Woman arrested for starting fire in parents' condo

Encinitas Advocate:
Sheriff’s investigators have arrested a 42-year-old woman on suspicion of setting her parents’ home on fire in Encinitas on Wednesday afternoon, July 12, officials said.

Sheriff’s deputies and firefighters were called to a condominium on Via Terrassa off Via Molena around 2:45 p.m. after someone spotted smoke coming from the home. They extinguished the small blaze, which was confined to one room.

The homeowners — a couple in their 70s — were not home at the time, said sheriff’s Sgt. Anthony Portillo of the bomb-arson unit. No one was injured.

Maybe if they paid as much attention to their own sorry lives they wouldn’t have to complain about thw cost of rent and repubicants wouldn’t earn 20% less money. Maybe that is why repubicant policy has failed in every red state, they spend too much time trying to drag others down to renter status instead of working their own way up to owner status.

  5. What we need is an abortion clinic in Encinitas, downtown preferably, so it’s well recognized. It would be wonderful if the council could get behind this. I’d also like to see more BLM, LGBYQ instituted in our Encinitas Cultural Arts Department. Cultural is important to us Encinitians.

Some might not like this idea, but what if the clinic handed out free abortion pills to at risk teens. I’d support that and hopefully our council would as well.

  6. I think Encinitas already has an abortion clinic but a couple more would be great.

A designated drug use area in Encinitas would be beneficial. People shouldn’t have to hide. Pacific View would be an ideal spot to educate people on drug use and an area where they could feel safe. Portugal does it and it works.

Why not use PV effectively! It’s time for Encinitas to do its part. This city can be a shining example of how to help people who need abortions, those who want to practice drug use and not feel ashamed and we can educate as well.

  9. Republicans banning gender affirming care on minors is mostly horrific. Parents and doctors are capable of determining the best course of treatment for their child as the child ages and becomes aware and able to communicate their feelings.

But there is one aspect that’s actually good to these laws, although it’s unintended and will piss off many Republican parents. Specifically, these new laws ban the practice of “fixing” babies born with intersex characteristics. Contrary to a binary view of gender, thousands of babies each year are born with ambiguous or malformed genitals or reproductive organs. For many years now, parents and doctors quietly agreed to unnecessary surgeries on the infant to “fix” the “problem,” abs often agree to withhold the information from the child that they were born with intersex characteristics.

But these new Republican laws accidentally ban these medical procedures. The smart thing would be to end these surgeries on infants, and allow later gender affirming care when the child develops a meaningful sense of who they are. Unfortunately, the new laws postpone the care until 18, which is after the onset of puberty, leading to adverse results and mental anguish according to medical professionals.

Anyway, it’s funny that smooth brain Republican families are going to be forced to raise an intersex child who has to shower in gym class with other kids thanks to their own shortsighted stupidity.

Who knows maybe that will cause them to think twice before spouting dumb talking points about “only two genders.”

How do you feel about this?

Isn’t it a good thing that unnecessary surgeries on infants are being stopped?

Isn’t that what Republicans wanted all along? To take these decisions out of the hands of parents and doctors and postpone them until after the age of 18?

Don’t you think it would be cool to parent a 16 year old intersex kid who knows who they are, with doctors who know what to do, and yet your kid is forced to endure the humiliation and psychological damage because they can’t get care?

If you are Republican, it’s literally the policy you are voting for.

      You should be happy.

  12. That’s fine if you don’t support an abortion clinic in Encinitas and helping at risk teens get free abortion pills, but I do.

What’s wrong with helping those less fortunate, a good first step would supporting teens, helping drug users get clean needles and contraceptives and create a drug free safe zone.

I support this type of education, our Governor does as does the Biden Administration. I think Pacific View is underutilized and would be a perfect place to house these programs.

  13. I’d also support more BLM and LGBYQT integrated into our Encinitas Cultural Arts Department. We need more Black and gay pride 🏳️‍🌈 public art. This entire town is racist, always has been and we need to learn from our mistakes.

  14. Mali Drake would be a great fit for this type of programming and I’m sure the city would back her financially.

BLM, Gay Pride and abortion representation are necessary, Pacific View would be the perfect place to start this. We could lead by example. Handing out contraceptives, abortion pills and needles (so as to prevent the spread of diseases) would be a great start.

You’re a POS domestic terrorist if you don’t help those in need. Our city has taken advantage of many less fortunate people over the years, we are a racist city. It’s time to change that, and a great start would be supporting Mali Drake for City Council and heading up Pacific View.

The alleged COVID vaxes did neither, it’s why people had to get multiple jabs and continued to spread and contract.

All the jab did was weaken your immune systems ability to fight.

People had a .002 chance of dying if they contracted COVID. 90% of the people who died were obese, elderly and had severe underlying health conditions. So, if you were an average and got the vax, you were and idiot. All risk and no reward!

  26. Oh my.

    I guess I hit a nerve.

The sad thing is Republicans and Democrats used to take facts and science as a foundation, and then seek to compete with policy prescriptions that best addressed a common reality.

Somewhere along the way, the Republican Party decided that creating policy that solves problems is difficult and inconvenient. So they decided to reject reality and science wholesale and replace them with “alternative facts” (lies).

From climate to COVID to sexuality to elections to the war on books—the GOP cult has decided en masse that life is far simpler if they deny science-based reality.

    It’s a phenomenon called motivated denialism—Google it. It’s fascinating.

And yes, over a million Americans died due to COVID-19. We don’t have to take anyone’s word for it. There’s a method called “excess death analysis.” It basically plots total deaths for every month over a period of years dating back a decade or more. It establishes a very stable baseline pattern of predictable deaths that predict how many people should have died in 2020-2022 absent an exogenous event like a pandemic. When we overlay the actual count of death certificates over the expected baseline, it exposes the enormity of the COVID death toll.

    More here:

  34. Isn’t it interesting that the COVID science deniers (1) move the goal posts constantly, and (2) never cite any reputable peer reviewed data source to support their claims.

With regard to (1), I disproved the claim that the COVID death rate was faked by explaining and citing excess deaths analysis. So the anti-science crew ignored that and moved the goal posts to suggest that the vaccine for COVID isn’t effective.

With regard to (2) they again failed to Cote any reputable peer reviewed source for the new shifted goal posts claim.

This is probably because they can’t—because it’s obviously more anti-science, anti-truth, anti-reality garbage.

Here’s a link to a chart showing that the death rate for the unvaccinated was about 30 times greater than for the vaccinated during the height of the pandemic. That multiplier was even greater for the boosted.

Motivated denialism is when conspiracy theories meet confirmation bias and poor education.

    2. 5:59 did you even look at your linked graph? You’re supporting my argument.

There was 1 death in every 100,000 people who were vaccinated.

There’s and average of 2-3 deaths in every 100,000 people who didn’t get vaccinated.

So what’s your point, there’s really no difference in the number of deaths. But the side effects that have already been reported way outweigh the extra 1-2 deaths per 100,000.

But hey just keep trusting the science!

      Delete
    3. No.

I’m sorry the education system failed you.

The drop in death rate among the unvaccinated correlates inversely with the percentage of the total population receiving the vaccine.

The reduction in hospitalization and death as the vaccine was distributed and accepted widely was a consequence of the vaccine reducing the severity and duration of illness among the vaccinated. With a less severe and less lengthy infection, the probability of infecting others is greatly reduced.

Obviously this has knock on benefits to the unvaccinated as well, as the overall infection rate in the population as a whole declines.

This is common in epidemiology. No vaccine stops you from getting the illness. It works by exposing you to proteins and producing antibodies that allow for an accelerated immune response when the actual virus is encountered. But that accelerated immune response can drop the reproductive rate of the virus in a population so low that any individual is unlikely to ever be exposed. In the case of small pox, a sustained suppression of the reproductive rate can drive the virus out of existence.

Obviously, today no one needs a small pox vaccination.

      Because science works.

  44. 17th Century human life expectancy was about 35 years. Your most likely cause of death was something to do with your teeth.

Modern life expectancy is more than double that, and there’s only one cause: science.

The Age of Enlightenment or the Age of Reason gave birth to the scientific method, and modern scientific experiment design with a heavy reliance on empirical measurement and data.

If you are over 35 and breathing, you literally owe your life to science. You’d be dead without it.

Dentistry, medicines, surgical procedures, seat belts, airbags, cancer treatments, defibrillators, the autoclave, antibiotics, safety devices on power tools, our understanding of and warning systems for hurricanes, tsunamis, and tornadoes—and yes, vaccines. All based on science.

At one point, all of Christendom believed that the Earth was at the center of the solar system. They had an emotional attachment to this worldview because it reinforced their belief that humans were special and central in the eyes of their god.

When Copernicus and Galileo made telescope observations of the movements of planets and moons, they proved that the sun was at the center of the solar system.

Rather than accept scientific facts and alter their worldview, church elders convicted Galileo of heresy and imprisoned him.

The lesson here is when science establishes facts that conflict with your worldview, it’s time to reevaluate your worldview, not the facts.

Scientists are just people. They embody all the same flaws as any other human. And of course, they are fallible. Their unresearched ideas and opinions are not science.

The value of scientific research comes from rigorous design of an experiment, double blind data collection, adversarial peer review, and editorial review of all aspects of experiment design and execution prior to publication.

10:41 confuses the two by conflating the conjecture of a single fallible human with the rigor of a “published scientific study.”

If your hurdle for accepting any treatment or medical intervention is the total absence of side effects, then you are effectively arguing for a return to a life expectancy of 35.

      Delete
    2. Yes all meds have side effects, but some meds potentially have much larger side effects than worth the risk of taking.

The vax wasn’t worth the risk for the vast majority of average health people.

If you had severe underlying health conditions, such as a pulmonary disease, morbidly obese or elderly, etc it was worth the risk of taking the vax especially if you were consistently going to be in close proximity to others.

However if you were average health the chances of you dying from COVID were astronomical. You had a much higher chance of crossing the street and getting hit by a car then dying from COVID as an average health person.

The amount of healthy people taking that leap of faith in an undeveloped, experimental vaccine that was developed in just a few months when other vaxes go through rigorous testing over many years, was not worth it. Especially when you could still contract and spread COVID even after the injections.

      The risk/reward ratio wasn’t there!

    3. That’s only even partly true if you only consider your personal survival as the only valid measure of success.

Are you considering the impact on overloaded hospitals?

Are you considering the overall prevalence of the disease in the community, and how that relates to closures and mask requirements?

You may survive, but a longer and more severe infection increases the probability you will be a vector of infection to others.

      I
On a societal scale, it was the wide acceptance of the vaccine that ended public space closures and masking.

The two are inextricable. Effective and widely accepted vaccination is what ended the public health measures you don’t like.

    6. The million dead Americans doesn’t rely on doctor paperwork.

It relies on excess mortality analysis.

Given a few years of monthly data, we can understand seasonality and demographic trends and predict pretty accurately how many people should die in each month of the year.

When we compare that prediction to actual deaths during COVID, we find that in the US, there were many months when the total deaths from all sources was coming in at 115-130% of expected. And that excess morbidity over a couple of years equates to over a million dead Americans.

If you are going to claim that COVID didn’t have that big of an impact, then you are going to need to have data and science showing the cause of those million deaths.

US government-financed researchers developed AZT in 1964 as a leukemia chemotherapy. AZT is a “DNA chain terminator,” randomly destroying DNA synthesis in reproducing cells. AZT’s developer, Jerome Horwitz, theorized that the molecule might inject itself into cells and interfere with tumor replication. FDA abandoned the toxic chemotherapy compound after it proved ineffective against cancer and breathtakingly lethal in mice. Government researchers deemed it too toxic even for short regimen cancer chemotherapy. Horwitz recounted that the drug’s “extreme toxicity made it ‘so worthless’ that he ‘didn’t think it was worth patenting.” Former BusinessWeek journalist Bruce Nussbaum recounted that Horwitz “dumped it on the junk pile” and “didn’t [even] keep the notebooks.”
AZT proved to be an irresistible opportunity for Fauci. After all, Burroughs Wellcome not only had a head start in the AIDS drug program, the company also had its own army of veteran “principal investigators” (PIs) with plenty of expertise at running the complex regulatory hurdles— which Dr. Fauci had not yet mastered. Dr. Fauci needed a visible success to jump-start his program and anoint his new regime with the patina of competence. Nussbaum described how the British pharmaceutical company manipulated its leverage over Dr. Fauci to gain monopoly control over the government’s HIV response: “Wellcome’s PIs came to dominate NIAID’s clinical trial system. They formed a web linking Wellcome, the drug AZT, and the NIH. They came to sit on the institute’s key drug selection committee, and they voted on whether to give high or low priority to the testing of each anti-AIDS drug, including those that might possibly compete with AZT in the marketplace. The PIs were a power unto themselves. They were, in fact, out of control.”12

Dr. Fauci would later mimic this successful model to populate key drug and vaccine approval committees in FDA, CDC, and at the Institute of Medicine (IOM) with his Pharma PIs, giving him, and his Pharma partners, complete, vertically integrated control over the drug approval process from molecule to market.

But all did not go smoothly. Even with Burroughs Wellcome holding the reins, progress at NIAID was glacial. AZT’s horrendous toxicity hobbled researchers struggling to design study protocols that would make it appear either safe or effective. With AZT devouring his bandwidth, Dr. Fauci failed to populate clinical trials for any competing drug. After three years and hundreds of millions spent, NIAID had not produced a single new approved treatment.

    ReplyDelete
  52. It's gets exponentially worse....

    ------------------------------------------------------------

According to Nussbaum, “Tony Fauci’s managerial incompetence,” which put him utterly at the mercy of Burroughs Wellcome and its AZT and AZT-only agenda, “had exacted a staggering cost. By 1987, more than a million Americans were infected by the AIDS virus. Not a single drug treatment had come out of the government’s enormous biomedical research system.”
Nussbaum chronicles the escalating frustration among AIDS activists who were winning vast Congressional appropriations for NIAID, with nothing to show. By 1988, Nussbaum recounts, “several hundred million tax dollars had somehow disappeared into the nation’s biomedical establishment and not one new drug had been produced.” Tony Fauci’s incompetence was frustrating the national response to the pandemic. “Where was Tony Fauci at this time?” Nussbaum asks. “Nowhere. . . . He wasn’t, after all, a ‘details’ man. He was busy being a ‘hit-the-front-pages every-day’ kind of guy.”

      http://ark.cdlib.org/ark:/13030/ft1s20045x/

It appears to be a 1996 critique of the process and politics of AIDS research and treatment approvals.

If your point is that science always needs to be vigilant in exposing and limiting outside influences that may distort objective outcomes, then I agree completely.

If on the other hand your point is that all of science should be rejected because humans made mistakes in one case, then I of course think you are a fool and an idiot.

      Delete
    2. And by the way, if your goal is to discredit science generally or Anthony Fauci specifically, you couldn’t have chosen a worse example than the AIDS crisis.

When Magic Johnson went public, we all thought he’d be dead in 90 days, because that was the norm at the time. But the science evolved and adapted understanding and treatment so rapidly that AIDS went from a death sentence to a chronic manageable illness with incredible speed.

If we believe the book you quoted, science is so powerful that it achieved this success in spite of distortions and errors from political influence in the process. A logical person would conclude that science without human fallibility could have been even more successful!

      Amazing!

  53. Keep believing ...

    -------------------------------

Despite pleas from patients, their doctors, and advocates, despite the vast financial windfalls flowing to his agency from the HIV community’s adept lobbying, Dr. Fauci refused to meet with the AIDS community leadership during his first three years as America’s “AIDS Czar.” That reticence further soured Dr. Fauci’s already difficult relationships with the community he was responsible to serve.

It was a hardwired reflex at NIAID to exaggerate public fears of pandemics, and Dr. Fauci’s first instinct as national AIDS czar had been to stoke contagion terror. He made himself a villain among AIDS activists with a fear-mongering 1983 article in the Journal of the American Medical Association warning that AIDS could spread by casual contact.22 At the time, AIDS was almost exclusive to intravenous drug users and males who had sex with other males, but Dr. Fauci incorrectly warned of “the possibility that routine close contact, as within a family household, can spread the disease.” Given that “nonsexual, non-blood-borne transmission is possible,” Fauci wrote, “the scope of the syndrome may be enormous.” In his history of the AIDS crisis, And the Band Played On, author Randy Shilts reports that the world’s leading AIDS expert, Arye Rubinstein, was “astounded” at Fauci’s “stupidity” because his statement did not reflect the contemporary scientific knowledge.2 The best scientific evidence suggested the infectivity of HIV, even in intimate contact, to be so negligible as to be incapable of sustaining a general epidemic.

Nevertheless, Dr. Fauci’s reflexive response was to amplify the widespread panic of dreaded pestilence that would naturally magnify his power, elevate his profile, and expand his influence. Amplifying terror of infectious disease was already an ingrained knee-jerk institutional response at NIAID.

  57. Just keep your injecting the science into yourself. Pfizer, J&J, Moderna and our government always have the people’s best interest. Hope this is reminder to you that you may need another jab. That’ll only make 15 jabs since COVID.

    What could go wrong?

    2. 3:50 we have vaccines for polio and smallpox that actually prevent you from contracting those viruses. They work!

We don’t however have a vaccine that prevents you from spreading and contracting COVID.

The CDC even said you can still spread and contract COVID after getting vaxed.

If you’re an average person of average health with no underlying health conditions, there was no reason to inject yourself with an experimental vaccine that had virtually zero drug trials. You had a better chance of dying crossing the street in in your local neighborhood then dying of COVID.

But you just go ahead and keep injecting with science and big pharma, what could go wrong.

    3. 5:01,

      Incorrect.

The body takes a while to recognize an invading disease when encountered for the first time. The idea behind every vaccine is to expose you to specific molecular structures and proteins associated with a virus in a safe way. Your immune system eventually recognizes the proteins as an unwelcome invader and develops antibodies to destroy the invading proteins. Your immune system has a memory that allows a rapid response to subsequent encounters with the same proteins.

So no vaccine prevents you from becoming infected. They can only provide an accelerated immune response.

However, if a large majority of a population has the accelerated immune response conferred by vaccination, then the pathogen’s overall reproductive rate in the population drops below 1, and the prevalence of the pathogen shrinks. If enough people are vaccinated, a virus can become extinct entirely (i.e. small pox).

      So, no.

No vaccine can prevent you from exposure and infection, but they do lower the severity and duration of that infection. And on the scale of a whole population, vaccines can reduce the prevalence of the pathogen to levels where you are unlikely to be exposed. Polio isn’t gone, but your chances of ever being exposed in the US are vanishingly small, thanks to widespread vaccination.

  58. I think the worst part is …we all know that the CDC will contrive some more Covid type situations where they demand everyone in the controlled environments and everyone needs to get vaccines again…..

So horrible. That organization needs to either go away, or get stripped down to the beginning and rebuilt again.

So pathetic how they put Fauci in front…. That says it all.

They have zero credibility. 0, zilch, nothing, nada…

      Ahhh Yes, a conspiracy theory.

Yes, you mean a conspiracy theory we’re like the controllers of the Fed and the treasury regulators and the large commercial banks like Lehman brothers, all got exorbitantly rich, and then panned off the whole debt to the US public….

You mean like an inside job?

      Yes, a conspiracy.

    2. Lumping the COVID vax in with actual reputable vaccines is just wrong. Those other vaccines went through years of rigorous tests and clinical trials. They’re actually effective.

The COVID vax was developed in just over a month and comes with a long list of side effects and isn’t effective as you can still contract and spread the virus.

    3. mRNA vaccines were first proposed in the late 80s, and human trails began in 2001. They’ve been in constant human testing for over 20 years.

The whole reason the technology was proposed in the first place was how fast and cheap they are to formulate and manufacture.

The speedy response to a novel pandemic virus is a feature, not a bug.

  62. Yeah baby jab jab jab

Pfizer and the others are counting on you….$$$

Remember you have both annual flu and Covid shots as well and sometimes two or three Covid shots a year…..

Gotta keep those profits up…. Doesn’t matter whether or not the vaccines work or not like for the flu or Covid but they sure do you make a healthy profit for the company.

Thanks for playing. And remember it’s only your health, and your kids health. I mean really is your families health that important?

He plans to put three or four of these around Encinitas. He loves his stuff. He thinks it’s awesome. He loves control, control, control, and making situation where people live worse than he does, and is stupider than he is if that’s possible…. Sad but true.
