a quiet, quaint and historic town. Now incompatible housing and condos jam every square inch, traffic is jammed, and the charm is gone. Thank the likes of Blakespear and Gonzales, who sold their souls to the BIA. The current City Council will soon vote to approve mixed development and further erosion of the style that once made Encintas special. They are allowing mass density without adequate parking allocations and overloading already severely overloaded infrastructure. There is no sensible urban planning - they've thrown it to the money mongers. The city government is inept and lining their own pockets - all stooges of the almighty buck.
